We're all on about the decaying river-barring double-decker viaduct in a city of 70K, I-229, I get it, but - can someone tell me: what the Cities: Skylines is this?!?!

Ah yes, the ROFI interchange: right out, f(r)ight in.

That's US-36, technically not a freeway but a divided highway, yes?

US 36 is a freeway from a little east of I-29 to I-229, and again for a bit west of I-229 into Kansas.  IMHO redoing the I-229/US 36 interchange to make US 36 stoplight-free should have been looked at as part of the I-229 downgrade studies.

The Ghostbuster

That portion of US 36 likely won't ever become part of Interstate 72, assuming 72 one day is extended that far west.

Also, since East Hills Mall (I-29/Frederick Ave/MO 6) is fast dying, this, too, is an opportunity for a wholesale rethink of the entire downtown Saint Joseph area, including I-229.

You're right about that, as I look through Historical Aerials. Still, while I am certainly no expert, it seems to me that it would have cost far less to pay for the railroad to modify the railyard a bit than to build a double decker freeway.

The point is to make it consistent in quality throughout Missouri, not to extend I-72 into Kansas where it isn't needed.

Quote from: DJStephens on January 01, 2023, 12:05:52 PMA few similarities with Syracuse here, in terms of what they're trying to accomplish.  Different structures of course - meaning viaduct vs. double decker truss structure.   Guess can understand the desire to be rid of the necessary maintenance on said double decker especially in a smallish community with little to no growth.

The I-229 viaduct is not a truss. It's just a double decker girder bridge.

I strongly oppose the removal of this highway. I'm against 99-100% of freeway removals, and if you give the New Urbanist sons of bitches a victory, they'll be even more emboldened to get important routes like Future I-42 in Tulsa removed. You give these cocksuckers an inch and they take 100 miles.

Bugo coming in with an over 18-month correction.  Thought it was generally understood after this post the structure wasn't a truss.
