Locations of State Police Barracks
« on: March 31, 2023, 10:11:18 AM »

As an aside, do the WV State Police have a post or HQ in every county?

One of the more interesting side stories about the official West Virginia State Highway Map was that the older versions from the 1960s and 1970s (ergo, pre-911) contained a listing of the West Virginia State Police "barracks" and "district headquarters".  Since the 1970s, the local offices have been called "detachments".  Upon the development of the Interstate System, the number of "detachments" were being reduced and consolidated closer to the Interstates.  But it looks like West Virginia is indeed getting closer to having a "detachment" in every county.

Troop 1 Commander (Fairmont)
     District 1 Detachments - Fairmont*/Bridgeport/Grafton*/West Union* (Marion/Harrison/Taylor/Doddridge)
     District 2 Detachments - Morgantown*/Kingwood* (Monongalia/Preston)
     District 3 Detachments - Moundsville*/Paden City (Marshall/Wetzel)(not in Tyler)
the Paden City detachment has a New Martinsville zip code (Paden City is in both Wetzel and Tyler counties)
     District 4 Detachments - Wheeling*/New Cumberland*/Wellsburg* (Ohio/Hancock/Brooke)
Troop 2 Commander (Charles Town)
     District 1 Detachments - Charles Town*/Martinsburg* (Jefferson/Berkeley)
     District 2 Detachments - Romney*/Keyser*/Berkeley Springs* (Hampshire/Mineral/Morgan)
     District 3 Detachments - Moorefield-Petersburg/Franklin* (Hardy/Pendleton)(not in Grant)
the Moorefield-Petersburg detachment is located just north of Durgon (halfway between) with a Moorefield zip code
Troop 3 Commander (Elkins)
     District 1 Detachments - Elkins*/Marlinton*/Parsons* (Randolph/Pocahontas/Tucker)
     District 2 Detachments - Philippi*/Buckhannon*/Weston* (Barbour/Upshur/Lewis)
     District 3 Detachments - Glenville*/Sutton/Webster Springs* (Gilmer/Braxton/Webster)
the Sutton detachment is located near the Flatwoods exit of I-79 and has a Sutton zip code
Troop 4 Commander (South Charleston)
     District 1 Detachments - South Charleston/Quincy (Kanawha)
the West Virginia State Police headquarters has been located in South Charleston as long as I can remember
there used to be a detachment near the Cross Lanes exit of I-64
     District 2 Detachments - Parkersburg*/Harrisburg*/St. Marys* (Wood/Ritchie/Pleasants)(not in Wirt)
     District 3 Detachments - Clay/Spencer*/Grantsville* (Clay/Roane/Calhoun)
the Clay detachment is located near the Big Otter exit of I-79 but is located near Duck and has an Ivydale zip code
     District 4 Detachments - Winfield*/Ripley*/Mason County (Putnam/Jackson/Mason)
the Mason County detachment is located in Lakin and has a West Columbia zip code
Troop 5 Commander (Logan)
     District 1 Detachments - Logan*/Williamson* (Logan/Mingo)
     District 2 Detachments - Huntington*/Wayne*
the Huntington detachment is located on East 29th Street (US-60) in East Huntington
     District 3 Detachments - Hamlin*/Madison*/Whiteville (Lincoln/Boone)
Troop 6 Commander (Beckley)
     District 1 Detachments - Beckley*/Jesse (Raleigh/Wyoming)
     District 2 Detachments - Oak Hill/Gauley Bridge/Summersville*/Richwood (Fayette/Nicholas)
     District 3 Detachments - Lewisburg*/Rainelle/Hinton*/Union* (Greenbrier/Summers/Monroe)
     District 4 Detachments - Princeton*/Welch* (Mercer/McDowell)
* located in or near the respective County Seats

So indeed, your eyes were quite perceptive.  There are 57 detachments located in 52 of the 55 counties.  The only ones not having detachments are Grant, Tyler and Wirt.
