Went up to northern Virginia yesterday and took some photos of random odds and ends up there. I've put them on Picasa; I'll transfer some to Flickr at a later date.

I haven't had a chance to caption them yet, I'll probably do that in a bit. My route was I-95 to VA 207, to VA 2, to US 1 Business (Fredericksburg), to I-95, to SR 784 (Dale City), to US 1, all the way up to the Beltway in Alexandria, then back down it and I-95 to Richmond. Weather sucked much of the day, so there's only 50 pictures at the moment.

Are those new state name shields for Interstate 95 at U.S. 301/VA-207?

I see they took down the Rest Area 1/2 mile sign from this overpass: http://picasaweb.google.com/coredesat/NorthernVA10102009#5391511468717397714

Interesting that its a new Clearview sign here, but they retained the overhead sign lighting: http://picasaweb.google.com/coredesat/NorthernVA10102009#5391511477516637922

They removed the All NON-HOV's Must Exit signage to the left with the Clearview sign replacement and removed the HOV-3 ONLY placard on the right: http://picasaweb.google.com/coredesat/NorthernVA10102009#5391511561050368082

looks like a very narrow VIRGINIA (Series C?)  If so, reminds me of some Mississippi shields for I-55 that have appeared recently.

wonder what the trend is towards tiny state names.  well, beats no state names at all!

Sort of, they were there when I was in the area in 2007. As for the font style, it does seem to be different; compare to this photo.

Indeed, that's one of the closed rest areas. There's a lot of debris on the offramp.

Yep, those have been gone for at least a year now.

that 1/95 pair is very old.  Note smaller numbers on the 95, and the classic shape on the 1.

That sign pair has definitely been there since before 1989, which was the last year I lived up there. It's funny that I can remember what signs looked like when I was 5 years old, but not a whole lot else. :p

I was in Winchester this very same weekend, just out of coincidence.  I had a little bit of free time and did a little cutout exploring.  Wish I had had more time though.
