Title: Crossroads City on main freeway exit guides
Post by: roadman65 on January 04, 2022, 12:46:27 PM
A city you see on a freeway guide in rural areas that comes up often. The city is no where near the roadway, but many roads lead to it.

Hawkinsville, GA is mentioned on many exit signs in many locations on I-75 south of Macon.
Arcadia, FL is mentioned in many places along I-75 between Bradenton and Punta Gorda.
Bishopville, SC is mentioned many places in SC on I-95 at exits between Manning and Florence.

What others you seem to a lot when traveling?

There was a big to-do, I guess 15 years ago, about Ohio & Indiana changing I-70's control city, between Columbus & Indianapolis, to Dayton, even though I-70 doesn't go through Dayton.
Other Ohio fly-bys...
I-71 - Mansfield, Ashland, Medina
I-70 - Dayton (mentioned above), Springfield, Cambridge
I-80 - Toledo, Cleveland

Los Angeles on I-40

Kewanee, IL is a control city on 3 separate exits on I-74 over the course of nearly 50 miles.

Some for Indiana:

I-64 - 3 exits for Evansville
I-65 - 2 exits for Rensselaer
I-69 - 2 exits for Muncie
I-69 - 2 exits for Huntington
I-74 - 2 exits for Rushville

Most, if not all of these cities, are also featured on mileage signs at one point along the highway. Evansville is even a secondary control city on BGSs in Illinois.

When driving I-70 to Denver, I remember seeing two signs in eastern Colorado mentioning the town of Kiowa - one just west of Limon, and then another one about 40 miles further on.

Kewanee also shows up once on I-80 (https://goo.gl/maps/VeeTqsPKo6EPeWyZ7)

Taylorville, IL:
* Once on I-55 at the IL 48/IL 127 interchange (https://goo.gl/maps/37wm2G4H79Ysf16V7), then again on I-55 at IL 29 (https://goo.gl/maps/PvxmnDoszggrvsGT8).  Theoretically it could show up a third time on I-55 at IL 104.
*Also shows up once on the freeway section of US 51 around Decatur (https://goo.gl/maps/suqToTLy9gNK5uh48)

Gibson City, IL:

* On I-74 at IL 54 (https://goo.gl/maps/suqToTLy9gNK5uh48) and again at IL 47 (https://goo.gl/maps/i8TQppEwyKvaTctk7)
* On I-57 at IL 9 (https://goo.gl/maps/i8TQppEwyKvaTctk7).  Could theoretically show up again at IL 54, but Roberts is used instead for southbound (northbound only uses one control city).

Clinton, IL could be but it is passed over for closer cities (Lincoln for IL 10 at I-55, Farmer City for IL 54 at I-74) or larger cities (Bloomington for US 51 at I-72, Decatur for US 51 at I-74).

If I-55 was built around the east side of Bloomington rather than the west, it would probably also have Gibson City as a control city for IL 9. It's used on signs at the BUS I-55 intersection. Instead, Pekin is used as the control city on I-55. Which reminds me:

Pekin, IL:

MnDOT generally doesn't "repeat" distant control cities after the initial exit for it that you come to. The best thing I can think of is Paynesville.

Heading eastbound on I-94, Paynesville is signed as the control city for MN 4 (Exit 131)
Heading westbound on I-94, Paynesville is signed as the control city for MN 23 West (Exit 164A)

Carrollton GA comes to mind. I-20 has at least three exits signed for it, but misses it to the north by several miles.

I seem to remember Xenia on I-71, however how many exits is listed I can't recall.

It most likely is memorable due to its unique spelling with the letter X is why I still remember it.

Also Washington CH I remember from I-71, but I can't recall how many ramps in 1989 were signed for it then.

How about once-upon-a-time:  Back before construction on I-40 ever started, Newton Grove, North Carolina seemed to have the most exits along I-95.  Even today, there are a bunch of these exits:

Exit 58 (I-295/US-13) Fort Bragg, Newton Grove
Exit 73 (US-421/NC-55) Dunn, Clinton, Newton Grove
Exit 79 (NC-50/NC-242) Benson, Newton Grove
Exit 90 (US-301/US-701/NC-96) Newton Grove

Add to that now the two exits along I-40, except that Newton Grove is right nearby:

Exit 341 (NC-50/NC-55) Newton Grove
Exit 343 (US-701) Clinton, Newton Grove

Of course, if you were actually looking to go to Newton Grove, the last I looked there weren't any signs along I-95 that indicated using I-40 (which is Exit 81 between two of those other, lesser important exits).

I remember that one now. Yes going to Florida we used to drive by those many exits between Smithfield and Fayetteville.

I believe Xenia is signed at Exit 50 northbound, but Exit 65 southbound.  Lebanon is signed at exit 28 northbound, but Exit 32 southbound.

I think Washington CH is only signed at exit 65 northbound but both exits 65 and 69 southbound.

Looking at a map, and seeing the triangulation, these make perfect sense.
