Title: Tulsa meet
Post by: bugo on January 09, 2010, 09:19:35 PM
There's going to be a meet on Monday, Feb 22 in Tulsa.  Activities include a bridge hunt west of town and a possible visit to the abandoned I-44 in Catoosa.

As much as I'd love to get back to Oklahoma after last summer's adventure, there'll be no way I can make it.

Why a Monday? Is the 22nd a federal holiday? We lost Presidents' Day a few years ago so after MLK Day this coming Monday (which I am going to observe by taking an county-collecting and route-clinching trip to Tennessee and adjacent environs) no more holidays until Memorial Day, unless the half-day we get for Good Friday and the four hours we get for primary election day count.

It's on a Monday because a road enthusiast from New Jersey is coming in to visit on that day.  We invited a couple others and decided to make a full blown meet out of it.

Yeah there's only one NJite who shows up at far flung events. :P

Barring highly unusual circumstances, I'll be there. I've booked the rental car.

To answer HBE's earlier question, the 15th of Feb is the Federal Holiday for President's Day.  The 22nd just just a regular Monday.

Both are just regular Mondays for me. Kentucky has swapped Presidents Day, MLK Day and Veterans Day around so much that it's hard to keep track of what's what. Used to be the state took Presidents Day and Veterans Day as holidays, then MLK Day came along. They didn't change the statute to allow an additional holiday so MLK Day took the place of Veterans Day. Then they came along and put Vets Day back in and took Presidents Day as a holiday.

And at one time the state used to observe Columbus Day too. Don't know what holiday absorbed that one...

I should be able to make it. I haven't attended a meet before, but I would like to make this one my first.

Neat!  Well, this won't be a standard meet - it's not really planned.  We're just all gonna meet up, drive somewhere, get back, and socialize.

And drink beer (after the driving part of the meet, of course.)

I think we're going to meet at my place near I-44 and Lewis Ave around 11 AM.

Has everyone decided if they're going to make it?  If you are coming, PM me for directions.

Another thing for anyone who is coming to the meet: I've seen more state troopers out in the last week than I've ever seen in Oklahoma.  Be careful.  They tend to drive black and white Chargers.

Yeah...and if you had a choice based on who to get pulled over by, you wouldn't want it to be OHP.

I will be there–I'm working a 12—9a shift that morning, so after getting off I'll probably head straight to Tulsa. Thank goodness for the turnpike speed limits.

I should be there unless it (God forbid) snows

I'll be there forbidding any unforseen weather event.

Here's a link to the NWS forecast for Tulsa:
http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Tulsa&state=OK&site=TSA&textField1=36.1277&textField2=-95.9164 (http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Tulsa&state=OK&site=TSA&textField1=36.1277&textField2=-95.9164)

Here's the forecast for Monday:
Monday: A slight chance of rain and snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 41.

But keep in mind this is Oklahoma and things can change very quickly.  We could have 80 degree weather, tornadoes, or a full blown blizzard.

Same could be said for Kentucky.

Even if there was a slight chance I could be there, it got wiped out yesterday when I had a call telling me to report for jury duty on Monday morning. Fun, fun...

This is why traveling in February is my favorite  :sombrero:

Yesterday it said clear skies all the way there and back from Laramie, now it says snow/rain almost the entire way. I'll be there regardless- if it's going to be snowing the whole way there I'll probably take my own truck though instead of a rental car, and may have to modify the route slightly, but I have plenty of time to get down there

The fact that OK's weather is so unstable that they mention snow and a high of 41 in the same forecast is amusing to me.

Last call.  If you are attending PM me for directions.  The weather is fine, a bit cloudy but no rain.  Otherwise I'll see everyone in about 2 hours.

Well, we didn't see many old, old signs, despite following tons of old US 64 in Pawnee County, but I do have something I'll be sending along for the shield gallery soon.

Nothing really "old, old", but I was a trifle surprised by all the circle/capsule signs still out there (such as OK 108)

Seems like the part of the state we visited has more than the standard amount. This was the first time in a while I've seen so many!

I found a few for OK 165 along the Muskogee Turnpike, as well. Only had time for one pic, though.  Also saw one at the airport for OK 11.

Someone needs to give us a full report! I sat in a pool of potential jurors all day only to not have my name called from the pool of 32 for the final 14.

There are several circle 11's near the airport, including one painted on the pavement.  There's also a bubble I-244 shield.

I'm guessing this sign dates to the 1960s when Keystone Lake was created:
