someone's really gotta do something about that 403.  unfortunately, I'm too lazy to write an ffox extension that differentiates between A and IMG tags and strips the referer off of A when the server returns 403.

I don't think that's the issue.  His link works just fine in IE8, unless IE has some workaround for the .htaccess entry.

I've been through this - if I exempt AARoads from .htaccess then people can hotlink. There's no separation of <a> from <img> is the problem.
