INDOT "recommissions" a highway ... sort of

The 1-mile stretch of former SR 37 between SR 62/66 at Sulphur and I-64 at Exit 86 has been "recommissioned" as an extension of SR 237 sometime in the past year.  Google recently picked up on it, in this image from last month, showing the new south terminus of 237:

Previously, 237 ended at the interstate.

I use "recommissioning" in quotes because this road has always been maintained by INDOT, even after 37 was moved onto I-64 (and later SR 64) after the section of interstate opened in 1979.  It just never had a number; it was signed at both ends with Lincoln Heritage Trail shields and "To SR 237" and "To SR 37" trailblazers, and that's it.

One wonders why they bothered to do it, given their penchant for decommissioning elsewhere.

If it has always been an INDOT road, then it makes sense to sign it.
Indiana: counties 100%, highways 100%
Illinois: counties 100%, highways 61%
Michigan: counties 100%, highways 56%
Wisconsin: counties 86%, highways 23%

INDOT doesn't seem to do "hidden"  State Routes nearly as much as IDOT does

I wasn't aware of this one. The only one I know of is the very, very short segment of Keystone Pkwy between I-465 and 96th St.

There are a few, I think. Mostly stretches of old routings that they couldn't pawn off on a city, town or county. The site hasn't been updated in years, but INDOT's facts page lists these:

* a 9.8-mile stretch of Old SR 63 (Vigo County?)
* a 6.7-mile stretch of Old US 50 (North Vernon?)
* a tiny 0.08-mile segment of Old SR 160 (where?)
* and a 0.17-mile snippet of Old US 52 (probably where it meets I-65 NW of Lebanon)

9.8 miles is the exact length of old SR 63 between SR 246 and the Terre Haute city limits. This would be the only unsigned highway I haven't driven

6.7 miles is longer than the former routings of US 50 in both North Vernon and Washington so I'm not sure what that is.

0.08 miles is the exact length of old SR 160 in Charlestown between SR 3 and old SR 403.

The 0.17 mile snippet of Old US 52 might be the Wabash River bridge. Perhaps when the road got turned back over to the county/cities, INDOT agreed to continue maintaining the bridge.

Ugh, that's Keystone AVENUE! Only north of 96th in f'n Carmel does it become the ridiculous Keystone "Parkway".

This link would indicate that INDOT still owns the bridge as of 2018, and US 52 was routed onto the Teal Rd / US 231 alignment well before that.
