Not an old sign, just a photo of (former) US-99 (now I-5) outside Fort Lewis, near Tacoma outside Seattle.

Does anyone know what the dashed area is along the ramp shoulder? I'm not thinking at any point we used French-style dashed shoulder lines...right?

Where are the I-71s? I have found a few 75s, but not a 71.

There are a bunch of city-installed I-75 (and I-71) signs on various streets in Cincinnati, both fairly new and very faded.

any others with the state name?

There are no I-71 Ohio shields left. Outside of the I-75's in Lockland, there is just the one for I-70 in Columbus.

The I-70 shield is no more

162 pictures from the mid/late 1960s mostly involving the DC Beltway are now available in a new gallery at the Virginia Highways Project:

http://www.vahighways.com/495vintage/index.htm

A couple examples of what you can find in this gallery, which is organized geographically so that you can "virtually drive" the beltway from its early beginnings.  Mostly Virginia but some Maryland.

^ Dixie Highway just north of Covington Catholic High just before the curve heading toward the bend above I-71/75?  Just drove by there 2.5 hours ago.  I see this was before US 127 got extended to Chattanooga.  Built up a bit since then.  Also, I see Covington had about 20,000 more people in the city back then.  What year was this -- around late 1940's-early 1950's?

I like how Maryland underlined the cardinal directions on their BGS's (they may have been black back then) ala Michigan.  Looking at the Washington Beltway photos was very interesting.  They should have kept some of the mileage signs around that were posted back then (especially distances to Richmond and Annapolis).

From Tumblr, about a week ago.

I'm going to guess this photo is from 1978-1980, based on the car's wear-and-tear (it's a Fiat 850 spyder, last made in 1973) and the plate's sticker.

This showed up on Facebook a couple days ago.

And this just sold on e-bay

There needs to be a caption contest for this photo.

Recently found this photo gallery containing old shots of the Pulaski Skyway on NJ.com. Included are some shots of the signage that used to be on the roadway:

Life would be boring if we didn't take an offramp every once in a while

About a year ago a gentleman e-mailed me some vintage black and white road photos from NC and VA.  I've posted them on the blog:

http://surewhynotnow.blogspot.com/2015/05/local-sign-find-vintage-nc-and-va-road.html

The five photos include what may have been a locally installed US 421 Truck Route shield that was a cutout circle, interesting span wire hung overheads for US 29 and 70 in Greensboro, a look at I-40 and asheboro street before it was signed I-40.  Button copy US 29 cutout in concord and one from US 1/58 in South Hill, VA.

Found some good stuff on the Georgetown County Library Digital Collections...they contain the best looking examples of how SC posted their state routes in the 1920s-30s:

This is ca. 1960 of SC 41 at US 521 in Andrews.  The route shields shown here were still there in the late 1980s...

This is 1933-34 pic of SC 51 at SC 512.  Today it is S-22-4 at S-22-6.

This is 1933-34 pic of SC 511 and SC 512.  This is now the SC 512 and SC 513 intersection.

Not on the internet, but I have taken a photo of a photo I found while randomly walking around at school.

From University of Manitoba. Not mine.

1969: Hwy 75 southbound in Winnipeg. Signs are pretty different now (thanks to bilingualism, but I won't go there  :banghead:) Same streetlights it looks like too:

This should work from a webarchive page of Matt Steffora's old roadhouse in the 1990s.  Overheads in Petersburg, VA along 95 south approaching I-85.  Sequential-Richmond Petersburg Turnpike numbering.

And on 95 North at 64 East old Exit 11

Both photos from 1988.

Westbound on US 60 just outside Winchester, Ky. This sucker dates back to the early 1970s, if not older. The non-reflectivity gives it away.

Government would be tolerable if not for politicians and bureaucrats.

And I'll throw this one on this thread too, although I also put it in the "reused, recycled..." thread. This is located near that "Stop Ahead" sign above. It dates back to the early 1970s, if not earlier, because of the lack of reflective sheeting. Photo taken two weeks ago.

I saw this one on a New York City/tri-state Facebook forum earlier. It's got to be from the Buffalo area. The poster said it was around 1977.

Yeah, that was a pretty legendary blizzard.  Affected a lot of the Midwest as well.

Found a copy of this photograph on Tumblr today. Originally photographed by Stephen Shore in Amarillo, TX in August 1973. Featuring a '61 spec US 66 shield!

Talk about classic!  Classic US shields, classic sign logos (Denny's and my favorite, Holiday Inn), classic autos (especially the Buick in the right lane), old-style streetlights, and gas pumps not underneath a large roof.  Probably an attendant pumped it for the folks of Amarillo.   Hey, 30.9 cents/gallon!

Also, no Interstate 27.  :D
