Krispy Kreme didn't have much luck moving in to the shadow of Starbucks.  The Burlington location became a bank, but the Puyallup South Hill location became a Panera Bread.  Hey, I didn't ask for something more healthy!  The interior walls are still up, but the huge donut maker area is now more seating.

And there are so many Starbucks locations at former Burger Kings, still using the rounded square sign outline.

Lots of really cool examples posted so far, thanks everyone. I appreciate that the focus has been on chain to chain conversions; I recognize that restaurants closing and becoming other restaurants is very common, but wasn't sure how common it was for chains to take over other chains. Turns out, not that uncommon!

I feel that Friendly's can move this thread by itself with minimal effort. Talk about a company that has taken the Sears/KMart scenic route to its own obliteration.

That certainly seems to be the case, I've never heard of Friendly's but they seem to have closed a lot of locations over the years. Makes sense how some may get turned into another chain.

Ha, I grew up in the South Hill area and knew people who worked at that Krispy Kreme. Even I forgot about that example!

Regarding the Starbucks, there is also another BK to Starbucks conversion in Spanaway; I actually found out about it from one of those highway videos (this one specifically) where I spotted a BK that I did not remember being there. It has the tell-tale rounded square sign. The Taco Del Mar has long closed, not sure why it remains on the sign.

...Of course Marriot sold Roy Rogers except on the NJ and PA Turnpikes ( because those were making money) and the new owner cut back on its markets.  I believe NJ still has a couple of stores left...

There hasn't been a stand-alone Roy Rogers in NJ since the 1990s.

Maybe in your area, but my uncle in Pine Beach, took me to the one on Route 9 in 2005.  In fact 2022 imagery still shows that store still standing.

They seem to be active more in PA on the PA Turnpike and in  MD for free standing.

Their webpage shows only two locations in NJ left. Both are in Ocean County, which is on the other side of the state from you.

Interesting turn of events, too. I see the BK had been there a while, then it was remodeled around 2012-2013.

The Carl's Jr is odd, I see all of the Ontario locations have since closed, which explains the short stint. Still odd they had to move into a former BK location, any idea if it closed substantially before the Carl's Jr opened? I don't see any BK locations that could have replaced that location, so I'd guess Carl's Jr bought it.

I've sometimes seen fast food locations in strip malls open standalone locations, but I see that's not what happened here.

There's a couple of Denny's near me that changed. One to a Grand Azteca (5-site chain) and another to a local 2-site mom and pop general restaurant.

There was a hamburger place, I forget what chain, that turned into a Del Taco, maybe 15-20 years ago.

Chester, Virginia, all around the intersection of US 1/301 and VA 10:

-Friendly’s became Zaxby’s
-Hardee’s became Chicken Fiesta (local chain)
-Waffle House became Chipotle

Additionally, a former BB&T SunTrust before the Truist merger became Little Caesar’s, and a few chain-to-local and local-to-local that don’t fit this thread.

Carl's Jr expanded into Ontario with 4 locations and they all failed miserably, hence the short time it was there (it remains in Canada only out west).

I have no idea about the BK before that though.

One strange one that I know of is where a KFC in Angleton, TX turned into a ... TitleMax Loans?

Not to mention, next door, an old Wendy's turned into an independent Mexican restaurant, while next door to that, a restaurant (El Patio) moved to a new location downtown, and another Mexican restaurant (El Jimador) moved into that old building from a strip mall.

To make things even more complicated, there used to be another Mexican restaurant across the street (La Casona) which moved to a brand new building on the outskirts of town, but another Mexican restaurant recently was just started up in that old building. Overall, over the past 8 years or so, 5 different Mexican restaurants have been located on this tiny stretch of road, and all five are still in business in some capacity.

I drove past another former Waffle House today, this one at NC-55//NC-54 Exit 278 in Durham.  This was a very busy location, but was a crime haven the entire time that I've lived here.  It is now houses a Jimmy's Hot Dogs (a local chain owned by the one of the co-owners of the former Spartacus restaurant).  In the same vein, the Jimmy's Hot Dogs on Guess Road in Durham was formerly a J&J Fish.  All of which reminds me, the original Pizza Hut in Hillsborough was originally converted to a Jimmy's Hot Dogs (which was quite popular, but got booted when the owners of Daniel Boone Village sold the former amusement park section to a developer, requiring the relocation of Pueblo Viejo Mexican Restaurant - which doesn't qualify since it is not part of a chain).

Shoneys in Neosho, MO became a Dennys. Shoneys in Lake Buena Vista, FL is now a Mr. & Mrs. Crab.

Unless something has changed, the Denny's at I-4 and US 27 was a Shoney's in another life.  The same for the Denny's at the Sun City exit on I-75.

A few other examples:

Ruby Sunshine on US 280 here in Birmingham was a IHOP.
Dreamland BBQ also on US 280 was once a Chili's.
IHOP at I-75 and Fowler Avenue in Tampa also was a Shoney's
Wendy's in Bay Minette, AL was once a Ruby Tuesday
TGI Friday's in Birmingham became Perry's Steakhouse

Most location of The Juicy Seafood that I have seen were once a location of a different chain.
