Title: I-490/I-390/NY 390/NY 31 interchange
Post by: webny99 on October 10, 2017, 09:24:28 PM
Does anyone know what's going on here?

I thought I remembered that some new ramps to NY-31 were going to be built, but I couldn't find any online plans.

No idea, I actually went through there the other day and didn't see any work being done.

If I remember correctly - and the NYS DOT site I think is where I got this from - they are building a direct ramp from NY 390 NB to NY 31, by building an overpass over the I-490 WB ramp to NY 390 NB.  That ramp will end aligned with the NY 31/Lee Rd intersection.  The I-490 WB ramp to NY 31 will branch off before the new overpass to merge with the new ramp from the right.  This will eliminate the current I-490 WB/NY 390 NB/NY 31 weave.  They are also reconstructing and I believe widening and lengthening the NY 31 bridge over NY 390.

I don't remember what else is occurring, but I think there will be more modifications to NY 390 SB.

The project also includes replacement of the NY 390 bridges over Trolley Boulevard.  The bridge replacements are what's being done now.

All I know is that NYSDOT has and will be pumping money into that interchange for years.

Interesting; I went through a couple of months ago and definitely noticed some work clearing for the new NY 31 ramp.

Should all be part of the same project, though I believe it's being done in phases.  Check the environmental impact statement.  Sometimes information is left off the website with the idea that the public will look it up.

I was just driving through here the other day, and piers are now in place for the new ramp which will go directly from 390 North to Lyell Ave. The bridge replacement(s) are also nearing completion.

Here (https://www.dot.ny.gov/content/delivery/region4/projects/439013-Home/439013-Repository/439013_PrefAltA2dwg.pdf) is the full plan for this interchange. Phase 1 (the bridges) will be complete this spring. There's no schedule available for Phases 2-4, but based on my observation, Phase 2 (390 Northbound) seems to be well underway.

From the Lyell Ave bridge, looking south: Existing (https://www.dot.ny.gov/portal/page/portal/content/delivery/region4/projects/439013-Home/439013-Repository/390-490%20PHOTOSIMS%20VP1%201.jpg) vs. Proposed (https://www.dot.ny.gov/portal/page/portal/content/delivery/region4/projects/439013-Home/439013-Repository/390-490%20PHOTOSIMS%20VP1%202.jpg)
Note the new southbound roadway, and the additional northbound lanes.

I passed through the project area Friday afternoon and took the opportunity to at least attempt some photos while behind the wheel:

New Install on the ramp from I-490 WB to NY 390 NB. I'm generally against posting distances in feet, yet it seems right here.

Second new install - the bridge behind it, which will carry the ramp from NY 390 NB to NY 31, is also new.

This ramp will have two thru lanes when complete. Note the ramp to Lyell Ave. curving off to the right.

Note the extensive clearing on the right. NY 390 NB will have five lanes here (and four to Lexington Ave.) when complete.

New Lyell Ave. (NY 31) Bridge nearing completion.

No more than I'd link to your forum post to embed your avatar.  Does your browser have a "copy image address" feature like Chrome does in the right click menu?  You'll know you have it when you get something ending in ".jpg".

Your best bet for posting Imgur pictures on this forum is to click on your image once you've uploaded it, and copy the "BBCode" entry on the right side.

The new NY 31 (Lyell Ave) bridge over I-390 is now complete - seven lanes instead of the former five.

NY 390 SB is reduced to two lanes between Exit 22 (Lexington) and Exit 21 (Lyell) while they build the auxiliary lane between the two exits. NY 390 NB is to have a lane reduced starting this Friday. That ought to work wonders for the already tedious afternoon congestion!

The two changes I'm anticipating most eagerly are the opening of the new NB ramps to Lyell Ave, and the realignment of the northbound lanes to provide three lanes approaching I-490 WB (the current bottleneck is a rush hour nightmare, while the exit only lane to I-490 eastbound goes basically unused; it will be converted to a thru lane). I'd like to know how to find estimated completion dates for the above, if possible.

BREAKING: The new ramp(s) to Lyell Ave opened this week! I clinched both approaches today, and I hope to get some photos next time I'm out that way.

There's still construction going on near both approaches to the ramp. I'm eagerly anticipating the new signage (ironically, the existing signs are still new), and implementation of the high-speed fork on I-490 West. Lyell Ave itself is a work in progress, but getting rid of the traffic signal at the old off-ramp has helped traffic flow tremendously.

Truck traffic on that part of Lee Road has already spiked: trucks no longer have that nasty double-turn to contend with, they can go straight from the freeway onto Lee Road.

I drove through the ROC area Saturday and into Greece from I-490, there was a ton of work going on. I have never driven on this NY 390 highway until now, so I don't know what it looked like before. However, they were putting up sound barriers and doing major roadwork. What's happening?

Quite a lot is - and will be - happening, as has been mentioned upthread. Most of the construction work you would have seen is part of Phase 2, which involves:
(1) New NB and WB off-ramps to Lyell Ave (complete)
(2) New on-ramp from Lyell Ave to NY 390 NB (in progress)
(3) Widening NY 390 in both directions from Lyell to Lexington (in progress)
(4) Reconfiguring of the northbound lanes approaching I-490 - current exit only lane becomes a thru lane and vice versa (in progress)

See my post below, in particular the link to the full plan:

This project is progressing quite nicely. Substantial work has been done on the new southbound roadway, some of which is even visible in Street View (https://www.google.com/maps/@43.1563772,-77.6789769,3a,75y,257.46h,83.37t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sqFgYvTXMpjoPvPLygLvLiw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192!5m1!1e1). A lot of clearing work has also been done to make way for new sound walls, mostly on the western half of the interchange. This has really changed the character of I-490 west of the interchange: compare this (https://www.google.com/maps/@43.1582567,-77.6843599,3a,75y,264.04h,89.18t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sEKAWI9EntMNVG0EKm9pA1g!2e0!5s20190701T000000!7i16384!8i8192!5m1!1e1) to this (https://www.google.com/maps/@43.1582858,-77.6841178,3a,75y,282.21h,90.21t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sHdMB74ugmSPSbXQhe2b3Vw!2e0!5s20201101T000000!7i16384!8i8192!5m1!1e1) (and it's different again now with the sound walls installed).

Yeah, I wish the use of control cities would spread to the I-490/I-590/NY 590 junction, particularly on I-490 where there are no control cities for 590.

Rochester/Buffalo/Airport/Greece were in use on the previous signs at this junction, but I'm not sure about before that.

I must have been mixing it up with the Can of Worms, which has little in the way of control cities. The same with some of the signs for the 590/104 interchange.

A little late, but just for the record, this project is officially complete! It seems to be functioning really well, especially on NY 390 southbound where AM congestion now markedly better than NY 590 southbound, which wasn't the case before. And the interchange as a whole is essentially future-proofed now, I can't imagine any more improvements being needed for a long time, except maybe 8 lanes on I-490 from I-390 to NY 531, but that's pretty trivial in the big picture.
