Geez, is EVERYONE glued to their phones nowadays!?

I'm not. I have a Tracfone in my car that stays in my car. I only use it for road trips to make phone calls back home and if I ever broke down I could also call roadside assistance. It's not uncommon for me to go several days without checking my cell phone.

No.  My phone just does voice and text, so there's no temptation to be glued to it for social media.  However, reception is good in marginal areas, so it's more likely to be useful if there's an incident while I'm out in the wilderness hiking.

Well, it looks like they're resting at the moment, so it's make sense for them to be on their phones. Especially since they wouldn't be doing anything else.

A month ago, my family and I were at the beach, and I swear at least half of the people were on their phones. It's really sad when you see a family or group of friends and instead of talking to each other, their all looking at their phones

lol. Two people surfing the web. In Atlantic City NJ, nobody was ever surfing the web. How things change in just one year.

I loathe the "perpetually staring at phone"  culture as much as anyone else (and have complained to that effect in other posts on this forum), but I do have to say one thing in defense of the smartphone. Using one's phone is not an activity in and of itself. You merely use the phone as a gateway to engage in other activities.

The beach-going phone gazer might be reading a novel–a time-honored seaside pastime–albeit in e-book form. Sure, she might not be reading Jane Eyre and could be wasting time on some horrid clickbait tripe (10 Shocking Things You Didn't Know about Taylor Swift–#6 Will Make You Cry), but should could also be finding a restaurant for dinner that evening.

In other settings, a teenager of a few decades ago may have alternated between a paperback book, a radio, a magazine, a handheld game, an Instamatic camera, and a TV set. Today, all of those items could be replaced by one smartphone, and parents will wring their hands and whine about today's kids "always being glued to a phone" . True, it would be impolite for them to be on their phones at a family meal and dangerous to use them while driving a car or walking down the street. But the mere fact that someone's using a smartphone throughout the day is not a sign of cultural decay in itself. How its being used and how it fits into the person's life and their interactions with others is more important.

Egads.  NSFW.

Agreed, this should have been marked as 'NSFW'.  I do have to remind EVERYBODY HERE, we do have some users under 18.  I've added the text to the original post.

Not to mention users that may be using this forum on work computers, in public settings, etc...

Luckily no one was around when I opened this on my work computer :-D

I found this article that made me think of this thread.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/2016/04/29/google-street-view-car-catches-itself-breaking-speed-limit/

QuoteGoogle Street View car has captured itself speeding while driving down a quiet residential street in Glasgow.

The car appears to exceed the 30mph speed limit on St George's Road to the west of the city thanks to its own photograph of a speedometer reading 37mph shortly before it enters a 20mph zone.

QuoteIn August 2013 Police Scotland were called after someone spotted what appeared to be a murder on Edinburgh's Giles Street captured by Google Street View, complete with an  image of a man holding a pick axe handle standing over an apparently lifeless body.

Upon investigation they found mechanics Dan Thompson and Gary Kerr had staged the grisly scene after recognising the Google car all the way back in August 2012.

Admin note: NSFW!!

This should not be a big deal.

Not really, but it's still not appropriate here I would think. After all, we're here to talk about roads, not nudity (very easy to find that elsewhere). Not to play the role or anything but...

I don't think so. Then again, as a European I find the censorship of certain parts Americans do unnecessary, as I believe nudity doesn't necessarily mean pornography (I define the latter as the content that depicts sexual acts). In fact a few years ago we had a TV show were two naked subjects met in a beach. The show was a hit not because of nudity, but because of the ridiculous things they said.

I posted this picture in the Roundabouts thread and jeffandnicole and kphoger pointed out that the one car is going the wrong way :wow: This roundabout is in Toledo, OH (Cherry St and W Manhattan Blvd):

An even better view, it doesn't look too good.

But it looks like the car stopped before causing an accident!

I think it's a cultural difference.  Americans tend to associate nudity exclusively with sex.

It's absolutely a cultural difference.

Here's some insight from a driver.  In common click-bait parlance, Number 4 is really interesting.  Number 4 and, to some extent, Number 3, are the only ones that are half-way on-topic, but I find Number 4 so interesting that I think it warrants mention on the forum.

According to the article, which areas are covered is up to the driver, who has to meet a quota.  They may choose a long straight drive, or may fill in the required data capture with minor streets and parking lots.

I swear this is not an indoor, yet it is marked as such (orange circle). In Rivas Vaciamadrid, a suburb of (you guessed it) Madrid ES, there are four of them in the area.
