Title: My Arizona Roadgeek Website (AzNate's Roads Updates)
Post by: AzNate on July 24, 2022, 04:49:32 AM
Hello! I launched a roadgeek website a year ago, mostly related to roads in Arizona, but also featuring stuff from neighboring states occassionally. I was mostly inspired by the Arizona Roads website when I first came up with the idea of this, so my website provides a bunch of more up-to-date information regarding highways in Arizona as well as a series of pages dedicated to showcasing errors or other fails on signage. There is a special pages section on the site that I use for documenting button copy signs that I find throughout the country, as well as various roadgeek topic pages such as info about Arizona welcome signs, Arizona traffic signals, my license plate collection, a license plate generator, and images of progress on the Broadway Curve Project on I-10! I also have an image gallery to show off some of my pictures from places in Arizona and other surrounding states that I have visited.

If anyone is interested in seeing such a site, you can check it out here: roads.aznate.tech (http://roads.aznate.tech)

Noticed that Arizona Roads was listed as an inspiration, that's what I used to read when I lived in the state also.  Good to see another directory site has emerged for Arizona.

Thanks for the kind words. I think I will also use this thread as an update log, so here are the big changes I made last night:

- Added a proper contact form
- Updated info on the welcome signs page about why US 191 has no welcome sign.
- Finally added Arizona gallery pages for AZ 264, AZ 277, AZ 377, US 64, US 160, and US 191.
- Added Utah gallery pages for US 191, UT 162, and UT 313.
- Added Colorado gallery pages for CO 41 and US 160.
- Added New Mexico gallery pages for I-25, I-40, NM 333, NM 466, US 64, US 64 Business, US 160, US 491, and US 550.
- Added random roads gallery pictures for Albuquerque, Farmington, and Santa Fe, NM.

Here are the latest major site updates since the last post I made:

  • Updated info to reflect the SR 24 extension fully opening today, as well as added pictures of the new stretch of highway
  • Added a picture of probably the last remaining inverted Loop 303 shields in the wild
  • Added new pictures to the Loop 303 slideshow
  • Updated info and imagery of the Arizona welcome signs on US 70, US 180, SR 264, SR 93X, and SR 95
The original Arizona Roads is one of my favorite roadgeek sites, so I like that it inspired you to do this one. Great work!

I don't think I've ever seen someone do a roadgeek image site by putting pins on a map before. And even uses OSM as the base map, so there's less risk of the API breaking at some point over the years. That's super cool. Well done.

Whoops, power went out today right after I left for a SE Arizona trip, so the website will be down until Saturday afternoon probably since I can't do anything about it until I get back. After that's fixed, expect a bunch of new pictures of southeastern Arizona highways.

The website is back online, along with the southeastern AZ road trip additions + some other updates to the website tonight:

  • Added pictures of Interstate 19 (https://roads.aznate.tech/highways/i19), State Route 80 (https://roads.aznate.tech/highways/az80), SR 82 (https://roads.aznate.tech/highways/az82), SR 83 (https://roads.aznate.tech/highways/az83), SR 87 (https://roads.aznate.tech/highways/az87), SR 90 (https://roads.aznate.tech/highways/az90), SR 92 (https://roads.aznate.tech/highways/az92), SR 387 (https://roads.aznate.tech/highways/az387), and US 191 Business (https://roads.aznate.tech/highways/us191) (and of course gallery pages (https://roads.aznate.tech/gallery/highways/arizona) for 80, 82, 83, 90, and 92)
  • Made a bunch of new additions to the Goofs & Fails Map (https://roads.aznate.tech/goofs-fails)
  • Added a picture of the Arizona Welcome Signs (https://roads.aznate.tech/special/welcome-signs) on SR 80 coming from New Mexico and Mexico (kind of)
  • Added a picture for the Patagonia-Sonoita Scenic Highway on the scenic roads (https://roads.aznate.tech/special/scenic-roads) page
  • Updated info about SR 187 (https://roads.aznate.tech/highways/az187) being the shortest state highway in AZ since SR 24 (https://roads.aznate.tech/highways/az24) was extended to 6 miles
  • Added a picture of Douglas traffic signals to the Arizona Traffic Signals (https://roads.aznate.tech/special/traffic-signals) page
  • Added collapsible sections for each year on the What's New (https://roads.aznate.tech/new) page

I'm a big fan of the map format for the goofs/fails page, and I'm really enjoying your work. Is there any way to make the map not zoom in when you click on one of the points, though?
Title: Re: My Arizona Roadgeek Website (AzNate's Roads Updates)
Post by: AzNate on March 24, 2023, 10:16:19 PM
No, there isn't a way to toggle the zoom-in for the map points. I tested adding that with the idea that it would make it easier to see the exact location of the point, but I think it makes the experience more annoying than I intended. I've been thinking about removing the auto zoom-in for a bit and I'll probably go ahead with that now, thanks for the feedback!

I do remember US 66 shields in 2000 in many cities it served. However, am glad US 80 isn't forgotten nor is parts of US 99 in CA as some brown historic shields in the Imperial Valley where it once ran.

Interesting that there's a Historic US 80 sign, but not one for US 89.  There's also a sign for Historic US 60/70/80/89 in front of the decayed shell of the old Buckhorn Baths complex at Main St. and Recker Rd. in Mesa.

I just discovered your site. I noticed the overhead signs on I-19 and I-10 were replaced as well; it's been within the past six weeks. There's a few other new panels along I-19 south of Green Valley, replacing the button copy signs with new versions and maintaining the metric units. I think the advance southbound panel for Tumacacori-Carmen is one of the new panels I noticed yesterday.

Sad to see old button copy signs get replaced, but it's nice that they're keeping metric.

Nice that AZ recognizes former US 80.

Speaking of former US 80, coincidentally I drove down a bit of it on Saturday to the Gillespie Dam Bridge and got some pictures that are now up on my website.

Also, I got some more Broadway Curve (https://roads.aznate.tech/special/broadway-curve/) pictures, 2 new Goofs & Fails (https://roads.aznate.tech/goofs-fails/) pictures, and I updated some inaccurate SR 76 (https://roads.aznate.tech/highways/az76/) info today.

Noticed your goofs and fails section, in area around Safford.

Background on advance "TO East I-10" signage: Was installed in 2017 after I-10 traffic was diverted probably a dozen times to US 70 due to problematic orchard dust near San Simon on I-10.

It's not a goof; in this application, advance guide signage is appropriate. No need for 40,000 I-10 bound trucks to end up in the mine because they happened to see other trucks (or mine commuters) making the turn to 191 North.

https://goo.gl/maps/U7azRVaphMM2kehf6
Notice the reassurance marker for US 70 is located after the intersection, as it should be.

I do agree, the signage for I-10 is appropriate, my point was that it felt like US 70 should've been signed together with the I-10 and US 191 directional signage. Looking at it now and at the history of the intersection signage, I think this shouldn't be on the goofs & fails map, so I'll remove it, thanks for letting me know about it.

I see what you're saying. The TO I-10 marker should really have a US 70 shield mounted on the same post in advance of the intersection. I think mostly got hung up on the "reassurance"  verbiage when i wrote my original reply.

That's awesome that you're sort of picking up where Alan left off. Your site has a ton of cool features that weren't available, or at least weren't  easy to execute, back when his was active.
