Quote from: SignBridge on August 18, 2024, 10:44:00 PMSurprised they were able to do that even in the 1950's when Eminent Domain ruled. In that era maybe New Jerseyans were really desperate for new highways to relieve the congestion from the explosive post WW II growth, so maybe even moving a cemetery wasn't out of the question at that time.

It was very much an "of its time" move that would be extremely difficult to do again today. In fact, if they could, pretty sure the Turnpike Authority already would have widened the road in this area to help with the congestion that happens in both directions, but they can't expand here.

What's the real rationale behind severing Broadway at Times Square, Herald Square, and Worth Square? Oh yes Union Square also. Only north of Columbus Circle and south of Union Square the street is a long distance arterial.

I can see Times Square to make it more tourist friendly ( as it was the first to be converted) as a walking mall is perfect for that, but the other three squares aren't that tourist oriented.

Then the road diet they gave it here https://maps.app.goo.gl/53JhMg2jdCow1Pu86

I can see with the severing of Herald Square behind the image not much traffic is using it anymore, but still the city has gone all out to make  auto travel more Undoable in addition to that congestion pricing.
Every day is a winding road, you just got to get used to it.

Manhattan's better off for the walkable streets.  Should visit sometime.

They're doing it for locals, not for tourists.

Eh, works for tourists as well.

Looks like the road work at the NE Thruway/I-95, Pelham Pkwy and the Hutch is mostly complete.  Has it helped with traffic at all?

I thought the purpose was to extend the 4th NB lane to Exit 9 for the Hutch??
It looks like it still drops off and the exit 8 on-ramp turns into an aux lane for the Hutch. I noticed most cars get off for the Hutch.
I only take pics of good looking signs. Long live non-reflective button copy!

I hope so. That whole stretch going NB is nasty.

It has to do with roads. And I actually agree with that. I don't care if you're democrat or republican. If you're anti-Car, I'm against you.

D-Dey65

The Panda is right, Rothman. Ed Koch (D) was originally against the reconstruction of the West Side Highway as a limited-access highway, then he changed his mind.

Rothman

Being anti-car and being "road hazards" are different.  NYC has successfully closed down roads to vehicular traffic, over the exaggerated fears of those opposed.

I don't think the divide is partisan, given the number of varied communities in NY that want some form of road diets for their main thoroughfares no matter their dominant political affiliations.

So, that op-ed, from three years ago, predicting an apocalypse that hasn't happened, is nothing but partisan schlock.

Could you show me any Republicans who are advocating things like this? Because I'm willing to accept the fact that there are Democrats who aren't.

Looks like NYCDOT raised the speed limit on the Grand Central Parkway through the Kew Gardens interchange: https://maps.app.goo.gl/tTPKzG33AkU3QxL69

Even after the rebuild construction was done, the old 40 mph zone persisted for about two years.
Not every speed limit in NY needs to be 30

roadman65

When are they going to raise the speed limit on the FDR?  40 mph is way too slow.

That is if volume lets you get past 15 mph.

Your kidding right.

I'm not going to play your games, but FYI the FDR is always congested. You see, down in the city ( unlike Upstate where you're from) there are many more automobiles. So it's natural for a road to get heavy volume even during non peak travel times. So it's quite common traffic along the FDR Drive moved at 10-15 mph.  Plus the city posts the road at 40 mph rather than the usual 50 that most limited access highways have in the five boroughs. :bigass:  :poke:

If traffic never hits 40 mph, then there's no reason to raise it.

FDR is also a notoriously unsafe highway, so suggesting to raise the speed limit does warrant a "Wut."

I say again, sir: Wut.

New topic. I was looking at the Cross Island/Grand Central Parkway interchange in Alley Pond Park in Queens, and I noticed the closed entrance to Alley Pond Park on the westbound collective-distribution road.

I assume this is to prevent weaving between those who want to enter the park from the parkway, and those who are just leaving the Cross Island Parkway.
