Whenever I get started at a new forum the first thing I generally do is read the rules so I can be educated as to the particularities of the site (what is and isn't acceptable can vary a lot form place to place).

...and so I can't help but notice that this forum seems to be rather lacking of a published set of rules.

Might wanna do something about that. We don't want anarchy reigning, do we?
If you always take the same road, you will never see anything new.

Chris

Yeah, I think it would be a smart move. This way you can ban/warn users by referring to the rules. Otherwise they can say "what rules? There are no rules here!" or something like that.

the only one I've managed to discern so far is "stay on topic in the thread"

I'm sure posting goat porn would not go over well either; but if I'm drunk, I may try it!

Wow, Duke registered. I was thinking that there should be rules, but it isn't my site.

I'm not going to make a list of hard set rules like other forums do, but more like guidelines to follow. I think that it makes everything more comfortable when you don't have a bunch of exact rules to follow, but there will be guidelines that can be construed as rules.

I'll have them up soon.

Next time, when you get the notice that the thread is more than 120 days old, take a serious look at the thread and determine if your post on a thread 8 years old is relevant.

Well, that was an interesting bit of nostalgia.  The forum was only open for three days when this thread was started!

When my wife and I had our first baby, we moved to Wichita because that's where my parents were.  We lived in their basement for the first year and half, till we got our own place.  During that time, I parked down at the foot of the driveway.  One day my dad backed out to go to work, misjudged the steering, and hit the front corner of our car.  Even though we were separate families filing separate taxes and everything, the insurance company considered it to be no different than if he had hit my mom's car and refused to pay any damages.  My dad had to pay for the body work out of pocket.  (Then he told me to start parking on the street.)

I would have been in the same boat. But, my son's car was a beater with dents and scratches everywhere, what was another dent in the passenger door, lol.

That rear bumper on my Grand Marquis was real simple to fix, I pushed the dimple out from the inside and it just popped right back into shape, you couldn't even tell there had been contact.

Sad part was, my wife wasn't even trying to leave. She was re-positioning the car to park it in the garage so my son could park on the side part of the driveway and she just slid down the whole driveway, across the street and into his car.

It was funny because I was inside watching the inauguration on TV and right at the moment Obama was repeating the "I solemnly swear" part of the oath the front door flew open and my wife was cussing like a damn sailor. I was like "I somehow don't think that's what he meant by swear" which caused her go go off even more. It took me a couple of minutes to understand what she was so upset about.

If I had been parked on the street (not actually possible because their driveway is opposite a cul-de-sac), then it might have been different because it would not have occurred on their own property.  It's my understanding that it was a combination of us being related and it being on their driveway.

Why does it matter how old the thread is? Doesn't it clutter up the site to have multiple threads all on the same topic?

That's actually a question I legitimately have: Two things are frowned upon–reviving old threads, and starting new threads for an existing topic. Where's the acceptable dividing line?

IMO, reviving an old thread is only frowned upon if the bumped post is superflous (see post #6 in this thread). It's up to you to decide where that grey area starts and ends.

Starting a new thread is frowned upon only if the new thread is redundant (eg. "A unique sign!" when the "Unique odd or interesting" thread already exists).

This.  If there's legitimate new information or material, then bumping an old post is considered acceptable.  Reviving an old thread just for the sake of posting something is not.

Let's take something like "Triple Left Turns".  We have a thread on that, although it hasn't been touched in a while.  If an intersection is reconstructed with 3 left turn lanes, it would be acceptable to reopen that topic.  It also shows that you've done a little research, found the topic, and maybe even looked thru it to confirm the intersection hasn't been listed.  Personally, I don't like topics such as "Hey, there's an intersection I know that has 3 left turn lanes.  Are there any others like that".  The answer is probably Yes, many times the intersection you're talking about is already mentioned, and now a bunch of people are going to post the same intersections that were already talked about.

Look, I know the search bar here is sometimes a little tricky to use, and if there's 10 pages within the topic, it can be a bear to look thru everything.  But at least attempt to do some research!
