The Williston Herald reports:

QuoteThe North Dakota Department of Transportation has begun the process of replacing welcome signs across the state.

The design features the new state logo and includes the first photo background used on a North Dakota welcome sign. The photo highlights the beauty of the North Dakota Badlands and was taken at Wind Canyon in the South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

"We are very proud of our state and these welcome signs are part of the first impression for visitors to North Dakota,"  said NDDOT Director Bill Panos. "The signs will provide a fresh new look for travelers and better represent the spirit of North Dakota."

The first sign was replaced yesterday on Interstate 94 at the Montana border near Beach. The remaining four signs will be replaced over the next few weeks.

Between this and the "great faces great places" signs in SD, the Dakotas are doing pretty nice. In terms of welcome signs, some are classics that should stay up for a while ("We're glad Georgia's on your mind" and "Drive friendly-the Texas Way"), but sometimes a change is...welcome. These new ND signs bring some nice spice.

They look very good, however, it has to be infuriating to be driving through on I-29 and seeing nothing but farms after that sign promised something intersting.

I'm taking the contrarian view.  They may look great now but after 3-4 years of Dakota weather, what will they look like then?
When you come to a fork in the road... TAKE IT.

I think they look great.  (Like above post, I do wonder about fading.) But ...

There's only 5 ways into ND?
And then, what's the 5th location? (I'm assuming both ends of I-94 and I-29 count as 1-4)
