My first thread in Off-topic. It's still fun

https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=25327.0

I don't get why it's funny.
Cause of formulanone saying "Why do you care?"

You do realize that was meant to point out that it's an inappropriate question for this forum, yeah?

No I did not. And I probably didn't read the guidelines before posting content like that.

So why bring it up again?
Don’t ask me how I know.  Just understand that I do.

I think this one here takes the cake.

Seriously though, tolbs, you gotta try and give what you post a second or third thought before actually posting it.

This is the type of stuff that bugs me; "funniest" = "stupid", in forum parlance. No..."funny" is where you laugh. And you can't nominate your own crap, that's just arrogant.

I think it's time to take things a little less serious and do the floss...

I don't see where that thread breaks the rules. It's in off topic, and talking about demographic change statistics without giving your own opinion isn't racism. It probably wasn't a good thread, but there's no rule violation.

The rules don't cover everything. Notably, NSFW content isn't mentioned at all; the only time it's ever come up since I joined in 2013 is when someone copied and pasted the wrong URL. The sub-discussion did get deleted, though.

Yes, I don't think that the thread broke any rules. Talking about race is not banned in the rules. Alps, who locked it, or another mod, should explain why it was locked.

Invariably any discussion about race is about politics.

And more to the point, chances are it will lead to people arguing eventually. We don't want flamefests here, cause if people are pissed off at each other, 1) one person in the fight might decide "fuck it" and quit the forum (and if that happens enough, the forum dies), 2) someone who isn't involved in the fight sees it, goes "wow I don't want to be around this shit" and quits the forum (and if that happens enough, the forum dies), 3) depending on the section, someone who is considering joining the forum might decide not to (and if there aren't new people joining the forum, eventually it will die), or 4) it means more work for the admins and mods trying to keep the above from happening.

All of the above are contributing factors to why MTR died. And you know where you can find people arguing about stuff like that? Facebook. Twitter. Now, consider this: why do we want that sort of environment here? And if you do want that sort of environment, why not just go to Facebook and Twitter and bask in it there instead of bringing the garbage here where we don't want it?

I still maintain that MTR's decline was a corollary to the decline of Usenet in general, starting when a number of ISPs dropped access because of threats of lawsuits and/or prosecution due to the amount of child porn found on binary groups.

I know we've talked about this before. A former attorney general of New York (the son of the guy the Tappan Zee Bridge is now named after) basically forced big ISPs to drop Usenet access.

https://www.cnet.com/news/n-y-attorney-general-forces-isps-to-curb-usenet-access/ is written from a technical, not political, perspective.

If Lars Ulrich knew about the MP3 binary groups, Napster would not have been his only target.

Government would be tolerable if not for politicians and bureaucrats.

Oh, that is all certainly a factor, which is why I called them "contributing factors" and not the sole reason why MTR died. Usenet's gradual decline meant that MTR's eventual death was all but assured as the medium died out.

By the mid-2000s, when I was first going online unsupervised, most online discussion had already shifted from Usenet to moderated Web forums like this one. My first Web interactions with others was on a forum, not Usenet. Usenet as a whole was already in decline by the time Andrew Cuomo even took office as NY attorney general, mostly due to already-existing difficulties in accessing it (the small rural ISP I had at the time never offered a Usenet feed to begin with, irrespective of Cuomo's feelings on the matter) and, primarily, a perception of it being more noise than signal. MTR was, however, able to stay afloat much longer than the rest of Usenet did; by the time this forum was founded the roadgeek community was one of the last holdouts still on Usenet. It remains the only reason I've ever had to actually learn how to get on Usenet; anything else I would have needed it for was already more easily accessed elsewhere by the time I got online.

How about "Don't start threads that might cause arguments"–is that a simple enough rule to be able to follow?

Merge early vs. zipper merge causes arguments but doesn't cause problems.

Well, yeah, but that's part of the main topic of the forum. We're here to discuss roads. Sometimes that will lead to acrimonious discussions, but that's what the staff are here to help manage and facilitate. What we're not here for is to babysit arguments that aren't about roads.
