Here are some signs that have been vandalized, making them hard to read:
All in Massachusetts:
MA 28 north, slightly south of 125: The "28" sign has a sticker that says "Speed Limit 5". It's not really speed limit 5.
I-495 south, between exits 46 and 45: Someone spray painted a 1 on a "Speed Limit 55" sign so 55 would say 155.
MA 129 west approaching 28: The "JCT" sign is missing, so all you see is "28", which may lead you to believe you're on 28.
MA 62, somewhere near its east end (forget where): The "62" is missing, leaving only "East".
US 1: Mile 66.6 has completely been taken down.

One general one i hate, when someone tags a bus stop sign to the point where you cannot see the buses that stop there.
I was recently in Parras, Coahuila, again. The city limit sign approaching from the east on Coah-103 has been graffitiieed to the point that you can't even read the city name. It wasn't like that last year. I can appreciate graffiti, but not when it obliterates other communication.
Wish I had a picture of the "STOP BUSH" stop sign in my neighborhood before it was cleaned up (this was around 2007).

"Stop Hammertime" in Reading.
For a while a few years ago, I was making weekly trips on US 131 to Big Rapids from the Grand Rapids area. There was a period where I'd pass exit 120 for M-57 to see someone's "creative" spray painting prowess at turning a Clearview 1 into a 4. First it was the gore sign northbound, which was replaced by the next week. (MDOT has a transportation service center near that exit.) Then on the third trip through, it was the southbound gore sign, but that person used red spray paint instead of white. Again, a week later, it was replaced.
Along Illinois Route 2, about 25 miles south of Rockford. Clever!

Car and Driver once had a picture of an orange sign saying "BUMP" that someone had spray-painted with "FIX" and "PLEASE."
When I was a young kid in New Lenox, IL, someone added a letter to make the sign say

That's similar to stupid things like painting a speed limit sign to say "SPEED LIMIT 135" or the like. There are four speed limit signs about a mile from our house to which someone did that and they've never been replaced–instead, for at least ten years now the vandalism has simply been covered up by red tape. It looks really stupid.
The quintessential vandalism of that sort, in my mind, that
might have been amusing 40 years ago but is now decidedly trite is the thing where some people STILL persist in scratching the hot-air hand-dryer instructions in public restrooms to say "1. Push butt. 2. Rub hands gently under arm. 3. tops all." I have no idea why some people still find that funny.

When I saw this thread, I immediately thought of the show The Screen Savers on TechTV. On the set, there was an old-school "NO LEFT TURN" sign but two extra words were added to kind of make it relevant for this call-in tech help show. Since I can't find a photo of the actual sign. I took an image of a regular NO LEFT TURN sign and added the two words myself. Here's what the sign looked like...

The red diamonds are replaced now, but for a while, someone had spray painted each diamond with a letter in black:
F - A - R - T
Yeah, really juvenile, but still frickin' hillarious... especially when someone painted over the letters, and they would bleed through at night with headlights!

Oh, I mean, how juvenile. (snicker...snicker...)
Vandalism of signs has gone way down since the 90's.
Some of the ones I've seen are:
DIP shit
don't STOP believin'
BIG bALLS DR (was BIG FALLS)
ROAD WORK HEAD (a was removed)
This one has been slightly altered :D

One of those "Why wasn't my camera ready?" moments happened last month. Driving U.S. 26-89 in Wyoming along the Snake River south of Grand Teton National Park. I didn't notice until I was almost past it, but a standard pictorial deer crossing sign (with the deer's front legs raised) had added to it the cowboy who usually rides the bronco on Wyoming license plates, waving his hat. It was so well done I wonder if it wasn't done at the sign shop.
I remember a 1990s issue of Car and Driver which showed a photo of a HILL sign, placed about halfway up an obvious hill in an urban area (San Francisco?) that had been vandalized with "no shit".
four consecutive examples of this exist on Mexico highway 3 between Ensenada and highway 5.

Unfortunately, since November 2012 (when this photo was taken), almost every freeway sign in Detroit, both Clearview and Highway Gothic :pan:, has been vandalized with similar graffiti.
I hate to give taggers, layabouts, property-destroyers, vandals, and other cretins their due, but in the spirit of the thread:

I'm sure I have more; "sticker bombing" seems to be a really common thing to do in urban parts of Florida. In closing, if you want to vandalize, make a point, like Banksy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banksy).
Edited to remove old links.
took me a second to note what was wrong with that Florida. "did someone really put a 'La' sticker on there??"
I don't mind a well-executed graffiti work (whether or not it makes a larger social point), but a quick three-second "tag" is the equivalent of my dogs pissing on a hydrant. great, you marked your territory. mother must be so proud.
Speaking of Florida...

Route markers in rural areas of Alaska once were routinely used for target practice. That seems to be less common nowadays, though part of the solution may have been to maintain very few route markers in rural areas (like on the Dalton Highway, which has an AK 11 marker every hundred miles or so). Also, to put them in relatively high-traffic areas like junctions where not only the signs are most needed but also any vandals would be more likely to be caught in the act by other motorists.
It has been suggested that such sign damage is accidental, as a result of flying gravel. But the holes are just the same as on this sign, at a rest area along the Seward Highway southeast of Anchorage, which is parallel to the highway (rather than facing one direction of traffic or the other), and about a hundred feet away. In this instance, the bullet holes are obviously an expression of opinion about the sign:

this Alaska example appears to be intact

I recently saw an overhead BGS that had a lot of spraypainted tagging on it. What caught both my wife and me by surprise is that it wasn't on a bridge–just a regular metal gantry. How did they pull that off?
Not on the picture, but this pedestrian - http://goo.gl/maps/QDPrg - has been carrying a coffee cup since around January. Pretty fitting on a college campus.
Sticker-bombing, as you put it, was a time-honored practice in the rapidly-waning days of exact-change lanes at toll booths. In New Jersey, the stickers over the Parkway baskets were a who's-who of local bands, whether it was the Clifton, Rutgers, Asbury, or way-down-the-shore scenes. Every now and then I'd see a friend's sticker and it was like a high-five to throw change at it.

I wish I'd gotten a picture of a similar sign on my college campus (back in the 1970s), where electrical tape was used to show the pedestrian carrying a briefcase in one hand and a gun in the other.

In the 1980s a friend of mine told me stories of a friend of his who had taken to amending "END CONSTRUCTION" signs with "FOREVER."
A long time ago, on the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit, there was an orange 'construction' sign which said MEN WORKING ABOVE.
Someone took a jumbo black sharpie and added the words: "SO FLASH 'EM".

There's one I'm familiar with that they tagged the back of the sign on a metal gantry (so at least the normally visible part of the BGS was clean). But without much housing in the immediate area, or congestion, whoever did it had to work hard to get to it.

In most shows & movies when they show a toll lane, it's the cleanest toll lane ever. Give Sopranos credit for showing the NJ Turnpike ticket machine as it actually existed - dirty, grimy, and covered with stickers.

If you click the link, it looks as though some sort of software was used in an attempt to transcribe the audio portion of the TV report regarding the sign. Like most such software, it didn't do a very good job.
Adding male genitalia to various animal crossing signs is old hat around here.
There have been more than a few instances of people putting round red adhesive objects at the spot where a deer's nose would be on "Deer Crossing" signs, or spray painting a red nose on them, turning them into "Rudolph Crossing" signs.
Along the Mountain Parkway in Kentucky, the big guide signs have been used often for target practice. This is a phenomenon that you don't see that much on other Kentucky freeways.
For some reason, I instantly thought of this opening scene:

Well, at least on I-495 in Massachusetts, discharging of passengers is not allowed. Not sure if discharging non-passengers is allowed.
I am still waiting for these to happen:
Route 60 becoming Speed Limit 60.
Unofficial change that makes the signs more accurate.

Well, the deer hear have their fawns on our property every year. Hence, we've nicknamed our place as the nursery.

Somebody around my area added a set of wings to a dear crossing sign.
Two questions:
(1) Why is that sign so special to you?
(2) Do people really only add wings to that one sign?
Well, the deer hear have their fawns on our property every year. Hence, we've nicknamed our place as the nursery.
And yes, this is the only sign somebody added it to. Seems to be a sticker added on. I have a picture on my memory card, just have to remember to take it off and get it post it.
I think you may have missed why he was pulling your chain.....
Meh. Maybe, I don't know. My life recently has been pretty crazy, so sometimes stuff gets past me. :(
"Dear crossing."
You know, like the old joke. Teacher wants the children to learn about wildlife, so she shows them pictures. They recognize the dog, the cat, the horse, and the elephant. But one baffles them.
"Come on, children. Its not too hard. What does your mother call your father when he kisses her?"
Suddenly Little Johnny in the back jumps up yelling. "I know, I know! That's a horny bastard!"

They've since been replaced with new signs, but for a long time most of the deer crossing signs on I-93 in the Wilmington (MA) and Andover (MA) area sported large red noses a la Rudolph. Many years ago, there was also the moose crossing sign on I-190 SB in Sterling (MA) that somebody added the outline of a squirrel to (the altered sign made the front page of the Worcester Telegram and Gazette)
I once encountered a Speed Limit 35 sign on a narrow township road that someone had very neatly and carefully changed to "85" with black paint.

When "area speed limit 30" signs were installed in my neighborhood in upstate New York three decades ago, the "3" was often sprayed into an "8." During the time of the Vietnam War, stop signs were often vandalized with "war."
Not sure what it's supposed to be, but at least they were neat about it.

I've seen this as well. I'm sure it's everywhere, but I saw it near College Hill in Easton, Pennsylvania. What I'm wondering is whether or not anybody's been stupid enough to follow the sign and actually try to go 85 on a residential street.
Another one I've seen that's probably everywhere is adding "hammer time" underneath "STOP"

The "coffee" I think is a piece of Velcro™. There would normally be a can of Red Bull ("<> gives you wings.") stuck on there as well. Someone tagged a STOP sign with blue paint along CADLE CROSSING RD in Windsor, near where one of my crushes used to live before she got the job at SCDOT. Other signs have been hit with similar vandalism along MONTMORENCI RD in Montmorenci in recent years, my local media even did stories about it.
Some people have made their own real life modifications with some of the "Welcome to Edmonton" signs. While the city of Edmonton is treating it as an act of vandalism, it's really well done

QuotePranksters take liberties with Edmonton welcome signs
The city of Edmonton was toying with the idea of new branding, but this might not be what they had in mind.
Professional-looking lettering and colouring matching the existing signs offered various slogans for motorists to read, including "˜City of Speed Traps, "˜Road Construction City' and "˜Suck it Calgary'.
And while passing drivers may have chuckled at the references, the City isn't laughing–calling the work vandalism and a matter under investigation.
http://metronews.ca/news/edmonton/812083/pranksters-take-liberties-with-edmonton-welcome-signs/#
What used to be in that location is "City of Champions", however the city is in the process of a rebrand.

Several months ago, right in front of Colorado Mesa University, someone put a real nice, perfectly measured, Hawaiian shirt "sticker" on a Ped Xing sign. By the time I got back there to take a photo, it was either removed or the sign was replaced.
Best one I know of was on RI 138 East on a hill coming up to the intersection with US 1. Theres been an orange construction sign there for years warning about a "Soft Shoulder to cry on". :)
I remember for several years in the 1990s there was a vandalized LGS for Prosperity Avenue here in Fairfax County. The sign indicated a right turn for Prosperity at the next light. Someone affixed a white-on-green bumper sticker with an arrow pointing left next to the word "Clinton" and an arrow pointing right next to the word "Prosperity."
I got a kick out of the way the colors matched the sign quite nicely.
There was actually a sign once upon a time that pointed to Clinton going left and Prosperity going right. It was located at the intersection of US 76 and SC 121. I had a black and white photo of the signage there at the time, as it got circulated pretty widely after Clinton's election and the newspaper where I worked received a copy with a submitted op-ed. I saved the pic, had it up on the wall in my office, but don't know what I've done with it. Several moves and job changes have taken their toll on where many of my things are stored. I drove through that intersection two years ago and the signage pictured in that 80's photo was gone.

Someone should tell the City of Aurora, Illinois this. They are famous for using "2-WAY" plaques for stop signs instead of "Cross Traffic Does Not Stop".
^^ It looks like everybody stops here, so an additional message about some traffic not stopping would not be inaccurate. There is a one-way street involved, so it's only a 3-way stop. "All way" would actually be more informative, though.

Just spray paint near markings that don't block any important information, but kinda funny to me. And now that I see the first picture, the yield line should be behind the crosswalk markings.

Just spray paint near markings that don't block any important information, but kinda funny to me. And now that I see the first picture, the yield line should be behind the crosswalk markings.
Not necessarily vandalism, since the road looks freshly refinished. Contractors in Nevada often use white spray paint to indicate where certain road features go, such as a "pilot line" that is used to lay out where the lane lines go so the paint truck can apply lines appropriately. The yield markings are often referred to as "shark's teeth", so this marking could have been that indication of where to apply the triangles.

I agree (X gets the square...) If you look closely, the shark teeth were painted
on top of the word SHARK, barely touching the "S" and definitely over the left half of the "R".
What would be funny if someone painted some red blotches and a chalk outline of a body on the pavement just before the teeth to indicate a shark victim... :bigass:
Just posted this one on the main site (https://www.aaroads.com/guide.php?page=i0095anafl), 2006 in Miami:

The same signs (https://www.aaroads.com/southeast/florida095/i-095_nb_exit_001b_08.jpg) are still up today and you can see where they scoured the surface to remove the graffiti.
Ah, so that explains why some of those BGS' are tricky to read at night:
Granted, the human eye will usually do a better job of perceiving light at night.

This is a DCR (formerly MDC) road. Signage > them.

Reverse curve is more of an engineering term for an S-curve.

Warning signs exist to warn drivers not from the area that an obstacle is ahead. Drivers not from the area probably don't understand "Reverse Curve".

It means "evruc."
I drove plenty of out-of-towners past that sign who asked me what it meant. There's not a clear intuitive meaning to that phrase, even if it makes sense in hindsight.

Installed when the road was bulit in the 1950s - white on green was used for nearly all signs on Storrow Drive at that time. And the sign had been modified by taggers to read "Reverse the Curse" every time the Red Sox had hopes of even reaching the playoffs.
After the Sox won the 2004 World Series, then Governor Mitt Romney had the sign removed. It was auctioned off and the proceeds went to the Jimmy Fund (the Red Sox's charity that supports childhood cancer research).

That's actually a pretty clever use of the sign, both by the taggers and by the governor.

I'm pretty sure it originally said "Bobbs Lake" though.
^ That second O in Boobs looks very... suspicious. It doesn't look as smooth as the O before it.
Yes, compare it to the "b" just after it, and the glyph looks nearly identical.
Yeah, that second "o" was probably originally a "b". I can tell. Someone could've just found a way to erase the top part of it, and the bottom left corner of it.
If it was direct-applied copy, it would be pretty trivial to achieve that with a box cutter.
Wasn't sure if this should go in Damaged or Vandalized, so I put it in both.

MA 12, southbound (in reality east) in Ashburnham used to have a moose sign. Someone affixed a large sticker of Rocky the Squirrel next to the moose. Rocky almost looked like he was talking to it. The sign disappeared a few years back, with the 2 metal posts still there holding up nothing.
Never did get a pic of it, which is a shame.

- I guess for Ohio State fans in the Toledo area, it's a lot easier to do it at the border than down in the Columbus area.
- Last I saw, the Welcome to Michigan sign was on an overhead in the median, although you could do it to "onroe county":

Not necessary a vandals job. Some of the PED XING signs do incorporate that "hula hoop" outline to indicate that pedestrians may be coming or going on either side(s) of the intersection.

Well, this used to be a standard one before someone drew that "hula hoop" on it. They did it to the one on the back of this one as well, but the other side of the street is still the same.

This must be a
very local thing because I never heard of such a thing before-- had I come upon it as a driver before today the extra feature would have been useless to me.
Most intersections would have pedestrians coming from both sides anyway so what would be the reasoning behind warning drivers anyway?

The hula hoop on the pedestrian is not a legitimate feature.
It can be tricky and seem like a real thing though. A few signs near my college campus got vandalized with this in recent years. The hoop was actually a clear sticker which, from a distance, a vehicle occupant wouldn't easily be able to discern the difference.

The red Rudolph noses are a common modification to deer crossing signs in Massachusetts - at one point, every deer crossing sign on I-93 between Medford and the New Hampshire line sported them. There were also the moose crossing signs on I-190 in Sterling (the first such signs in the state) that somebody amended by adding a silouette of a squirrel to (making it a "moose and squirrel" crossing sign - or would that be "watch for JayWarding").

The design of the sign is unique* and, while kind of a cool tradition for visitors, all the stickers does somewhat detract from what is still a cool sign. I kinda wish NDOT would put these on an overhead gantry to reduce the amount of stickers that get placed. (They could still keep the post-mounted version at the rest area, as it is a good photo op.)
* "Unique" in this sense refers to the uniqueness of this 'named highway' guide sign. I have not seen NDOT do any other special designs for any other guide signs denoting highway names. (The US 50 "Loneliest Road in America" signs are the only other comparable thing out there, but these have no green so I don't think of them as traditional guide signs.) I think NDOT made two each of two different designs for the Extraterrestrial Highway signs in 1996, and posted all four at dedication (one sign at each end of the route, and one in each direction at Rachel).
What's the deal with putting stickers on signs in Nevada and California? Why is it that people insist on doing that?

Couldn't tell you. Although I don't think it's a particularly widespread phenomenon, but it does seem to be slightly prevalent in some areas.
Better stickers than spray paint if you ask me. The spray paint abatement seems to greatly diminish sign reflectivity at night.

Happens a lot in Colorado as well, usually on significant signs (Welcome to Colorado signs, city/town limit signs, elevation markers, etc...)

Recently on my street, someone spray-painted the word "VANDALISM" on the stop sign so it looked like it said "STOP VANDALISM". Talk about irony!
Not vandalized, but earlier this year, I woke up to find this outside my window:
(snipped for the sake of privacy)
I do live on the corner where the sign was, but it was just picked straight up out of the ground and carried to the other side of the street and laid there. Amazingly, there wasn't a single dent or bend on the entire thing. Also, kudos to my town for getting the sign back up before the end of the day.

The Colorado and Wyoming welcome signs on I-25 are heavily stickered where people can reach them--you may not expect signs on an Interstate to be so accessible, but Wyoming built pull-offs for both signs (the pull-off for the Colorado sign is all in Wyoming, without even a merge striped by Colorado). I just took another look at this picture - I think that's my car in the picture. Unfortunately, you can't see much in the way of identifying marks (i.e., driver, license plate), but it does look like there is a purple sticker on the lower left corner of the windshield, which my car had at the time, though many people in the area have the same sticker (county park pass). The color, make, model, and wheels are all identical to mine, and I drive through there frequently.
Any CT people here.. i don't know but around here from Greenwich all the way to Norwalk someone has been sticking "rumble" stickers on everything from stop signs to city signs to state signs.. it's crazy..
