Quote from: formulanone on October 20, 2024, 08:09:13 PMEither a user is new to the hobby, and should do some bit of research to answer most questions (some are naturally going to appear), or they're just looking for attention. The crazier the responses, the greater chance the OP will either disappear (if they were actually serious, and now has their feelings hurt) or will just keep going to the crazy well, as users just feed that constant urge from the OP. Sometimes there's a lack of restraint from just a few users which is enough to keep stoking the ego of bad actors or troublemakers.

I don't think it is a reasonable expectation that people new to the community should search out the answer rather than simply ask a question. Forums by their nature are dynamic, and many of them engage in banter back and forth. If you want to invite new people to participate, you have to realize that they are going to come with "newbie" related questions - referring them to a topic where this was discussed back in 2019 isn't always welcoming or helpful.

That is fair too, but I think the larger point (in my understanding) was:

(1) Ask the question once and wait for it to be answered before asking it again repeatedly.
(2) If you do need to ask again, follow up, or clarify, use the existing thread and don't pepper the forum with multiple threads about the same topic.

I agree with both of your points.

One thing I should also say is that this forum is pretty complex for the amount of traffic. It has 23 boards! Do we need a board specifically to talk about bridges? I don't know, but we do.

And some have multiple sub-boards. For as long as I have been here, TODAY was the first time I have gone to the "Road-Related Illustrations" sub-board.

Newbies are probably going to have a more difficult time navigating this than we think they are.

A search suggests this thread was probably about the closest things got. Not counting Poiponen's digression about a girl coming over to lick his toilet (a digression I believe the moderators deleted when several of us went quite overboard in responding).

I'd imagine the Regional Boards exist because there's lots of members who typically just hang out there. Not everyone travels the nation and then some, or have the same curiosity about how lettered routes in Wisconsin differ from those in Missouri.

Some random intersection replacement thread or four-lane project would get drowned out quickly in an overall "National" thread. And I think it's cool that these multi-year-aged threads just keep getting updated, if it follows the flow of the project from proposal to completion (or non-completion).

The reason given was the following. Some of the responses got exceptionally offensive at times. In retrospect, I have my doubts as to whether Poiponen even understood most of the sexual references people made (whether because of his age, his rather obvious mental disabilities, or both, I have no idea). I kind of doubt he even understood my relatively harmless comment about how if I were still single and a girl visited my house, the toilet would not be what I'd be hoping she would lick.

This is a thing she should do when she comes to my house.

During the whole MMM and P13 era there was a week I wasn't on the forum.  A couple people asked me off forum why that was.  I told them the truth, I was considering quitting over rampant spammy posts that went were being unanswered by moderation at the time.

What actually brought me back was concern from the other GN writers about someone maintaining our updates page in the User Content board.  Yes, a lot of my responses to P13 during toilet incident weren't nice but something adjutacative had be done with him.  Why does someone who clearly doesn't understand the chaos they are causing even need to be here?  My opinion is that they don't.

Maybe Corey was onto something suggesting the spam chased a lot people away?  For example, when is the last time sometime has heard from kphoger?

P13 shouldn't have been here to make a comment about wanting her to come over lick his toilet.  While I'm guilty of making fun of him, I also was clear in that cycle of posts that he really ought to get the boot.  It wasn't the most classy thing to bait Cra_shIt either, but it ultimately got him on the forum.

Yes, I think this is the longest one also.  And who knows what the actual reason is?  He'd probably say if someone asked him (he has in the past).

I should clarify, all the above I feel like the forum has moved past.  It is way harder for spammy posters to even register which I think is acting as a filter.  Even if they got on and starting causing havoc, I think the mod staff likely will act quickly.

I'm curious how many of us were deep enough in P13 lore to know that at the time; I don't think I found out until he was finally banned.  I don't even know what her actual name is because the word filter was installed by the time I found out she even existed.  Some of this may have happened in the time period between when I determined that P13 was just posting nonsense drivel but before the back and forth had produced a train wreck that was impossible to look away from.

Ultimately, P13 was in the best position to know Sault Saint John Madden's age, and should have known better than to talk about his sexual fetishes concerning a minor (or, for that matter, to even have such thoughts to begin with).  Thus, I'm quite comfortable considering the fault to be his for posting that comment in the first place.

I tend to find a lot of the weird stuff that crosses the forum to be amusing, but at the same time don't like when the forum gets overrun with inane nonsense.  Everything in moderation, after all.  As Aristotle said, virtue is the mean between two vices, and that is definitely true with some of this stuff.  I do think the forum has had a better balance recently than it has in the past (like, say, a year or two ago; there was a time when it was taking several hours to check just the fraction of posts I read, much of it of the "not worth the time but can't look away" variety).
