Check out an awesome high resolution 1967 color photo of Downtown Chattanooga...this is a short slide presentation and the photo to see is the 2nd one:

In addition to a ton of lovely cutouts, two things of interest jumped out at me:
1.  An I-124 shield on the right hand side
2.  If you look carefully on both the cutouts and the non-cutout shields, the cardinal directions are *inside* the arrows, even the single direction ones.  Tennessee still does a version of this on double-arrow panels but the letters are on the outside of the arrows.

This circular Mountain Parkway sign still kicks in Beattyville, KY. Not sure how many of these are left but some previous discussion indicates no more than four.

Wasn't sure what topic to post this in, but it's an old sign, so it fits.

That route isn't even KY-52 anymore either. A true relic of the past.

16 got rerouted in the early 70s along 15th St. This was always a clusterf*ck intersection.

People were basically like oh crap because they were scrambling to make the right turn onto 16 right at the end of the curve. In general, the old 16 routing was just a mess of zig-zag turns through the city. Many of the old buildings downtown got torn down for the University as seen on GSV. The Historic Aerials website also does a good job showing where the old routes used to go under the topos tab.

I grew up there, so I remember a lot of that. Plus I have a full run of ARDOT maps from 1938+

You guys know that's where I live, right?

And that route is KY 52. KY 11 and KY 52 are concurrent for a short stretch. I'm not sure how long the arrows have been gone, but this is where KY 52 used to turn right to join the KY 11 concurrency.

There are three of the circular markers left -- this one and two in Salyersville. There's an old-style marker on a square blank at the intersection of US 60 and KY 627 (West Lexington Avenue and Maple Street) in Winchester. You see it at the intersection as you go east on US 60.

Government would be tolerable if not for politicians and bureaucrats.

"Fakebook"? I don't know what you are referring to, but my initial thought was that it was from a website that made fake images (thus making this image fake).

"Fakebook"?

One of the few things worth reading on Urban Dictionary.   :-D

I coined that term without Urban Dictionary, though it's not surprising others are using it.

UDOT recently posted this: "Here's a #TBT of westbound I-80 approaching I-15 in South Salt Lake in 1971. There are a LOT more ramps at this interchange now."

Good evidence that older signs are not necessarily better.

Also that bigger signs are not necessarily a waste of space.

Indeed. From the looks of it, the sign size came first; message second.

That is how signage should look!  If not for the "acid rain", the button copy signs would have been longer lasting without the "draining" paint that seemed to be on a lot of older signs.

Also, excellent "classic" I-80 and I-90 signage.  In the title of a country song by Boy Howdy, in 1994, "They Don't Make 'Em Like That Anymore".

This rare Utah button‐copy Rest Area wayfinder is still standing.  This at I-70.Exit 86:

Like the rest area itself, it has probably remained untouched since the 80s.

You would need to save the photo and upload it elsewhere for us to see that after 24 hours (since the link has now expired).
