In addition to a ton of lovely cutouts, two things of interest jumped out at me:
1.  An I-124 shield on the right hand side
2.  If you look carefully on both the cutouts and the non-cutout shields, the cardinal directions are *inside* the arrows, even the single direction ones.  Tennessee still does a version of this on double-arrow panels but the letters are on the outside of the arrows.

People were basically like oh crap because they were scrambling to make the right turn onto 16 right at the end of the curve. In general, the old 16 routing was just a mess of zig-zag turns through the city. Many of the old buildings downtown got torn down for the University as seen on GSV. The Historic Aerials website also does a good job showing where the old routes used to go under the topos tab.

And that route is KY 52. KY 11 and KY 52 are concurrent for a short stretch. I'm not sure how long the arrows have been gone, but this is where KY 52 used to turn right to join the KY 11 concurrency.

There are three of the circular markers left -- this one and two in Salyersville. There's an old-style marker on a square blank at the intersection of US 60 and KY 627 (West Lexington Avenue and Maple Street) in Winchester. You see it at the intersection as you go east on US 60.

That is how signage should look!  If not for the "acid rain", the button copy signs would have been longer lasting without the "draining" paint that seemed to be on a lot of older signs.

Also, excellent "classic" I-80 and I-90 signage.  In the title of a country song by Boy Howdy, in 1994, "They Don't Make 'Em Like That Anymore".
