Alaska still does in fact have button copy, near Juneau on AK 7 (and I have a small photo thereof).  Delaware is one state I've never heard of having button copy.

not for a while now - I have seen an old embossed, cateyed, Delaware US 13 shield.

Is button copy all that rare?

It's pretty close to dead in Arkansas since the new BGS's on I-40. Missouri has spotty coverage, but Oklahoma still has a bunch scattered around (lots in OKC).

Last one I saw in Texas was circa 2004 at Paris

I intend to check Mississippi & Louisiana in the next couple weeks.

There are still some button copy signs hanging around in Texas. San Antonio had a bunch left somewhat recently for instance.

I have never seen button copy in either LA or MS, and if it was used for a guide sign, it was probably an extremely rare instance.

Louisiana used to have one random stray on US-90.  Otherwise, there are glass-reflector signs dating back to 1936 (!) on the old Huey Long Bridge.

Miss and LA used to have cateyed signs back in the day.  I am quite sure every state did, at least sporadically.  Mainly stop signs and other warning signs, occasionally shields.  As for cateyed guide signs, some did, some didn't.

Is button copy all that rare?  It's everywhere along the I-71 corridor here in Cincinnati.  I assume most of it is from the early to mid 1970s when the highway was built, and it's all in fine shape.  There's not much along I-75, which was built in the 50s and 60s, so most of those signs have been replaced.  Is it more of a state by state thing as far as rarity goes?

Not much longer.

See the Re: The Clearview thread

Later in the thread I have some "before" pictures.

Here's another one showing the new sign posts:

Out here in Western Colorado, what was left of the button-copy signs has been replaced within the last 3 to 4 years.   :-(

The neat thing about C-DOT signs is that for the last 20 or so years, they have put stickers on the front corners of signs that show the year the signs were installed (similar to renewal stickers on license plates).  This includes any C-DOT sign from BGSs to little 'directional arrow' signs.

One of these days, I'm going to get photos of each year's sticker as far back as possible, since each year is a different color pattern and it would make a great quick reference as to the "age" of the sign.

I definitely noticed that, driving on major state highways.  Are they gone from old alignments too?  I know old US-6 had a couple, like the town boundary for Rifle, as recently as 2006.

What!? NOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!   :banghead: I never got a chance to take a picture of it!

Jim Lindsay and I got to the sign just as they were parking a truck in front of it.

now pray to whichever deity you think is most helpful in this situation that they were merely cleaning it and/or repainting the faded numbers.

Man, and you didn't stick around to see? The only time I've seen ODOT actively replacing/removing signs was when they were decommissioning OK-74A. I would have got to chat with the guys in the fraggin' wagon and tried to wheedle a 74A shield out of them, had I not been in the process of going to work...

Dude, could you send me a copy of the picture? I tried to get a pic in January, but I was too far to get anything!

no, we had a lot of Detroit to scour, and what were we gonna do, take home a 12x7 green sign?

I definitely noticed that, driving on major state highways.  Are they gone from old alignments too?  I know old US-6 had a couple, like the town boundary for Rifle, as recently as 2006.

They had a few button-copy on US 6/50 near Mack (UT/CO Border), those have been replaced...Haven't traversed US 6 through Rifle in months, but the only one I remember seeing recently was a Button-Copy Glenwood Springs City Limit sign on Old US 6 west of the West Glenwood Exit.

CDOT really pulled a major EPIC FAIL for US 6 at that exit:

If you are Westbound on I-70, and get off at Exit 114 (West Glenwood) You'll see US-6 West on the BGS for the roundabout (at appx the 11:30 position on the sign)...http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Rifle,+co&sll=42.382676,-83.217675&sspn=0.001954,0.004823&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Rifle,+Garfield,+Colorado&ll=39.56094,-107.358734&spn=0.000457,0.002411&t=h&z=19&layer=c&cbll=39.560941,-107.358734&panoid=nWfUxaSqAyusHJgv52NiiQ&cbp=11,309.59,,0,-4.86

Then, if you were to follow this sign for "US 6 West" on the roundabout...http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Rifle,+co&sll=42.382676,-83.217675&sspn=0.001954,0.004823&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Rifle,+Garfield,+Colorado&ll=39.5616,-107.361317&spn=0.003656,0.01929&t=h&z=16&layer=c&cbll=39.561592,-107.361315&panoid=u1IH5n3OfIOSROtxX4GAtw&cbp=11,278.39,,0,-2.3

And go a few blocks west, you see two sizable "No Outlet" signs...(Hard to see on this picture, but there is one on either side of the road)...
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Rifle,+co&sll=42.382676,-83.217675&sspn=0.001954,0.004823&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Rifle,+Garfield,+Colorado&ll=39.561587,-107.3663&spn=0.000914,0.004823&t=h&z=18&layer=c&cbll=39.561589,-107.366302&panoid=MQl0BSgmTeCNOVtXQUHj2A&cbp=11,319.57,,0,5

BTW, spin the camera 180 degrees, you'll see that only (Glenwood Springs) Button Copy sign I know of still in existence. (On the frontage road -- not the EB lanes of I-70...:)

.

If you look closely at the pedestrian bridge, there were two separate fences that prevented people from crossing over the freeway.  Perhaps they were preparing to tear down the bridge??

You know, I think it might be worth wild to split off the thread and have a seperate one for all button copy finds.

It's not that rare in Ohio....I could fill up 2,000 images just in this area alone.

bugo

Button copy is something that has recently started to disappear.  There used to be a lot of button copy in Arkansas but most of it was replaced by Clearpuke.

But not gone completely, this from this past Christmas!

True mightyace.  However, they are disappearing.  Sometime between June '08 and June '09, US-22 between US-219 and I-99/US-220 along the freeway section there lost all of it's button copy signs.  Was a victim of a mass sign replacement. :(

Alps

PA still has some button copy.  Check Philly or Pittsburgh, for example, where it's the rule instead of the exception.

I-77 north of Charleston is still all button copy...PA there's places throughout the state that has it.
