A 0.9 mile long portion of Route 213 through in Rosendale has been closed. The car detour is, however 3 times as long as the closed stretch at 2.7 miles. No listed of reason but public safety:

From what I remember of the area, having been there not too long ago, there's a chance that melting groundwater is making the ground unstable underneath as it flows down the mountain to the river.  That's all I got.

State to reopen Route 213 in Rosendale
Published: 2:45 PM - 10/22/10
ROSENDALE – The state planned to reopen a stretch of Route 213 near Rosendale that was closed in March because the roadway was sliding toward the Rondout Creek.
The road was expected to reopen Friday evening. The state Department of Transportation warned of alternating lane closures while workers finished the repairs.
Erosion had caused a roughly 4,000-foot stretch of the highway to fail and slide down a 33-foot embankment. The DOT had to design a special fix for the road because of the underlying D&H Canal and nearby Indiana bats, a protected species.

From the Middletown (NY) Times Herald-Record.

Thanks Al - and welcome to the forum!  Beautiful highway up there, but it's obvious that something like that could easily happen.  (Incidentally, the news site mistakenly says they're Indian bats, at least when I just accessed it.  Now THAT's quite some distance to fly...)
