Can states change their borders?

hotdogPi

I believe West Virginia and Virginia did in 1997 because of ambiguity. More recently, North Carolina and South Carolina had a tiny realignment.

Can states change their borders?
Yes but it will be a pain in the ass to do so. Congress

Roadgeekteen

Both states have to agree and congress has to sign off on it.

Find out.

Yes, but can borders change their states?

Yes. See Kentucky Bend, the US 41 twin bridges between Evansville and Henderson, and other places where rivers have changed course.

Nothing will come of this, of course.  This bubbles up every so many years, because the western 3 counties of Maryland are vastly different from the rest of the state.  I think this time it is related to redistricting, as Maryland likes to draw really convoluted lines to dilute the votes of groups that disagree with majority.

Kind of wondering what this would look like in the roads world. I-68 would be intrastate, I-70 would enter West Virginia twice, and I-81 would enter one less state.

Weld County, Colorado like to think about joining Wyoming every once in a while too.  Good riddance.

And the counties in SW Minnesota float the idea of joining South Dakota once in a while, though this time their governor has encouraged those people to pack up and move across the border.

A few Oregon counties voted in a non-binding referendum last year to join Idaho. If Idaho wants to take on the burden of subsidizing nowhereland, it's on them, but it will take a lot more convincing to reach the group's goal of an Idaho Coast.

Maybe they could swap the eastern panhandle of WV for the western panhandle of MD. After all, Berkeley Springs, Martinsburg, and Charles Town are closer to Annapolis than they are Charleston.

I'm not entirely sure what you're suggesting, but if it's "draw a line due north from Virginia's northernmost point until you hit Pennsylvania and put both sides in their respective states", that could work quite well.

That would effectively be a swap of the panhandles, and certainly the northernmost tip of Virginia would be the only logical place to start, so I would presume that is correct.

Then we would no longer have two states with the same shape.
Indiana: counties 100%, highways 100%
Illinois: counties 100%, highways 61%
Michigan: counties 100%, highways 56%
Wisconsin: counties 86%, highways 23%

Slightly different, but anyone remember this change.org poll that went viral 2 years ago to sell Montana to Canada?

Off I go. Might as well take Larimer and Jackson counties with me.

Larimer has no interest in going anywhere I'm sure.  All 7 people in Jackson might want to come with.  :)

Dirt Roads

How about the big border changes between Georgia and South Carolina due to the shifting of main channel of the Savannah River.  I recall that the resurvey was conducted sometime around 1999 or 2000.

United States of Canada/Jesusland was much more widespread.
