Someone said in the suspension bridge thread that we haven't needed any new major bridges because all the needed crossings have been crossed, e.g. Golden Gate, Mackinak, Verrazano...
However, there are some major projects underway or pending due to infrastructure that needs to be modified/replaced. Just in the NYC area...
Tappan Zee
Goethals
Bayonne (lift)
Kosciusko
Also, the Delaware river turnpike bridge is slated to be twinned sometime before we're all dead. It seems twin spans are the rage lately.
What other major American bridge projects are there?
Early early in the process, but I-49 over the Arkansas River (http://talkbusiness.net/2014/07/engineering-work-needed-for-350-million-i-49-arkansas-river-bridge/). $350mill+
Whether it'll ever get built is another matter but.....................
The "Great Bridge" project from east of McGehee, AR to Benoit, MS (part of the HPC 18/I-69 "family"). Most of the renderings I've seen show it as a cable-stayed structure; have no idea if any design details are written in stone at this point. Also whether or not it'll encompass rail facilities in addition to freeway lanes seems also to be a point of conjecture.
The Nice Bridge over the Potomac River between Maryland and Virginia, which is part of U.S. 301. Governor Larry Hogan evidently approved plans to widen the bridge from two lanes to four.

I am glad the Nice Bridge is getting a replacement. Long overdue. Not really impressive engineering wise... Noe another Chesapeake Bay crossing would impress me

That's a fairly large cantilever bridge across the Mississippi River... I'll allow it! Any word on what the replacement will look like?
Should also add the Louisville bridge projects... Downtown Crossing (half of I-65) and East End Crossing (I-265), both high traffic cable stay bridges across the Ohio River. Apparently a new E-Z Pass toll agency is being created in the process.

The Brent Spence Bridge, of course. But with all the talk of a new bridge, the latest actual work on it I can find is from 2012. It's all talk and no work.
There's a plan to replace the Brent Spence Bridge, which carries both I-71 and I-75 across the Ohio River between Cincinnati, OH and Covington, KY.
http://www.brentspencebridgecorridor.com/ (http://www.brentspencebridgecorridor.com/)
Also in the New York area -- actually on the New Jersey side of the Hudson River -- is the Wittpenn Bridge, which carries NJ-7 over the Hackensack River. Not a major crossing, but it's apparently an 11-year project. This will be a rare lift bridge, at a higher level to replace an existing, old-school lift bridge akin to the I-280 Stickel Bridge in Newark, or those found among several railroads in the area, active and non-active.

Rendering here (http://"http://www.state.nj.us/transportation/commuter/roads/rt7wittpenn/")
Then there's the nearby Pulaski Skyway, an elevated highway opened in the 1930s, which includes truss spans across both the Hackensack and Passaic rivers. Not a bridge replacement, but major rehabilitation.

I-74 across the Mississippi River is coming soon, per 73 of 129 here. (http://www.idot.illinois.gov/Assets/uploads/files/Doing-Business/Letting-&-Bidding-Reference/042817/Vol20n12.pdf)
In Texas, the new Corpus Christi Harbor Bridge is under way. At 1661 feet for its main span, the project web site says that it will be the longest cable-stayed span in the United States. It also has a vertical clearance of 205 feet.
www.harborbridgeproject.com (http://www.harborbridgeproject.com)
In Houston, bids are being received for the $962 million replacement for the existing Beltway 8/Sam Houston Tollway bridge, opened in 1982. The project will include deconstruction/removal of the existing bridge, which has a 175 foot vertical clearance. The new bridge will have two spans, each with four lanes and full shoulders.

It's suppose to be a tied arch; the plans are probably linked somewhere in the forum already, but renderings (outdated? I thought it was supposed to have diagonal suspenders) are here. (http://www.idot.illinois.gov/Assets/uploads/IDOT-Projects/District-2/US-52-IL-64/files/MS_bridge_boards_web.pdf)
There's also the IL 104 bridge over the Illinois River at Meredosia in progress, Google has aerials showing some work underway. (https://www.google.com/maps/@39.832221,-90.5670912,858m/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en) Supposed to be another tied arch.
The IL 178 Illinois River crossing at Utica will also be replaced soon.

Not really a project now, they're completed bridges and the toll agency began collecting tolls last December.
QuoteIt seems twin spans are the rage lately.
Not completely. While this is a small one compared to some big city bridges, a regionally large one is the I-91 West River bridge replacement near Brattleboro, VT. This one is notable for replacing two separate spans (one for each direction) with a single span located where the old northbound span used to be. VTrans is also about to replace the I-91 bridges over the Williams River near Rockingham, VT in a similar manner...replacing two separate spans with a single span for both directions.

The replacement Jeremiah Morrow Bridge on I-71 over the Little Miami River is being replacing two separate spans with a single-span for both directions. It seems that replacing older 2-span bridges with a single span is fairly popular.

Will this be a tied-arch (deck
through the structure) or a deck arch (deck
atop the arch itself)? Either way, it'll need substantial clearance over the navigable river channel.
The new St. Croix River crossing near Stillwater, MN is a pretty big deal for Minnesota and Wisconsin. Thread from the Midwest board. (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=5160.0) The bridge is supposed to be completed this year, however.

From what I hear they're tearing the original Savanna-Sabula bridge down when they finish the new bridge. While I'm for a replacement, (it is necessary) (this bridge definitely does not meet today's needs) I hate to see this one go down, It's probably one of my favorite bridges. In my opinion, the bridge should be preserved in some way. How? Pedestrians? Bikes? I'm not sure.
There is that small bridge on I-85 in Atlanta that made the news the other day. Re-construction is set to be complete by June.

Nice! Always liked tied-arch designs; they seem to convey a sense of safety to drivers passing over the bridge (myself included) that's not particularly present on a deck sitting atop the arch itself.

My bad, the news outlets for whatever reason keep referring to it as a "bridge", even though it isn't much of one. Just thoguht it was interesting. Anyway if we are talking about big crossings, the new Tappan Zee looks great. I drove up there a few weeks ago. lots of builders are using Cable-Stayed I notice. Can't wait to drive over it. Now the question is what will it be called?
Hey by any chance does anyone know the reason the Goethals is being replaced? The only thing i can think of is that the lanes are not up to current Interstate standards with how narrow they are but thats about it.
One to add to the list is the I-69 Bridge over the Ohio. Per it's own thread the the two states are working on the enviromental paper work with a view of having actual construction work start in 3-5 years.
I'm guessing it is because the Louisville bridges are complete, it is going to be funded by bonds and tolls, and it's low hanging fruit compared to the mess that the Brent Spence is going to be for Ohio and Kentucky...

Similar reasons as the Tappan Zee... it is functionally obsolete. It wasn't built to handle the traffic demand that is on it now and it is old and in danger of falling apart. I drove on it recently and it's pretty scary how high and narrow and crowded it is, despite the high toll.
Oh ok. I knew the Tappan Zee was in bad shape because it was made of materials used during a shortage due to the Korean War. it was only meant to last about 50 years. I knew the Goethals had old and outdated narrow lanes but had no idea it was in that bad of shape as well. And the Kosciuzko looks EXTREMELY outdated and rusty.

The lanes are only 10' wide, not a lot of margin for error with tractor-trailers up to 102" wide -- do the math, that's 9 inches of clearance on each side. And there are no breakdown shoulders to speak of, so any time a vehicle breaks down, there's a major traffic backup.

Strictly speaking, it is not a widening of the existing crossing. It is the construction of an entirely new bridge with four lanes (plus shoulders and a multi-purpose trail) and the eventual abandonment and demolition of the existing structure that was opened in 1940.

I fully expect this to get underway when the new Goethals is complete. The two original bridges were built around the same time and have similar utilization and similar problems today.
Interesting! I take it will be another Cable Stayed Bridge of course. Six lanes, full outer shoulders and a sidewalk and possible space for a transit line.

It has a long detour but well signed. I was out there a few weeks ago and all the girders had been placed and they were about to start building the roadway deck. Should be complete soon.
Not a very impressive bridge, but still important for East Coast travel - the replacement of the elderly and structurally deficient Canton Viaduct on I-895 (Harbor Tunnel Thruway) in Baltimore is advertised for bids right now. There will be extended periods of one lane being open in each direction, and there will also be total shutdowns of I-895 on weekends.
In addition to the replacement of the viaduct (which is about 1 mile long), the contractor will also have to do some significant repair and rehabilitation work in the tunnel tubes.
See the I-895 (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=13902.0) thread for details.
Oregon SR 38 is getting a new bridge across the Umpqua River by Scottsburg with construction supposedly beginning in 2019 and finishing in 2022. The current bridge dates back to the late Twenties. It is narrow with terrible approaches.
Just started on 38: A massive culvert repair project that will go through the end of 2018. Two culverts will be replaced by very small sections of bridging.

Approvals were issued this week for a replacement for the 87 year old Ambassador Bridge between Detroit and Windsor. The bridge's ownership have stated that the new structure will be North America's longer cable-stayed bridge.
Construction is speculated to start in about a year, about the same time as work goes ahead on the new Gordie Howe International Bridge two miles downstream.
There are two replacements in progress for bridges across the Illinois River in Illinois:
* IL 178 at Utica (in the early stages of construction)
* IL 89 at Spring Valley (appears to have most of the beams up)
Then there's the replacement of the US 54/Champ Clark Bridge across the Mississippi at Lousiana, MO.

I know the design is limited by cost issues, but to me it seems that one has too many piers in the water and should have a longer span and less piers for barges to strike.
NJ has two major ones as the Pulaski Skyway and NJ 72 Bridges.
