Title: Reminder - Baltimore Road Meet - April 17
Post by: Alps on April 02, 2010, 06:52:56 PM
For those who have RSVPed (or think you have), check the bottom of this message.  If you don't see your name, or if I have the wrong number of people down, please let me know!  For those of you who haven't RSVPed:

The Baltimore meet will commence at 11:00 AM with food and (for some of us) drinks at:

Red Brick Station
8149 Honeygo Blvd
White Marsh, MD 21236
410-931-7827

http://www.redbrickstation.com/pages/directions.html

From there we will leave to tour the I-695/I-95 and I-895/95 interchange rebuilds, the I-395 aerial wye, abandoned I-170, and other goodies to be revealed at the meet.  Even if you've already indicated an interest, please RSVP to me at webmaster@alpsroads.net by April 10 so I can confirm an accurate headcount at the restaurant.  I look forward to seeing you all there!  (Right now, it looks like we have at least 20 attendees!!)

Current RSVP count (includes # who will be at restaurant):
Myself - 2
BMP - 1
AF - maybe 1
IL - 1
SD - 2
AK - 1
MP - 1
PA - 1
ASD - 1
BRK - 1
HBE - 1
SMK - 1
BR - 1

I still find it rather sick that at least five are from Michigan.

Well there's nothing that says you Michiganers *HAVE* to make the trek east... :spin:

Meanwhile, as I mentioned in my E-mail to Steve, I won't know until that morning whether or not I can make it.  The problem of these things being scheduled on duty weekends...(and why I was pushing for the 10th earlier)

I can figure out who most of these are by their initials, but a couple of them I'm still trying to figure out.

I do have a supply of the newly-released 2010 Kentucky maps that I'll be bringing.

I remain a maybe- I've talked to the AAG (who determines whether I get a free plane ticket to Washington) and I may not know until five days before the meet.

I was considering trying to make it to the lunch portion of the meet, due to a bachelor party in Atlantic City I am going to later that day.  But I decided that may be too much driving (it's 2.5-3 hours between Baltimore and Atlantic City), so I am going to have to bow out on this one, and just explore south Jersey some more that day.

I currently do intend on attending the Philadelphia meet for whenever that is scheduled, and then catch a minor league baseball game after the meet.

Well, I'm going because this will be my first time east of Cleveland, OH. Btw, AJ and I are planning on making a quick stop top grab a bunch of the new 2010 MDOT maps on the way.

Thanks, Doug! You unknowingly reminded me to get a new batch of Kentucky goodie bags together and update them with the 2010 map. I also have a hodgepodge of promotional items I've picked up at various conferences and meetings and I will throw a randomly-selected representative item from this potpourri of treats into the bags, and recipients can trade if they don't like what they get and they like something else that was in someone else's bag. Too bad the Baltimore meet is before, not after, the conference where I usually pick up a boatload of this stuff.

My goodies will include a stack of duplicate road atlases, including some Rand McNallys and National Geographics going back to the 1990s, which attendees can pick through before I dispose of the leftovers.

My goodie bags are basically unchanged from last year, except that I added the '10 map to the '09 version. I had a few left over from my travels last year and made up some new ones and I also have extra maps. So it's all good.

Given the expected numbers on Saturday, you might want to consider splitting up the tour part into two separate groups.

Or make up and print out maps for everyone to use so everyone will know what the next stop is in case some get separated from the rest.

My suggestion is this.

Let's have that each car has a person who uses the cell phone (for whoever's riding in who's car) and at that point, if someone gets lost, we'll call someone else and get it. Its like a circle of cells (1 in each car).
Title: Re: Reminder - Baltimore Road Meet - April 17
Post by: froggie on April 14, 2010, 06:02:36 PM
I like HBE's suggestion better.  That's what I did for the DC meet, and it worked well.

But the other thing to consider is that if we have a large number of people on the tour, that'll require a large number of vehicles.  And then you run into parking issues at the tour stops, especially within the urban core.  Hence why it might be a good idea to split the tour into two (or more) completely separate groups.
Title: Re: Reminder - Baltimore Road Meet - April 17
Post by: Alps on April 14, 2010, 07:36:17 PM
I've planned the tour stops (3 total) in places that should have plenty of, or at least enough, parking for about 8-10 vehicles.  There will only be one tour group.  I'm collecting cell phone numbers now - I'll be the point person for people getting lost etc.
Title: Re: Reminder - Baltimore Road Meet - April 17
Post by: Ian on April 14, 2010, 07:40:00 PM
If carpooling is going to be an option during the meet, our car cannot fit another person in.
Title: Re: Reminder - Baltimore Road Meet - April 17
Post by: hbelkins on April 14, 2010, 09:00:15 PM
I always ride with someone anyway, since there's no room in my truck, unless I'm breaking off from the tour early to head out. That won't be a problem this time since I plan to spend Saturday night in La Vale (near Cumberland.)

Although my attendance probability is now about 50-50 due to a sick critter. Most likely I'll just be driving up on Friday instead of doing an extra day of exploring and county-collecting. Looks like clinching Maryland and New Jersey will have to wait for the proposed Philly meet weekend.

What we should insist on is that we use whichever vehicles will fit the most comfortably. If we can have it so there's 5 per vehicle (know that mine should), that would be ideal. If they could figure how to handle 100+ vehicles on tours in the 1910s, we should have no problem at all almost a century later.

QuoteIf they could figure how to handle 100+ vehicles on tours in the 1910s, we should have no problem at all almost a century later.

Traffic's gotten a bit thicker over the past century...:)

We used 3 vehicles during the DC meet.  Trying to use anything more than 5 would have been impossible given the parking limitations at a couple of the stops.

I have to be careful whoever's car I am in. I'm having a lot more problems due to my height and weight, getting in and out of cars, especially short ones.

I'm going to do my best to encourage 4 per car.  And strongly discourage 2 per car.  One of our three meet stops will only have parking for about 7-8 cars at most, so we can't have a convoy of 10.

Definitely original. The few I-395 MD shields around are from its original completion in 1982. The Clearview guide signs however, are the third versions used for the route. Signs were still vastly button copy in 1993, but replaced by the mid-1990s.

I filled in a few more blanks. I'm thinking by process of elimination, we could ID the rest.

I've gone and edited the caption in the post that has the photo itself, and will do so whenever someone fills in another blank.

Thanks.  I think Brian Polidoro was there, and if so was most likely where I've moved him above (from where you are, which is where I had him), but I could be wrong on both counts.

Polidoro already posted on MTR that he didn't make it. But I do know both Ian Ligget's and Scott Davis's fathers are in the pic, but I won't be so bold as to say which is which.

D'oh! I think the next time I host a meet, I'll be sure to provide a sign-in sheet (especially if it approaches 30).

Correct, my father was one of the guys taking the group pic.

PS: sorry if my dad's truck blocked any road photos taken between stops

I suppose the million dollar question for those of us not at the meet is:

Alps, why is there a frog on you head?

:-P

Tradition (if you could call it that) dictates that if Mr. Prince is not present, then the frog goes on top of the meet host...

So, who is the keeper of the frog? I presume Adam is, but does he ship it to the meet host if he isn't going to be there?

Or is it a different frog?

And does the fact that a frog is seemingly the official mascot of road meets have anything to do with your nickname?

I have never heard the story of or the background of the frog. Always meant to ask but never did. This seems to be as good a time as any.

You should know the answer to that, since you were at the meet which I hosted. :p

And I have an answer, I think, Dave Souza (His name was Dave, and it sounds like the same last name pronounced)

I've added that name to the caption with a question mark.  I did some quick Net searches (including for attendees of previous road meets) and couldn't get a match for that name.

I'll this weekend try to get a captioned photo added to the "official" meet page, http://www.gribblenation.net/meetings/bmore.html

Yes, that's a Dave. It was his first road meet, and he's from the Washington, DC suburbs in Maryland.
Edited to fix quoting - but we already established it's a Dave...

I too am unfamiliar with the story of the frog being the official mascot of roads meets. Is Dan G. aware of this? We've got a meet coming up this Saturday in Canton/Akron, Ohio!

Heh, I think this has run its course now...

I'm the "keeper of the frog".  The frog has no bearing on meets that I do not attend.

(and no, I'm not going to Ohio this weekend)
