Is that Kid of Kid and Sue, or someone else entirely?

Yes, you betcha I remember those commercials!  I have a sort-of encyclopedic memory of 70's commercials.  I attempted to start a blog once (http://70scommercials.blogspot.com/), but never got more than 3 entries.

The commercials were a series of crude (postmodern?) thick white line-drawings on a black background.  A box of Cheerios would periodically yodel "cheerio-io", startling a boy who tries to find the source.  But the box was typically hidden under something.  When the boy did find the source, it would reveal a (photo-realistic IIRC) Cheerios box along with a "complete breakfast", at which point he might say "mmmm!"  There was a male voice-over through some of the ad, along with light background music at certain points.  The ad would end with the voiceover saying that if you wanted Cheerios, just "cheeriodle", with the boy himself trying the "cheerio-io" call.  The box would then appear to the boy, and at least once kissed him!

When Sue got in trouble, it's Kid who eat Cheerios to save her just like Popeye saved often Olive Oyl like in this one.

Then in the 1980s, Sue can also kick as well.

And before Kid and Sue, it was Bullwinkle who did the promotion of Cheerios.
