Because the sun is directly overhead, making the underside dark (if it was at an angle, the sun would shine underneath).
It's not, in fact it would be in the running for most generic looking bridge ever.

Anyways, yeah sounds like you need to get away from all this freeway and limited access jazz if you think that bridge is scary. It's kind of hard to not roll my eyes when I know stuff like this is normal in my part of the world:
https://flic.kr/p/2he68hy

The blackness of the shadow.
I didn't see any trolls hiding under the bridge, so nope, not scary.
That bridge isn't scary.
Though without piers, the bridge is not without peers in NC (ran across this one yesterday)...

I-70 in the Rockies is about as steep. This just looks scary because it stands out so much more than a road in a mountain pass does. Looking at it from the side (https://goo.gl/maps/DaqiKQ5476sqJbnd7), it is completely normal.

That's both the Orange Line L and the western end of the Ashland yard of the Norfolk Southern–the latter being a primary NS interchange yard for the BNSF and UP. Something tells me the bridges are doing just fine.

That US 45 bridge is definitely scary...
Scariest ones I ever drove were the original 1929 Cooper River Bridge in Charleston SC. Here is a 1953 photo that shows how steep it was at each end (also had a dip between spans - the bridge was 2 miles long) and how even trucks then took up the entire space. Thankfully it was one-way and trucks were banned by the time I remember crossing it.

The other one is the original Albemarle Sound bridge on NC 32 which was replaced in the mid-2000s. Very narrow and a popular route for semis. I cannot find a photo of this bridge.

The actual Scary Bridge was on the Eel River at the future site of Avenue of the Giants:
The way you capitalized Scary, I just had to chime in. There's the Scary Bridge over Scary Creek on WV-817 just a mile south of the interchange with I-64. Before I-64 came through, there used to be a Little Scary Bridge over Little Scary Creek right next to the interchange, but this was replaced with a large culvert during the Interstate construction. According to county maps from the 1950s, Scary used to be an incorporated town (one of three little incorporated towns adjacent to Exit 44 and Exit 39 that seemingly disappeared about the time of Interstate construction, but I'm skeptical).
Scary Bridge is not worth paying attention to, except for the submerged stone arch culvert for the former Chesapeake & Ohio Railway just upstream. All of this is along the Kanawha River. Before the completion of the Winfield Locks bypass in the late 1990s, the mean water level on the Kanawha was quite a bit lower and the stone arch was only partially submerged. Scary Bridge is also home of the historical marker for the Battle of Scary. Locals call this area "The Foot of Scary Hill".

I have absolutely had that experience on I-95 in Maryland on more than one occasion, especially the segment between Baltimore and Delaware. I'm not sure why people in Maryland are so scared of the right lane.
The right lane is the secret weapon on the JFK segment of I-95 :-D
Pre-COVID I used to always notice that whenever there were weekend slowdowns on that piece of I-95, that the right lane inched along quicker (relatively speaking, anyway) than the other 2 lanes. I've never understood why everyone insists on cruising in the middle (and sometimes left ) lane - maybe something to do with the Tydings Bridge? (Which, yes, is only one mile out of a ~50 mile stretch, but who knows :banghead:)
I think there are a fair number of people who don't like driving that bridge (I am not one of them) because of the lack of shoulders & drop-off to the Susquehanna below. The only time I didn't particularly enjoy crossing was during a day with nasty crosswinds - had to death-grip the wheel!
FWIW, MDTA's long-term plan is to widen I-95 from 6 to 8 lanes to Delaware, which would obviously have to include a Tydings Bridge replacement (or twinning...).

How about the extension of the express lanes?

Construction is beginning to extend them northbound-only (for now) to exit 77 - IIRC, once fully built out the farthest those would go is exit 80 or exit 85.

Read the inspection report on Deihl Road over the PA Turnpike and see why this Rigid Concrete bridge looks scary.
Did something on the 7th Street Bridge in Modesto on Gribblenation awhile back. The 7th Street Bridge is presently being braced up and has a really low weight limit:
https://www.gribblenation.org/2020/11/former-us-route-99-in-modesto-and-7th.html?m=1
Any report on the bridge and any close look at the substructure reveals why the 7th Street Bridge needs to be replaced.
It killed Threevix.

In Texas that would have a clearance sign. Then again, there would also be one where the ramp goes over 70 Bypass.
Sherman Minton Bridge sucks. I don't like elevated bridges. I'm sure it lights up but it's VERY boring to drive on when you are on the lower level. And it looks scary cause I feel like the top deck will collapse! :-o

South Carolina has them too.

I've crossed that bridge at least 16 times by now. Is 800 meters of boredom on the lower deck of a bridge too much for you to handle?
Fortunately, there is an alternative. You can cross over the Ohio River on the I-265 bridge in the area for a low price of $2.10, only $2.10 more than the $0.00 on the I-64 bridge !

Yes, I would go with I-65!
It doesn't to me. In fact I love the landscaping.

This is to OP on US 421.

I think the point is some people don't like the fact that the bridge design doesn't use center supports. The single span is longer than the length of the individual spans if it had used a center support. The spans are up to 100' feet but that is far less than the length of plenty of other spans in deck bridges.
Actually it is a safer design, because the biggest reason deck bridges fail in the US is because traffic (most often TT-Combos) strike the center support (that you so badly miss) and knock one or both sides of the bridge down.

it looks .. austere no thats not the right word... but neither is scary. imposing? severe? out of place?
it, to me is odd,though.
The wide shoulder caught my attention. This overpass was built to accommodate future road expansion. That's a good thing.
No bridge is as scary as the original Galloping Gertie.
Spoiler: It didn't make it to its first birthday.

Modern bridges (not all) are designed like that.
Now if it was concrete beams, then it would be MORE scary!

I guess it depends on the length too
This bridge looks scary to me. It was built in an awkward position.

Though without piers, the bridge is not without peers in NC (ran across this one yesterday)...

A better question is, why does it look like NCDOT wants to reuse the old road as southbound lanes, when it looks like the existing bridge is just barely capable of handling two more lanes.

As for scary bridges, I thought that link was going to lead to something like the Delaware Memorial Bridge or Chesapeake Bay Bridge (US 50-301), or something like that.

Confused by this question...putting the old road back into service as the SB lanes would require a new bridge and interchange entirely unless there were going to be tight S curves on both sides of NC 87 bypass.
How about this bridge? Sure looks like to me that a semi would ram the bottom of either bridge.
