NC 140 has been officially assigned to the built and unbuilt portions of all of I-140 plus the US 17 freeway east of I-40:

https://connect.ncdot.gov/resources/safety/Route%20Changes/2015_01_14.pdf

Notable within this is the fact that I-140 will be requested by NCDOT for the ENTIRE freeway at some point.  It also describes US 17's presence on this freeway as UNOFFICIAL.

Curious if they will post NC 140 shields alongside existing I-140 postings...

The US 17 is unofficial on the National Truck Network, not on the bypass.

I would imagine NCDOT will sign it all.

So, I'm just curious, but has anybody been able to check to see if they have posted NC-140 shields along the I-140 segment yet?

Hopefully, this will not be the case. The designation of NC 140 over the entire Bypass is, hopefully, just a bureaucratic exercise to make it officially one continuous route instead of two distinctly separated sections. And, as stated, this is a temporary designation until the entire Bypass is designated as I-140. Hopefully, that happens before the last section under construction is completed, and there will be no need for additional NC 140 signs.

Hope so.  Anyways, if it was posted, I did want to update OSM with that info.

I assume when it's completed it will be resigned Interstate 140.

Of course on the Southern segment (which is posted as NC-140).  I wanted to know if they had added the shields to the already posted I-140 segment.

I doubt they have yet.  But if they got AASHTO approval to move US 17 back through Wilmington, then I'm sure when they do the sign changes that NC 140 will appear then.

Here's an article I found from last year detailing the rational for the NCDOT proposal to put US 17 back onto the streets of Wilmington (necessitating the extension of the NC 140 designation):

So the rules are broken once again. First they reroute US 117 to make room for I-795, and now this...I wonder what they'll think of next.
Go Cubs Go! Go Cubs Go! Hey Chicago, what do you say? The Cubs are gonna win today!

Strider

They probably have broken another rule by rerouting US 220 back to its original routing between Candor and Ellerbe to make a room for I-73/I-74.

AASHTO Approves.

NCDOT actually never got around to applying for the move of US 220 to the freeway in the first place, I think they saw it as a temporary designation until the freeway was made part of the interstate system. So the reroute was back to what AASHTO considered its true alignment.

Thread revival! Last I-140 thread was over 2 years ago.

Does anyone know when I-140 is opening today?
Apparently I’m a fan of I-69.  Who knew.

Roadsguy

Will the entire road be designated I-140 or just NC 140?
Mileage-based exit numbering implies the existence of mileage-cringe exit numbering.

West of I-40, I-140. East of I-40, US 17.

But US 17 was rerouted off 140 and back through Wilmington. Is the eastern leg signed as anything right now?

You could have just posted again in that thread.  That way, people would have the background in one thread instead of having to find it again.

As far as I know, NCDOT has not removed the US 17 signs along the Bypass. Hopefully, they were waiting for this last segment to open to revise the signage. If so, NCDOT has the entire bypass designated as NC 140, so they would probably sign that to the east of I-40 until they get approval to put interstate shields up (they could conceivably recycle the NC 140 shields taken down from the southern end).

NCDOT press release on this morning's ribbon-cutting. Says they 'hope' to get the road open by the end of the month:

I have read that an 8-mile toll road is proposed to connect US 17 with US 421 in the Wilmington area. How likely is this proposal to be constructed?

Mapmikey

Only the Planning and Environmental Studies have been funded in the current STIP.  Record of decision expected summer 2019.

Here's a link to the May 17 approved route change ordinance for US 17 (on pages 15-16):
https://connect.ncdot.gov/resources/safety/Route%20Changes/2017_05_17.pdf

As it states, NC 140 is currently the only official route on the Bypass east of I-40.

Agreed.  And if necessary, PM an admin if a thread re-title would be necessary or appropriate.

NCDOT opened the new stretch of I-140 from US 421 to US 74/76 this afternoon. The westbound lanes were opened first with the eastbound later. This web article includes a video of the westbound drive, they were still putting up signage eastbound when it was taken. It shows some exit signage still needs to be put up for Exit 10 but that the road is signed as I-140 without, properly, any US 17 shields (and with a 70 MPH speed limit):
