Will there be any more Mods/Admins on this forum?
-
Will they be time travelers? I expect mods from the future, I want to know what 2121 is like.

kphoger, froggie, you?
I'm just throwing out suggestions.

kphuck no.

No. Only Zuul.

Alright. Question has been answered.

The Grand Alan is now and forevermore high admin and lord over us all.
-
Eventually, there might have to. There are already some mod and admins that are barely active on the forum (one of the regional mods did not post between 2017 and 2021).

Yes. Even the forum owner isn't super active, but he might just be busy with life so I wouldn't look into it.

I for one welcome Zuul as our new Regional Moderator. Hopefully this doesn’t mean Vinz Clortho also gets to be a moderator also, he seems too clumsy for the job. Plus that whole Gatekeeper and Key Master thing might have bad results if FritzOwl gets to chose the form of The Destructor.

Your future overlords have arrived.
-
If we're going to have mods, we need rockers to be fair to all.
(I know tolbs17 likely won’t understand that reference....)

This is a fortunate result, but there is one shortcoming with the current system, which is recruitment. If I want to give back to the community, how do I serve? Who do I approach? If moderators were elected, then the obvious way of doing this would be to run for election, as I did years ago in SABRE without having previously been a co-opted member of SABRE Committee or otherwise part of the power structure.
This is a decent point, as there is really no real "list of possible moderators" that we consult when a position is active. Zeffy became a moderator after working with Alex to improve the site. I became a moderator in the wake of V'Ger's messy exodus from the forum; I had heard that Alex was considering declaring the forum to be a failure and not restoring it, so I reached out to him to ask if there was anything I could do to help get it back up.
The more typical moderator career path starts with regional moderator; when it's decided a board needs a regional moderator, we look at the candidates with a history of good conduct that are active in the regional board in question. Should they do well in that position they are 'promoted' to a general moderator whenever there is a vacancy.
If one were to wish to become a moderator, I would suggest looking to see if there is a regional moderator position open in the area you frequent, and if not, PM a moderator asking about filling it. More established users with years of posting history might be able to directly apply for a global moderator position, but we aren't always looking for new ones. We seldom reach a decision on who should be an admin ahead of time before contacting them, because there is always the risk of the decided-upon user not having the time or desire to moderate.

I guess for the southeast board, Mapmikey maybe?

Wow, that entire thread was really interesting. I can't believe I've been here as long as I have without reading it or even knowing it existed.
-

Aren’t you also making an unwarranted assumption that he might want to be a moderator? (To be clear, I have no idea whether he does or does not.) I would decline if I were asked to be a moderator.

Just throwing suggestions. Not everyone has interest (including myself) in wanting to become a moderator.

We don't really need any suggestions–I don't believe that we have any need to add any mods at the present time, and by the time we do circumstances may have changed where any nominated users may no longer be suitable for the role (due to inactivity, and incident that may have happened by that time, etc.) Actively nominating users could place an unwanted spotlight on them, should they not be interested in the role, or feel like there is a need to begin campaigning for it. Likewise, it puts us in the awkward spot of having to reject users (which carries the risk of starting bad blood) simply because we don't really have a need to add anyone, even if an ideal candidate were presented to us.

So, you are saying we are good with what we have now. We used to have 3 more global mods (Zeffy, US71, and deathtopumpkins). But I think they wanted to be demoted.

US71 was demoted for copying Trump's campaign announcement statement in 2015 in the context of Asian Americans.

imagine if we had FritzOwl be regional mod for the fictional highways section :bigass:

Yes. Also that stating specific users that you think should be mods is socially awkward for us to have to deal with, so I, at least, would prefer that you didn't do that.

Cause they seem to be talking in a MOD way.

Um...thanks?
I’ve managed to go 32 years in my professional career without being anyone’s supervisor and that same desire would apply to moderating forum rooms.
I’d much rather spend the time and energy I have on the forum making roadgeek discoveries, solving roadgeek mysteries and passing along roadgeek knowledge/experience.

TheAlan360 should be promoted to
Alanland Regional Moderator Global Moderator. Case closed.
-
I have volunteered numerous times to be a moderator. However, I know the changes of that happening are practically nonexistent, because my moderation style would be a lot less heavy-handed than many (most) of the others, and also because I have a much different life philosophy than those I consider to be the most active mods.
The Ohio Valley board (my home board) doesn't have a regional moderator.
-
Develop some depth by having more Mods. The current group of Mods already know who is active and a member in good standing. Take Max for instance. He is a MVP-grade poster who would be perfect for the California section. There are bound to be a few others.
Do I wish to Mod? Not really.
Am I happy with the Mods we have? Yes.
Is AA Road Forums a good place to be? You betcha!

While I appreciate the sentiment all the same I’m probably not what you’re looking for out of a moderator. I have a tendency to get way too snarky and annoyed at stuff people post. Someone who moderates shouldn’t really ought to be far neutral and less opinionated than someone like me. Besides Roadfro does a good job at what I just described already on Pacific Southwest.

If you ask one or two contributors to this thread, I'm the least neutral person out there. ;)

I would be fine being a mod if I needed to be one, but I doubt anyone would consider me for oh so many reasons.

Why? The global mods and admins keep watch over them, and I'm just as likely to moderate a thread as whoever the regional mod is for whatever section. The only difference is a regional mod may be more inclined to read their section first, as opposed to someone like me who checks General Highway Talk→Off Topic→Central States→whatever else catches my fancy...

Asymmetry is the spice of life.

I'll let RGT answer for himself, but I also find it a bit strange - or maybe inconsistent is a better word - that some boards have regional mods and some don't.
If every board doesn't need one, then why does any board need one? (Unless it was based on a threshold for user traffic/posts in that board, but that doesn't seem to be the case either.)
-
Well, like, look at Travel. I woke up today and checked it and there were three threads in there with new posts. Do we need to go through the trouble of vetting someone to look at three threads? No. So we haven't ever had a regional mod for Travel. Same goes for Mass Transit; there's just not enough activity there to make it worth having a moderator over.
The only actual regional board that doesn't have a mod assigned (whether active or not) is Ohio Valley, and we just straight up don't need to moderate Ohio Valley often enough to make an effort to find a mod for it.

I would say that the only boards that DO need moderation are General and Off-Topic. The regional boards sort of govern themselves, and the rest are small.

OK, yeah. I wasn't thinking so much of the smaller boards like Travel and Mass Transit.
For some reason, I thought there were more regional boards that didn't have moderators.

Fictional Highways occasionally needs some moderating. Urban Planning and Mass Transit have gotten heated as well...

It happens infrequently enough that one of the global moderators or admins can handle it.

That’s only because a certain someone got chased out of the regional boards by users that didn’t care for their attitude on display. All the same, “heated” doesn’t necessarily require moderation.

We still have the global mods and admins for moderation in the non-regional boards as well.
Though for regional mods, is there a requirement that they need to live in the region they’re moderating? Like I know for Midwest-Great Lakes (my home region), rawrmustard lives in Michigan, which is part of it. Same with roadfro for Southwest and Bickendan for the PNW.

Living outside the region is called carpetbagging, and at least in real life, it's allowed but discouraged.

Isn't that people who move to other regions?

The status quo is fine. No need for any changes.

I don't understand the obsession some posters have with this topic. Didn't we just have this thread like a month or two ago?

I will note that the intent is for every board to have its own moderator. So if someone expresses interest, we do evaluate it.

I would theoretically have some knowledge about that region, except that I don't. KY and WV's roads don't really interest me that much for some reason compared to other border states of Ohio like MI and IN.

Can I be moderator of the muffin baking board? Here's my resume:
- I've baked my own blueberry muffins at least twice.
- I can only access the computer at the public library, which my uncle only lets me go to on Wednesdays.
- One time I stayed at a hotel that had cable and I watched a marathon of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.
Let me know when I can start - I really don't think you're going to find a more qualified candidate. Thanks.

No, it was an old road forum. Many current AAroaders posted on that forum. It became obsolete when AAroads was created in 2009.

The question has been answered–yes, we will probably add more admins at some point, but we have no need to do so at this time. The question of how moderators are chosen was also answered. It was asked that you refrain from nominating people for the nonexistent moderator positions that we aren't filling at this time. This request wasn't followed.
