Ordering dead-tree copies of State DOT highway maps

There were some old threads on this topic here, here and here but none has been posted to in years and I didn't want to necro anything that old.

I fear paper maps are disappearing forever and, being old enough to remember when these were all we had and still liking a piece of paper to look at when I'm in an unfamiliar area, instead of using the smart phone, I'd like to get the current or most recent copies of each state's "Official Highway Map" (or similar name) as produced by the DOT.  Most states still offer free copies by online order.  Often the DOT routes you to the Department of Tourism to place the order, and you get the map along with their glossy "State Vacation Guide".

In most cases a PDF of the map is available for download, but I like the copies on quality paper.

I have ordered and received some of these, some are on order but not received and others not yet ordered.  I have links to either the DOT or Department of Tourism for 42 of the 50 states; on each linked page there's either the order form itself or some obvious link which will get you to ordering instructions.

If anyone has links for Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island or Wyoming, I'll add them in.  Washington has specifically discontinued paper copies (Link).

The cartography on this one is fine, but demerits to South Dakota for producing a 6" x 9" (as folded) map, which requires an extra fold to lay in my shallow map drawer.  Everybody else's map (so far) is the standard 4" or 4-1/2" wide, folded.

Vermont:

The map I received via this request is dated 5/2017 and it appears to be privately produced under contract with the Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing.  The cartography quality is comparable to a typical DOT map.

Virginia:

Washington:
Discontinued as noted above

West Virginia:

(It's the "Tourist Map")

Wisconsin:

Wyoming:
---
I ordered and received the Wyoming map in 2017 (and it's dated 2017).  I searched all over for the ordering link but couldn't find it, so maybe they stopped mailing them.  The Travel Wyoming website has a PDF of the 2011 map for download, but their offer to mail their vacation guide does not promise a map.

Thanks for any help on completing the list.

Hawaii has no official DOT highway map, either paper or online, and hasn't had one for many years. If you scrounge around, you can find low-res and incomplete/outdated jpgs here and there on the DOT site for some of the major islands. The best you can do for paper maps is do a search on Amazon, etc. for the University of Hawaii's excellent paper maps (Reference Maps of the Islands of Hawai'i, by UH cartographer James A. Bier, with each island's map entitled "Map of ____"). There are separate maps for each of the state's major islands, except Lanai and Molokai are covered by one map, and there are no maps for visitor-unfriendly Kahoolawe and Niihau which don't have any state or county highways anyway. You'd need to get five maps to cover all the islands with state highways, at about $4-5 each.

While Alaska may still have a paper official highway map, I can't find a link for ordering one like there used to be on the DOT site. The map got updated in the past few years to remove the governor's face (last one with a face was for Gov. Sean Parnell, who was defeated for re-election, and his successor chose not to sub in his own face), and I picked one up at visitor information in Petersburg when I was there in 2016. But the printing of new maps and/or mailing them to tourists might've been discontinued due to fiscal hard times for the state government.

Just some notes if you want to expand this to Canadian provinces and territories:

-- Many of them charge you for their official maps, up to C$5.54 (including sales tax, to rub salt in the wound) for British Columbia.

-- I've been able to get Tourism Saskatchewan to mail me that province's map, shrink-wrapped together with a tourism guide. I think Nunavut Territory will mail you its map at no charge (also together with other tourism info), though since there are no highways in Nunavut, and no insets for local street networks, the only roads shown on that map are in neighbouring provinces and territories.

Alaska allowed you to order a map during the Palin administration. I did so, but never received a map.

I purchased a 2007-2008 edition of the Washington state map on ebay. Lucky to have one considering they discontinued printing maps. I have one from every state except California as Hawaii dosen't count becasue they never had one. Although not every one is the most recent edition.

To my knowledge, you cannot order the New Hampshire map online....if you want one, you have to go to a Rest Area in the state in person.

paulthemapguy

I made this thread trying to track down all the states that give away free maps at their rest areas or visitor centers.  So if you can't get one by mail, this is always an option, at least...

I have a collection of all of the official highways maps for all of the states, and all Canadian provinces and territories except Nunavut. One of my hobbies is to keep them updated. Most of them are from the last few years, but a few of the harder to get (or no longer available) ones are from before 2000. I'm going to use the contact information in this thread to try to update my older maps for CT, MA and NM.

Hawaii once upon a time put out a map. I have one in my collection that is copyrighted 1988. It is labeled "Official Transportation Map State of Hawaii", and was published by the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation.

My collection also includes the following maps that were once available:

  • An official Washington, D.C. map. It was put out in 1980 by the District of Columbia Department of Transportation. It includes a welcome message by the infamous mayor Marion Barry, Jr. It is a detailed city street map that extends out to beyond the Beltway, and rivals commercial maps in quality.
  • An "Official Transportation Map" of Puerto Rico, copyrighted 1980. The maps themselves were made by H.M. Gousha, including street-level maps of the major cities. But it is otherwise equivalent to official state highway maps, complete with a picture and welcome message (in Spanish) of then-Governor Carlos Romero Barcelo.

Kentucky's new map is out. For the first time I can recall, it's a biennial issue, good for 2018-2019. No new Kentucky maps for two years.

I got something like 75% of the maps I requested via the links above.  Many states got the map to me within a week to ten days, a few took maybe three or four weeks, and some never did respond.  I should have kept better track but I believe Georgia, Kansas and North Dakota were among the nonresponders.  I'll go through my inventory and take one more shot at getting the ones I don't have.

Recently dumped a lot of state maps that I had collected during cross-country trips during the mid nineties to mid 00's.   They went to a community bookstore - COAS in las Cruces.  Probably should have offered them up for sale here.
Do still have the following:
1956 Humble Texas State map (Exxon predecessor?) VG condition, no evidence of impending Interstate legislation, i.e. no Interstate routes marked
1960 Official New Mexico state map - Good condition
1970 Enco Arizona/New Mexico map VG
1971 Chevron/Standard Arizona state map VG - shows the I-10 straightaway west of Phoenix under construction
1978 Diamond Shamrock United States Map and Highway Directory - shows near complete Interstate system as of late seventies
1980 Phillips 66 Kansas/Nebraska state maps - cover art shows Phillips 66 tires, battery, and Trop Artic oil can (pre plastic bottles) along with a Phillips 66 station manager

Was in the community bookstore (COAS) this past Saturday - looking for geotechnical textbooks for new job in Tucson.  A lot of the maps I had donated were there for sale.  $1.00 each.

I'm also bummed that paper turnpike maps are disappearing.  The Ohio Turnpike still produces one but it's covered with advertisements.  The Pennsylvania Turnpike and New York Thruway apparently don't produce paper maps anymore.

You used to be able to score all of the New England official state maps at the Big E (Eastern States Exhibition.) It's in late September in West Springfield, Mass. I'm not sure if that is still the case, but about 10 years ago I went and grabbed some at all of the state houses there.
