Chicago Expressway Shootings

It seems lately that every few nights someone gets shot on an expressway in or around Chicago. Here are some examples of this:

NBC Chicago: Pregnant Mother of Five Killed in Shooting on Dan Ryan Expressway

CBS Chicago: Boy, 16, Wounded in Shooting on Kennedy Expressway Ramp

WGN-TV: Tow Truck Shot at on Dan Ryan Expressway

CLTV: Kennedy Shooting is 26th Expressway Shooting This Year

I've been thinking that this only happens in Chicagoland and other large cities, but I may be wrong. Feel free to share your thoughts.

They're getting shot (or killed via other means, beating, knife) in the neighborhoods as well.  It is suspected that much of this may be the gang fights spilling onto the expressways.

Then again, shootings can happen in rural areas as well.

I haven't really heard of it outside of this post, though I might suspect it occurs in the metropolis. Nothing really like that happens here, and I-84 around here is very peaceful. Some days, there's not even traffic, even during rush hours.

There was a rash of sniper shootings on I-65 back in 2006 in rural northwest Indiana. While Chicago's is most likely gang-related, these could occur anywhere

I had heard about police activity on the radio there. My stand corrected.

and not too long ago we had a thread about shooting on the Chicago freeways.


I live close to a freeway.  1 hour and 45 minutes ago, I heard 6 clear gunshots ring out.  Then 10 minutes later, I heard 5 more.  These were not backfires - they were gunshots, with brief pauses in between.  They were outside my immediate neighborhood, somewhat west and south.  There is the D/S & M/M by the freeway, but that is probably too far.  So I wonder if some fool was shooting at cars, or if someone was shot to death or what.  It's after dark, too late for any work sound like construction as a mimic, or for target practice.  Where the shots came from there really are no houses or anything.  No sirens either, so it was very weird.

It makes sense that if you're shooting at people, you'll go where the people are -- and freeways in large cities are good examples. I doubt ON 401, the M25, the PIE, etc. see similar trends; shooting is definitely an American thing.
