Sioux Falls interchange upgrades

I  made a map of the potential interchange upgrades in Sioux Falls within the next decade or so.

Color coded (more info) -> https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1kvXkw-krM_woFQ6CkSulRgusPYzAQefz&usp=sharing

Black (meant to show what the freeway system [excluding SD-100] will look like after the next decade) -> https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1pZ-1TrQEYV9tIn0JY0Nag9BAb9EXE6zD&usp=sharing

THESE EXCLUDE FUTURE SD-100's PLANNED SPUI.

I-29

85th Street Interchange - New DDI tied into the I-229 interchange using braided ramps, expected to begin construction in 2021 (yeah right)

41st Street Interchange - Diamond -> DDI, expected to begin construction in 2023

I-229

Benson Road Interchange - Diamond -> DDI, expected to begin construction in 2023, according to the http://www.bensonroadproject.com/ website

Cliff Avenue Interchange - Modified Diamond -> Modified SPUI (modified cuz the SB off-ramp is set apart from the SB on-ramp and it intersects E 41st St rather than the SB on-ramp)

Minnesota Avenue Interchange - Diamond -> Single-loop Parclo

AND LASTLY...

The I-29/I-90 Interchange, to be upgraded from a full cloverleaf to a cloverstack (loop ramps on the NB-WB and SB-EB movements + directional flyovers on the WB-SB and EB-NB movements). The real movement here in need of the upgrade is the WB-SB movement, since it has the highest usage, but the main purpose of the interchange upgrade in general is to remove the weaving that we all know is a drawback with cloverleaves. According to a 2006 interchange justification study in this area, the interchange will need c/d roads to seperate the weaving from the mainline by 2025. Since that's not happening, they're just going to make it a cloverstack. The interchange is not expected to be reconstructed until after 2025, and it is not included in the 2000-2025 Long Range Transportation Plan for the Sioux Falls Regional MPO, but it is in SDDOT's long range plan. Link to the study: https://dot.sd.gov/media/documents/I90_I29_IJR_FINAL_31March2006.pdf

I'm really excited about this one, since it will put Sioux Falls' center interchange (what I call the biggest freeway-freeway interchange in a city) up ahead of Fargo's again (HA). Lol I don't have much against Fargo

You added a SPUI at I-90/Timberline but I didn't see it on your list. I can't see a need for it unless Powder House Road is extended across the railroad and river. Is that planned?

The SPUI at I-90/Timberline is already finished. That's why I just treated it as if it existed before I made the map (which it did). Powder House Road is being extended across the river/railroad as we speak. Google maps just doesn't show it yet. I know because just a couple weeks ago I went down there and the SPUI was finished and not even blocked off because you can go north on it but south is blocked off since they're building the bridge for the river. (and not to mention the fact that the SDDOT website says so)

Sioux Falls is already pretty prolific when it comes to SPUIs/modern interchanges (especially for a 200k metro area) but more is always nice. A quote from this thread:

SDDOT loves SPUIs. Look at I-29 through north Sioux Falls. That area was rebuilt in the early 2000s. There's 3 of them at Benson Road, Madison Street, and 12th Street.

Technically, it's not Powder House Road anymore, it's Veteran's Parkway. I've always been kinda bitter about that, because the Powder House explosion has some history behind it.
There was a guy on the SF City Council and he wanted a road named after veterans because of his kid. Unpopular opinion, but screw off with that stuff.
The Sioux Falls Historical Society was up in arms about it, because the Powder House explosion was a huge thing in Sioux Falls back in that time.
They talked about renaming Russell Street to Veteran's whatever, and that would've created a huge mess with the hotels and everything along that route.

Looking on Streetview, you can tell the city of Sioux Falls had a say on that SPUI. That stupid cantilever roadway lighting, kind of Texas and Iowa style, which I hate. That's not the SDDOT standard. I'm a huge aesthetics guy when it comes to roads.

Which SPUI are you referring to in the last bit?
And yeah, I'm not a huge fan of Veterans' Parkways simply because they are so ubiquitous now.

It's the I-90/Future SD 100/Timberline Ave interchange.

JREwing78

Any plans for an upgrade of the interchange at I-90 and SD 11 in Brandon? That one was a real bear to exit at when I came through last year. I probably sat for a solid 3 minutes waiting for an opening in traffic to turn onto SD 11.

Luverne is a control city? I would have thought either Worthington or Albert Lea

SDDOT doesn't do that. They'll sign whatever the next "biggest town" is. On I-29 in northeastern SD, you'll see New Effington, which has a population of under 300. I hate it so much.

That's in Sioux Falls at I-29 & 12th Street.

New Effington? They really, really don't want to acknowledge Fargo's existence, do they?

It's not that. Mileage sigange along I-29 and I-90 always follow the rule when it comes to control cities. It's probably something that someone at SDDOT way back when the Interstates were constructed decided, to not use control cities at interchanges, and was never changed.

Here's the New Effington example at SD 10 & I-29: https://goo.gl/maps/XQMbtA8eEVFjJAPP8

My thinking, is that the reason for New Effington on the sign is because it was on the old US 81 route in that area.

There's also a sign in Watertown along US 81: https://goo.gl/maps/5Hp17P8ek7Qfowyk9
When SDDOT reconstructed that road (the Streetview was pre-construction), the sign was never updated. Rauville doesn't exist anymore and US 81 followed a county road straight north to US 12. The blurred shield is US 12.

I've emailed nit-picky signage issues to SDDOT, and if the regional engineer doesn't give a crap, the change won't happen. SDDOT isn't consistent on signage at all and it drives me up a wall.

GMoney0805

Rauville is very small but of extremely minor significance. Yeah, on I-29 northbound Summit is another control city. Population around 300
