This past October I drove CA 74 on the Pines to Palms Highway east from CA 371 into Palm Desert.  CA 74 is a surprisingly undervalued scenic highway; especially when it comes to the Pines to Palms Highway.  The Pines to Palms Highway was built by Riverside County and the National Forest Service in a joint project which opened in June 1932 and became part of Legislative Route 64 in 1933.   LRN 64 was extended all the way to US 101/LRN 2 in 1933 which became the route of CA 74 on the Ortega Highway and a segment of CA 740 on the Pines to Palms Highway.  CA 740 is interesting because it was routed from Riverside via LRN 78 to Perris and east on LRN 64 to Coachella Valley on the Pines to Palms Highway.  CA 740 between Riverside and Perris was part of the 1935 extension of US 395.  CA 740 on the Pines to Palms Highway remained through 1935 and doesn't appear on Division of Highways Maps as CA 74 until 1938.  I did have to dodge the closures on CA 74 east of Hemet from February and instead took CA 371 to reach the Pines to Palms Highway.
