Only 4 years!?  I've lived in upstate NY all my life and I'm still only 60% of the way there!

It's a completely different animal when you move somewhere as an adult and start intentionally clinching roads. Mike finished his clinch of Maryland roads at age 39, but his effort was intentional only a fraction of that time.

For instance, unless your parents are road geeks or do a lot of intrastate travel, it's really difficult to clinch a lot of routes as a kid.

I agree with Laura about having little luck clinching roads as a kid. I actually have a fairly good bit of roads clinched (you can see the link to my clinched roads in my signature box), but if not to visit family or for vacation, my parents hate driving (unlike their son  ). I think once I get my license in a little over a year (Im almost 15), I will be able to clinch so many more roads, when I have the time. There's a lot of non-limited access roads in my area I have not clinched, but I'll clinch a heckload of those when I start driving. At least until age 16, it's not easy to clinch a lot of roads as a child.

Having established yourself as a walking talking map, on vacation mis-direct parents onto other routes you've not done. Less likely to happen in the Sat Nav age.

I did it with Portsmouth, persuading them to take the A3 rather than M3-M27 route we took to the ferry. I even did it coming back from my grandparents after issues on the M25, staying off the motorway entirely after being warned off.

Yeah, I was fortunate to have parents who loved taking road trips.  Before age 16, I had been on trips from Indiana to California, Florida, Colorado, Arkansas, and Washington, DC.
Indiana: counties 100%, highways 100%
Illinois: counties 100%, highways 61%
Michigan: counties 100%, highways 56%
Wisconsin: counties 86%, highways 23%

Oh yes those were the days being called a walking road map.  Ah yes, memories.
Every day is a winding road, you just got to get used to it.

Hahaha I'm guilty of doing this, too! Let's go this way, I promise it should be  just as fast...and more scenic!

We took a fair number of road trips when I was a kid, with one big trip to Alabama and Florida when I was ten. That said, I didn't clinch all of Maryland's counties until I was 22. So while I covered a decent amount of territory as a kid, there was still stuff missed. I did a great amount of clinching when I was in college (18-22), but even then I was limited by money from going super flung out with the sole purpose of driving roads.

Wow, CHM went into its permanent hibernation and TM was born between the last two posts in this thread.  I'm sure many know, but for those who don't, you can see the travels of many AARoads users on TM:

And of course everyone's welcome to submit a file of your travels to see where you rank.

I-93 is the only 2di interstate I have clinched. (I am close on I-78) I have however clinched multiple 3di's. Fun fact: I clinched I-81 in Maryland sleeping. I was pretty upset when I woke up in WV.

Don't keep track of any other kinds of routes.

Recent one's in the state of Michigan:

M-199. Only 4 miles long so not a big one to clinch but I remember getting off I-94 and driving to the other end of it about 5 minutes later.

M-84. This is another easier one that I clinch every once in awhile. It's a major route between Saginaw and Bay City. About 15 miles long.

M-58. I could clinch this one in the next 20 minutes if I really wanted to. Just a major state highway in Saginaw between I-675 and M-47. Only 5 miles long.

M-47. Use to be a much longer highway but has been shortened to about 14 miles. I clinch this one once in awhile.

Now for some bigger highways.

M-46, M-13, M-54, M-83, M-81, M-15, M-24, M-138, M-142.

I clinched I-675 in Michigan for the record tonight.

For the "clinched in one sitting" file for me -- US 360. I drove it end-to-end from Danville to Reedsville last month.

Government would be tolerable if not for politicians and bureaucrats.

Flint1979

I clinched M-138 in Michigan last night in both directions without even trying. The highway is only 20 miles long but it seems somewhat longer for some reason. It use to be about 6 miles longer before M-24 was extended into the Caro area, M-138 use to end at M-25 in Unionville, that is now M-24's northern terminus. M-24's northern terminus use to be M-81 in Caro.

Passed the terminus, but didn't take it since wife was in car and we were more focused on counties and getting to Roseau.

I'm fairly certain that Monte has been on 172, but I don't believe he's using TravelMapping.
