The week before last, I took a 9-day trip through California, Oregon, and Washington. I began by going up US-395. I did several side trips, and skipped a couple of stretches that I had been on before, but I had never done more than a few miles of it in Oregon, and none of it north of I-90 in Washington. This trip, I took it all the way to Canada (and there's even a short Canadian route 395 on the other side of the border). Let me tell you, if you ever want to take a long car trip, it's hard to find a road that has more beauty and variety, and less ugliness and boredom, over 1300 miles, than US-395.

I also managed to clinch US-97, since I had already done everything south of I-90 years ago. Osoyoos, BC is pretty cool, too.

Finally, I managed to clinch US-101, filling in a few stretches near the coast in Washington that I had never done, along with the Willits Bypass (which opened one week after my last trip up there). So those were three satisfying clinches.

In addition, I spent a lot of time driving around NoCal, and clinched the following state highways: 53, 96, 116, 128, 152, 165, 222, and 281. I also clinched the following numbered county routes: A1, A2, A3, A14, A15, A19, A20, A21, A23, A24, A25, A26, A27, and C1. And also I-780. Fortunately, practically all of those roads were in very nice areas, so I saw a lot of nice scenery, and plenty of fall foliage. CA-96 took over three hours to drive, but one part was rather grim, since it burned not that long ago, and there were quite a few fireplaces and chimneys sticking up from slabs on the ground.

I added BL I-376 in PA Saturday, I-279 in Pittsburgh yesterday and I-680 through Youngstown today.

I would go ahead and count it if that happened to me–you clinched all of the route that existed at the time, and it's not like you would see anything new by going back.

I second that. For instance, I marked a section of IA-64 in Maquoketa as clinched despite the fact that several blocks were closed. I even drove through the dirt on several more just to get it closer. When a short stretch of road is closed, especially if I can see the whole section, I mark it as clinched.

Maybe I would count it if it were farther from my house, but I figure I'll be able to pick up that extra block sometime in the next few months. It's just a minor annoyance.

Well to make up for it, I finished clinching MN 29 today. I could have clinched it a year and a half ago, but of course road work (several miles, not just one block) prevented that, too.

I just returned from a Colorado to Ohio roadtrip. I took some extra time to ensure I got some clinches in there.

On the way there I clinched I-88 in Illinois.

While there I picked up an OH 516 clinch.

On the way back I took US 36 the entire way and now that clinch is finished. Before this trip, outside of Colorado I'd only been on the segments from OH 16 to OH 93 and from I-71 to the west OH 4 split in Ohio, and I'd previously picked up the Decatur, IL to St Joseph, MO stretch and the I-465 overlap at Indianapolis.

Don't tell Rothman!  (Personally I would probably count it as a "sight clinch".  Not too different than getting off and on at a diamond interchange on an Interstate highway for gas.)

The Travel Mapping site shows me with 320 100% clinched routes  (lots of short state routes in the area).  Rather than enumerate them all, I thought it might be fun to list my extremes (not counting spurs or bannered routes):

3di, Longest:     I-476 (132 miles)
2di, Shortest:     I-87(NC) (13 miles)
