US 89

Quote from: cabiness42 on September 06, 2021, 05:08:09 PM
For everybody who is struggling with this:

Start with 1.

Have you ever been on any highway numbered 1? Doesn't have to be US 1, doesn't have to be any specific state highway 1, just any highway numbered 1.
If no, then 1 is your answer.
If yes, move on to 2.

Have you ever been on any highway numbered 2? Doesn't have to be I-2 or US 2, just any highway numbered 2.
If no, then 2 is your answer.
If yes, then move on to 3.

Keep repeating until you finally answer no. That number is your answer.

This is a good way to put it.

For those of us who tend to think a bit more visually: I keep track of every instance of each route number I've been on in a spreadsheet. It looks something like this. So for example, for route 12s I have been on US 12, CA 12, GA 12, and UT 12:

Your answer for this thread is the first row in your version of this spreadsheet that has zero entries in it.

I'm doing something similar to what you did. I built a spreadsheet where the rows are highway numbers and the columns are highway systems. If the number doesn't exist in the state it gets colored black. If it exists and I have been on it, it gets colored green. If it exists and I haven't been on it yet, it gets colored red.

So far I have the numbers 1-99 and the seven systems I've been on the most. Adding more as time allows.
Indiana: counties 100%, highways 100%
Illinois: counties 100%, highways 61%
Michigan: counties 100%, highways 56%
Wisconsin: counties 86%, highways 23%

I'm a dingus with my 175 figure.  I was on IA-175 in September 2019.  My lowest number should actually be 207.  (If I just took ME-207 to cut south to Cape Elizabeth, Maine, instead of Pleasant Hill Road...my number would be 214...)
Avatar is the last interesting highway I clinched.

Maybe this thread should be titled "Lowest route number you haven't been on anywhere, ever" since so many people seem to participate before they understand what the thread is about.

If it were just interstates, unless you've been to Alaska, Hawai'i, or Puerto Rico, everyone's number would just be 1.  As posted in the "Your Route Log" thread, I have been on thirty #1's and only got an interstate numbered 1 (I-A1) this summer.

Louisiana just doesn't have any of the 200's. It goes up to 184, adds 191, then jumps to 300.

By short detours on my way to/from visiting friends at the Jersey Shore, I traveled significant parts of three 500-series signed New Jersey county routes. Those filled in gaps in my list of traveled routes, raising my lowest-numbered untraveled route to 556.

AFAIK, there are no route 556s in NJ, or anywhere else near me. After that, AFAIK I have gaps at 558-559, 563, 567, 572, and 584, before I can reach Mapmikey's turf on the multitude of 6xx signed state secondary routes in Virginia.

There's a 556 in Eastern Kentucky.

We're never going to Get Oscar if you keep helping him.

Claiming 479, 499, and 504 would give me a plateau of 500s, until hitting 545. But I'm just not near those specific missing numbers.

I'm trying to avoid the little half-mile numbered county roads but if Oscar gets to 600, then I'll have no choice but to deploy the Cullman County Nuclear Option.

Seriously, if anyone can get to routes number up to 1000, that's quite a remarkable achievement. Even getting to 250-300 is impressive and takes a little work.

If you drove MD 193 between MD 202 and MD 450 prior to 1985 you have driven MD 556.
