Any long route in Australia (excepting 1 of course) will have one of two problems:

1. It is on the edge of Australia, and it is obsolete because of Route 1, circling around the outer edge of Australia.
2. It is not on the edge of Australia, and the part of Australia in the center has almost no people.

The old Pac Highway in Australia suffers from the same problem as the old US 99 here - the new alignments cover up a lot of it, and little interest in preserving what's left. To me, their Highway 1 is "Route 66." Preserve its heritage, honor its old alignments, note its Big Things, etc. What made Route 66 iconic was everything on it, which made people interested in traveling and remembering it.

The Australian Route 66 doesn't necessarily have to go from end to end. The U.S. Route 66 began in Chicago, after all.
