Here to There Photo Game

Jim

I hope it won't be a problem to start another photo game.  I think this one is sufficiently different from ones we've done or are doing, so maybe it will catch on.  My hope is that it will give us an opportunity to post photos that don't fit easily into the other games.

The idea is to form a chain of place names (city/village/town/county/state/country all OK) such that each place in the chain is connected by a single numbered or named route to the next.  The twist is that you must produce a photo showing both the place name and the route that connects it to its predecessor.

For example, I am declaring my hometown of Amsterdam, New York, to be the starting point for the game, so the first photo can be of any place I could get to from any of the 5 numbered routes that pass through Amsterdam: NY 5, NY 5S, NY 30, NY 67, or I-90, as long as the picture shows both the route and the new destination.  I'm going to start out by using I-90 and Buffalo as the first route and destination.  The next play can be any place you can get to from Buffalo by a single route, showing both that route and the destination.

To give us a chance to bounce around the planet over time, you can use another place with the same name anywhere else.  For example, this means if you wanted to choose a place you can get to by a single route from Buffalo, Wyoming, or Buffalo, Missouri, instead of Buffalo, New York, that's a valid play.

(Added 7/6/2018:) A "single route" can include a road which is clearly the same road when it crosses a state, national, or other kind of border, even if the number changes.  For example, I-87 in New York and A-15 in Quebec would be a "single route".

As is the case with most of these, I'll throw out some ground rules.  I'll modify/augment if needed.

  • The same route/destination combination can be used only once.  So I-90 to Buffalo (NY) cannot be played again.
  • No Street View, only photos.  If a photo you post is not your own, please credit and use only with permission.
  • If there are multiple locations that qualify (like my starting post below, which has both Albany and Buffalo that would work), please state the intended destination, and the next play must use that one.
  • No consecutive posts by the same person unless 24 hours have passed with no valid postings.
  • Only official signs "in the wild" are permitted.
  • The route number and destination city must both appear in the photo, but they may be on different signs.

So anyway, here's my initial post to get us going.  Enjoy!

Amsterdam, NY -> Buffalo, NY, via I-90.  This one happens to be in Amsterdam on the Thruway exit 27 on-ramp, but that is not required for the game.    Taken May 8, 2015.

I hope I'm understanding the rules correctly.

I-85 to Greensboro, NC. (I figure that might give more options for the next play than Spartanburg.)

Both the route number and the city name must appear in the photo. "Philadelphia" appears nowhere in that photo.

Since the Philadelphia one was not a valid play, we're still in Portsmouth.

I'll take us on US 4 from there over to Rutland, Vermont.  April 1, 2010.

Jim, wondering if I could ask about a rules clarification as a hypothetical. Does the route number, or road name, itself have to remain consistent for the whole trip? Or is there an international border exception for situations like I-87 becoming Autoroute 15–I'm thinking of, for example, the BGSs in Montreal that have Interstate shields to help you get to I-87 or I-89, although I suppose the sign on the Pont Champlain that lists New York isn't referring to the city but rather to the state.

I don't have a photo of NB-95 because I've never been that way, but in my mind I view that as the same road and same number as I-95.

I suppose it might open too much of a can of worms to allow the Montreal-type signs because then someone could argue that state line number changes should count.

Let's leave it at a single number/name for now and see how it goes.  We can use the "same name place" rule to jump borders or oceans once in a while.

Also, does the new route number have to appear in the photo? Someone played US 19 for Bluefield, WV, despite it not being in the photo.

The photo to Bluefield was listed as US 52, not US 19.
The US 19 photo was from Bluefield to another city.

Since my Philly wasn't a valid play, we'll head down US-7 to New Milford CT.

And then let's take I-84 to Newburgh.

From the last valid play to New Milford, CT...take US202 up to Auburn, ME.  The Interstate home to this sign, Interstate 95, DOES go through Auburn.  Hopefully this can get Maine some unlikely attention, and carry us to a lot of other places.
