April 2024 Bakersfield Road Meet
« on: May 14, 2023, 04:00:58 PM »

Based off the success of the recent Fresno Road Meet I wanted to see what interest is out there for a Bakersfield Road Meet on April, 13 2024?  The Centennial corridor on CA 58 will be open by then and certainly be a hot item interest in the road community.  The rough 3-4 hour tour I have in mind is:

-  Meet in Buttonwillow off I-5 exit 257 at one of the many restaurants.
-  Follow the new alignment of CA 58 on Stockdale Highway, the West Side Parkway and Centennial Corridor to CA 204.
-  Clinch CA 204 (post-1934 US 99 and CA 99 Business).
-  See the Bakersfield Sign which was part of US 99 when it was on Union Avenue (now on Sillect Avenue).
-  Visit Garces Circle and Chester Avenue.  Chester Avenue and 19th Street were pre-1934 alignment of US 99 in Bakersfield.  Garces Circle was opened in 1934 as part of the realignment of US 99.
-  Take CA 178 to the eastern end of Alfred Harrell Highway.
-  Visit Hart Park, the Gordon’s Ferry plaque (of the Stockton-Los Angeles Road) and drive the entirety of Alfred Harrell Highway westbound.  Alfred Harrell Highway west of Hart Park is a Kern County maintained freeway and probably the strangest limited access road I can think of.
-  Follow CA 178 east through Kern Canyon to Lake Isabella.
-  Follow Caliente-Bodfish Road south to modern CA 58.  This is one of the best mountain roads in the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains and passes through the original Kern County seat of Havilah.
-  Follow Old US 466 along Woodford-Tehachapi Road to the Tehachapi Loop.

Worth noting, the date can certainly be played with and I know this is a pretty early posting.  In theory May would be past most of the potential weather related issues typically seen in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

That sounds rather interesting, and I'll definitely put it on my calendar.  My parents lived in Bakersfield from 2010 to 2012 while my dad worked for the City of Taft, so I know a little bit about it already.  Could be fun to see what's changed.

I would be very interested, but I will likely be hosting my 2024 "city meet" (location to be announced) around the same general timeframe as this.  I rather like the late-April/early-May timeframe for hosting my meets, but I will try to avoid the same date as your meet.

Put me as interested!

If I plan ahead a little more, should be able to come this time. Was bummed to miss out on Fresno.

Just saw this (I don't normally read this group). Potentially interested; I"ve blocked the date on my calendar. Please keep me informed (but remember I don't read this group normally).

I’m committed to doing this meet at this point.  I’ll keep you in the loop as I think that a couple of the west coasters in general were just finding out about this tonight.

Due to a recent life event for me likely coming to fruition for me during May I bumped the Bakersfield Meet day up to 4/13.  I don’t believe anyone has fully committed to this meet yet so I wanted to get an update in before that happened.  I am floating doing a second day on the 14th on the Old Ridge Route (US 99) from Grapevine Village to the site of Tumble Inn.  During the course of the week I’ll be refining the 4/13 tour route slightly based of my test run of the West Side Parkway last month.

April 13 may make this a tad harder for me to attend, especially if I end up traveling east for the eclipse earlier that week. If I don't fly east to see the eclipse, it's weekend trip range provided we don't get a late-season storm, so not like I need to plan much in advance. I'm definitely interested provided I'm not out east.
