On a recent trip driving to Florida......I was surprised to see the number of TD (Toronto-Dominion Bank) and PNC - RBC Royal Bank of Canada branches all along the US East coast. Being both a TD and a RBC Client.....No service fees and the exchange rate was good. Just felt like banking at home!

Both banks offer "cross-border" services to regular customers and have even better deals if one sets up a "snowbird" account for people that spend part of the year in the USA.

TD Bank is actually an American Bank headquartered in New Jersey (you can see their headquarters off the NJ Turnpike as you pass under Rt. 70, especially in the winter), which took over Commerce Bank in the 2000's.  It's a subsidiary of TD Bank Group, which allows it to have its multi-national system, giving people easy access to their money.

It's also one of the few banks open Sundays, especially with full-service branches.

There were two divisions in the Northeast that became part of TD Bank: Commerce Bank, which served the Tri-State and the Delaware Valley, and BankNorth (later TD BankNorth), which was a conglomeration of local banks in New England that merged together.  TD BankNorth existed before the acquisition of Commerce Bank (TD Garden was formerly known as TD BankNorth Garden after they acquired the naming rights from Fleet as Fleet merged with B of A).  RBC's US division is now part of PNC.

Originally, the new name for the merged TD Banknorth & Commerce Bank was to be called TD Commerce Bank.  Pamphlets & literature showing the new name were even distributed via mail.

However, another Commerce Bank based out of Worcester, MA complained & even took legal action against TD on the grounds that the new name was too similar to their own bank name (central Mass. had many TD Banknorth branches in the smaller Commerce's serving area).  The MA-based Commerce prevailed and the new name for TD Banknorth/Commerce Bank became the current TD Bank.
