Quote from: webny99 on August 12, 2024, 01:09:51 PMOne minor annoyance with the new features is the default setting to remain logged in for 1 hour when logging in. If I forget to manually change it to 1 week (which is my preference), I'll have to re-login after an hour.

I would definitely prefer if the default setting was 1 day or at least some time period longer than an hour. Other users may find a 6- or 12-hour option useful as well, though I would still choose one of the longer time periods myself regardless of what the default is.

I honestly don't think there's any way to change that.  That's hard coded in the forum software as far as I can tell.

It used to be changeable in the admin settings, but who knows if SMF has taken that away in recent years. But another comment - you can still do "forever" it's just at the very top so its hidden unless you scroll up.

It's still changeable in the admin center. Admin -> Maintenance -> Server Settings -> Cookies and Sessions. Second setting on that page ("Default login cookies length").

I just stumbled across a feature that helps in quoting other posts: select the part you'd like to quote, and a "Quote Selected Text" button appears.
My first SF/horror short story collection is available: "Young Man, Open Your Winter Eye"

Huh, that's pretty neat.

Uh, could we get some sort of dark theme in the meantime before Button Copy 2.0 is done? It gets blinding when I check the forum on my computer before bed.

Sorry. I just keep forgetting/not putting aside the time to work on it. :(

This should probably be the main thread to discuss forum issues rather than the "impostor" thread.

You can't set your country as South Sudan or Kosovo. The former is fully recognized. In addition, you can set it to United Kingdom, or any of England, Wales, or Scotland, but not Northern Ireland.

Sadly, you cannot easily edit the table of countries. (I tried to make Nevada a country.)

No kidding.  Just ask Alan J. Villarruel about his attempt to add Usania to the list of countries.

The country field also doesn't go away if you had a country flag set and no longer do, it just shows a blank space (where Taylor Swift will presumably write your name).  This can be used to interesting effect since the location field doesn't have any heading information, it just displays with no context, so anything put there with a blank (but formerly set) country will appear as if it's a country itself.

This was what led me to see if I could make Nevada a country (since right now it shows me as "Country: Las Vegas, NV").

I see you support a large country on a landmass annex the less populated neighbouring country to the north to unite the landmass against the wishes of the majority of the population of that smaller country!  :-P

(The issue that the forum software has is that there's no official Northern Irish flag - it's just the UK flag - and post-Troubles attempts to make a new civic banner have failed)

Sometimes a forum search will time out with a 504. This is an entirely separate issue from thread search not working; I'm not searching a specific thread this time, and the error is different (504 gateway timeout rather than completes with zero results).

The forum is still generating spates of PHP errors every few minutes or so and the error log has over 20,000 entries as well. I have the server set at PHP version 8.1. SMF 2.1.4 is fully compatible with PHP 7.4 from what A.I. told me. So this problem is likely going to persist unless I roll back the PHP version or SMF comes out with an update.

One option is to have the forum default to a subdomain. With subdomains in Plesk, I can specifically set the PHP version for it. With that in mind, I added PHP version 7.4 to the server and enabled it for the subdomain https://forum.aaroads.com/. However beyond that rickmastfan67 will have to look into it to see if this is a possible option going forward.
