Palm Beach, Florida, is home to a little over 9,000 people. West Palm Beach, on the other hand, has a population of about 117,000 - in other words, about 13 times as big.

Throughout the country, what are some other examples of cities or towns that have a prefix in their name, based on a nearby "non-prefixed" town name - but the town with the prefix is larger, as it is with WPB?

In New Jersey:

Orange (34,447) vs both East Orange (69,612) and West Orange (48,843).  (South Orange has 18,484.)
Caldwell (9,027) vs West Caldwell (11,012). (North Caldwell has 6,694.)

Other candidates include the Plainfields, Brunswicks, Amboys, and Wildwoods, but none of those work.

In Pennsylvania, Darby (9,264) and Upper Darby (85,681).   I thought there'd be more here but generally townships in the Philadelphia suburbs come in pairs where both have prefixes, like  "Lower Merion" and "Upper Merion".

181.7 million = Central America
341.3 million = America

:-D

Alas, this is the opposite of the OPs intention. The prefixed version should have more than the non-affixed.

Aw, crap.  South America, then.  Population 441.9 million.  "It's like America, but South."

West Virginia only has one such pair, and they are not related to each other.  Bonus!  Both are county seats.

  • West Union, Doddridge County (633)
  • Union, Monroe County (408)

North Carolina has two such pairs.  North Topsail and Topsail are intriguing, as they are in adjacent counties but at the opposite ends of the same barrier island.

  • East Flat Rock, Henderson County (5,760)
  • Flat Rock, Henderson County (3,576)

  • North Topsail Beach, Onslow County (1,058)
  • Topsail Beach, Pender County (517)

There are no examples in Colorado. The only cities that begin with the common prefix names (cardinal directions, "new", etc.) are South Fork, New Castle, and Westminster. There is no Fork, Castle, or Minster.
