Title: Why do SO many people hate snow?
Post by: Interstate 69 Fan on December 15, 2017, 09:58:18 AM
I mean, sure snow can disrupt and potentially cause you a lot of cash on your way to work, but other than that, why? Personally, I love snow.

I love snow, just not the reactions of certain drivers toward it.  "Hey, dipshit, I know you don't like snow, but get the hell out of the left lane at 20 miles an hour!  And get off the freeway/tollway if you can't drive in it."

the older you get, the more you hate it, when i was your age, i loved it.  i now hate it.  it's cold, likely windy as hell, and it's really not fun to play in, unless you're a ski fan, or winter sports person.  driving in it is the worst too.

I like the first real snow of the season.

About the fourth or fifth time I'm clearing the driveway, etc.  I'm ready for spring.

My big objection to snow is the disruption a good storm can bring: travel plans are impacted, errands have to be juggled, workdays are messed up due to late openings / early closings / snowclearing if you're a telecommuter.

Driving in the snow can be a lot of fun.  Having to deal with other drivers in the snow is much, much less fun.

After having a couple of big, big snowstorms...excessively high piles of snow eating up lanes of traffic and obstructing views at driveways and intersections is particularly unpleasant.

And, while it's not necessarily snow-related...I've recently discovered that my car's tendency for windows to freeze shut is a particular pain when crossing the US/Canadian border (need to have driver's side front and passenger windows rolled down when you reach the booth).

I enjoy driving in snow because it is the one time of year driving actually requires skill. Otherwise, yeah, I love snow and wish there were more of it. No such thing as too much snow.

I don't mind snow. Living it Wisconsin, it's just a part of life in the winter. The first snowstorm of the winter however is usually interesting. No matter how much or how little the first snowstorm of the season delivers, people have of course forgotten that roads become slippery and need to slow down, and there is a rash of accidents. I do get a chuckle though when cities in the south like Atlanta completely shut down over three inches of snow. Here that's just a dusting and we move on with our lives. My friend was recently in Austin for work, and his trip back home was delayed a whole day because his connecting flight from Austin through Atlanta and then to Green Bay was affected by the 3 inches of snow in Atlanta. Buy a freaking snowplow or two!

You just described the quarter million old geezers (aka "snowbirds") in Arizona that come out here every year to get away from the snow.  They still drive like they're in the middle of a blizzard even though it's 75 and clear outside.

I like the snow, but I too hate the cold and the short days.  I also cannot stand the idiots that travel at full freeway speed when you yourself are slipping and sliding at half the posted speed limit.

Plus walking in a blizzard and having snow drifts blow on you is no fun.

It's been my experience that the weight of the vehicle and the model/wear of the tires has a huge effect on how fast you can drive in snow.

I don't mind driving in the snow; I have AWD, I've driven to and from work during 18" blizzards and it taking 2 hours to go 10 miles.  It's just the two types of other drivers: the Floridian-like driver who does 7 MPH and steps on their brakes every 6 feet.  And then there's the Parnelli Joneses who fly along at 75 MPH like they're immortal and then end up slamming on their brakes and end up stuck in a drift.  But what I really hate about snow is A. Having to shovel and snowblow it every other day it seems (those that don't own a home can't relate unless they do it for a job or side job), and B. Having to look at it on the ground for 4 months straight.  It's a novelty for a few days, but when it refuses to melt, piles of it are turning brown from the sand and salt, the sand and salt that eats away at your car, and then it melting and refreezing, meaning you have to spend $$$ on rock salt or walk like a penguin and be afraid of falling every 10 feet.  Snow is nice to look at somewhere else, and it's nice to ski on, but I'm a NIMBY when it comes to it.

Yes I hear you on that one.  I remember one year its snowed three feet, where it remained sub freezing for over a month and it was on the ground, for what it seemed like, forever.  It happened in January and melted in March.  It was one of the worst. winters NJ had  as most of the time it would be in the 30's and 40's at least for a few days even when we get sub zero.  That used to last a few days tops, and even to be in the teens never lasted more than forty-eight hours as it would peak about 30 and you would get even two or three February Days of 40 like temps.

:hmmm:  We don't own our house, but that doesn't keep us from having to shovel the driveway when it snows.  It's not like our landlords make the drive from Utah every time it snows here and shovel it for us.

Because people don't know how to drive in it. Like today for example I had to make a trip from Saginaw, Michigan to Holland, Michigan and back. Going to Holland I took I-75 to Flint then took I-69 to Lansing, I-96 to Grand Rapids, M-6 to I-196 and then I-196 to Holland. On the way back I took I-196 to M-6 to I-96 to I-69 to M-13.

Let's just say that there are too many people that shouldn't even be on the road that clog up the traffic flow. On just about every stretch of highway I drove on today I encountered slow moving traffic in the left lane and long lines of it too because for some reason people think that they are entitled to drive in the left lane and move at about 62 mph when your trying to do 80 mph. Semi trucks that take forever to pass another semi truck moving maybe 1 or 2 mph slower than the truck that's doing the passing slows you down the same way. I twice got off the highway and took alternate routes, first time I used the Grand River/Cascade combo in between Portland and Grand Rapids instead of I-96 due to heavy traffic and then used Old M-78 for the same reason instead of I-69 coming back.

People really need to stay out of the left lane if their movements aren't very fast because it just clogs traffic up for the simple fact that you don't know how to drive. I only encountered one situation where I felt 80 mph might be a little too fast and that was in blizzard like conditions on I-96 between Lansing and Grand Rapids.

I've vented about US 23 long enough now my frustrations are on I-96 and I-69 both of which should be at least six lanes throughout the state.

Because it's disruptive. Fortunately I do not have the responsibility of clearing any walkways but snow still makes me have to clean off my car before using it, slows the process of driving places down, and, with enough of it, renders travel temporarily impossible.

I wouldn't say that I hate snow but it certainly makes travel in the mountain states incredibly difficult when it just has fallen.  Anyone that has been stuck having to put chains on their car in a mushy roadway probably knows how annoying and really just hazardous the snow can be.  It doesn't help that several of my favorite roads like Tioga Pass Road, CA 108, CA 4, and Sherman Pass Road all shut down in the winter.

A good snow day!

I know here in Florida it was nice to have a day or 2 off because of hurricane, power is out no one expects you at work etc.. provided of course your home isn't damaged.

I think it's simpler than that:  For some reason, people think they no longer have to look out for anybody else when there's snow.  Checking mirrors, using turn signals, keeping right–it all goes out the window.  The window that they may or may not have scraped clear before leaving home.

It's ridiculous I was on I-96 on Friday and everybody was using the left lane I got in the right lane to pass about 10 vehicles at a time which is all I could do to get back over I was doing a lot of weaving

I don't mind snow per se.  For that matter, I don't mind the cold or dark at this time of year.  However, I would hesitate to winter in the snow belt because salt and other deicing chemicals greatly shorten the life of car underbodies, brake lines, suspension components, etc. even with modern rustproofing.

Personally, I enjoy commuting in the dark. It wouldn't be a real holiday season without doing so, and it makes congestion infinitely more bearable.

Having lived all of my 18 years in the Great Lakes Snow Belt, I have probably seen more snow already than most of y'all will see in a lifetime. Today is the tenth day so far this season that we've had two or more inches fall. We have an insane amount of freeze-thaw cycles, so we rarely have more than two feet at once, but still end up with about 100 inches per season on average. Also, Rochester benefits from both Lake Erie snow (early season), and Lake Ontario snow (late season). That means we can easily outdo Buffalo when it comes to yearly snowfall.

Growing up in the midwest on both sides of Lake Michigan I loved a good lake effect blizzard-when I was a kid.

Now that I am an adult with responsibilities, places to go-things to do I don't like snow any more.

And yes, all the jokes about the southeast and snow are correct. My youngest missed more school days due to snow during the winter of 2013-2014 than I did my ENTIRE school career from pre-k to college-and we never recieved more than 3 inches in any one snow event that winter.

If the weatherman says that there is a system that bears some watching in the next week to 10 days every store runs out of bread and milk by the end of that business day.

But ice is another story. You can keep the ice. If it ever ices again it will be too soon.

In most of the southeastern United States, many people don't know how to drive in snow, so the region shuts down. In most of the northern United States and in high-elevation areas, about 99.5% do. However, this means 0.5% doesn't, which means in a place like Chicago, you'll encounter an idiot every few minutes.

Here in Salt Lake City, anyone who's a Utah native knows how to drive in snow. The problem is the SoCal transplants who don't understand that if the road is white, it's not going to have as much traction.

It's almost unheard of for a vehicle NOT to have front wheel drive.  And some vehicles like the Honda CRV are mainly all-wheel drive vehicles.  They do sell a front-wheel drive version in the south.  But, regardless, it's not like when people move from the north to the south they have to surrender their vehicle for a rear-wheel drive vehicle.

"Almost unheard of for a vehicle NOT to have front-wheel drive" overstates the case a bit.  Besides pickups, which are universally RWD unless equipped with 4x4 or AWD, RWD (with optional AWD) is still the norm for luxury sedans and high-performance cars.

I think it is true that pickups and other default-RWD vehicles are better represented in the vehicle population in the Deep South than in northern states.  But I also suspect a factor in the extreme response to winter weather down south is the greater likelihood of ice as the major form of precipitation in a winter storm.

Re:  RWD –
My 2006 Pathfinder SUV is rear-wheel drive as well.  I do have 4WD, but the base model without 4WD is also rear drive.

Re: Drivers in the South –
We bought a car in Tennessee one February, and we had to drive through some sleet and ice in western Kentucky to get there.  To be fair, we did see some accidents, including one rolled-over tractor-trailer being unloaded sideways in the right lane of I-24.  But it really was annoying to be driving along at 55 mph and come upon someone doing 30 mph.  Without fail, cars with Illinois or Missouri license plates were going 50-60 mph, while cars with Georgia or South Carolina plates were going 30-40 mph.  But I guess I'd rather have that than a bunch of wrecks.

Once, I was driving the stretch of I-40 between I-26 and Knoxville–this was January 2011–and even though snow was falling, the Interstate was fairly clear and I was doing probably 45-50 in the left lane. I was passing everyone with a TN/NC license plate. My car at the time was a Ford Taurus–not exactly the exemplar of winter driving...

I was traveling on I-75 between Saginaw and Flint, Michigan the other day. I was heading SB towards Flint and I think I passed almost every car that was on the highway. Everyone was doing about 50 mph at the most and I was doing 80 mph since the road was clear and there wasn't any ice or anything. I just don't get why people are only doing 50 mph on I-75 when the conditions were clear and the minimum speed limit is 55. I blew past these cars like they were standing still. If you don't know how to drive on an Interstate highway do us all a favor and don't get on the highway at all, there are alternate routes you can use.

In those areas, the South and southeast in particular......and no one has front or 4 wheel drive.

Are you kidding me???  :wow:  :eyebrow: Many many people have 4 wheel drive pick up trucks....for hunting & mud boggin'! Please watch the video to see what I mean.

https://youtu.be/TLEDieVhirQ

And there are plenty of front wheel drive cars to go around. I own one.
I had the same reaction.. 4wd is a status symbol in the South LOL.. and most cars are FWD

I like snow.  It weeds out the riff-raff.

The cold can get a little tiresome, but without it, you don't really appreciate summer I think.

Highs in the 30s and 40s are low enough to make me appreciate summer again.  You can keep the single digits and negative numbers.

Moving away from snow doesn't prevent it from falling. Some of us will have to put up with it either way.

the older you get, the more you hate it, when i was your age, i loved it.  i now hate it.  it's cold, likely windy as hell, and it's really not fun to play in, unless you're a ski fan, or winter sports person.  driving in it is the worst too.
Exactly! It"˜ll be -2 in Fort Smith on Monday (according to the NWS)! Talk about freezing your ass off! ❄️❄️❄️

I certainly haven't considered moving just to escape weather that is unpleasant for all or part of the year.  I find that places that have year-round pleasant weather also tend to have some combination of a high cost of living or restricted opportunity to attain economic autonomy.  (The two often go together.)

In terms of the car ownership experience, I live in Kansas about 200 miles from the triple point where climate zones Cfa, Dfa, and BSk come together, so I don't have to worry about underbody corrosion from deicing chemicals.  However, the combination of heat and humidity in summer can be very unpleasant in wet years, and with an older car this is a more serious problem at the margin because it is harder to maintain an elderly R-134a air-conditioning system in good working order than it was with R-12.  R-134a is a smaller molecule, so it leaks more easily; it is also a less effective refrigerant, so compressor output tends to become an issue after a couple of decades.

However, in terms of homeownership upper Cfa is better than lower Dfa because of reduced risk of rooftop ice damming from a period of prolonged snowfall.  We have never had this problem here in Wichita, but up in Omaha (300 miles north) a few years ago it led to many homeowners dealing with roof leaks.

Littoral and montane geographies also introduce layers of problems additional to those brought by climate.

The only thing I don't like about snow is how it skrews with my running schedule. If its less than 2 inches with a slight melt, I'm skrewed on that day. If the base is higher, I can just wear my racing spikes to run.

From what I remember, the thread was about whether snow had landed on the Interstate, not whether the road was closed.

Snow has landed on I-4. Snow landed on I-2 before I-2 was designated, but not after (at the time of the thread).

I-10 might get a freak snowstorm in the southwest, but I can't see it happening for I-12.

Snowstorms in places that don't often see snow (like the desert southwest--it has happened) are actually more likely to close the road, since those areas aren't used to it, and often won't have snow removal equipment. It's the same reason an inch of snow doesn't bother most people in the northern half of the country, but put that same inch in Atlanta and all hell breaks loose.

In most of the southeastern United States, many people don't know how to drive in snow, so the region shuts down.

One could argue that about the west coast as well.

In those areas, the South and southeast in particular, they don't have any snow removal equipment, and no one has front or 4 wheel drive.

Here in Salt Lake City, anyone who's a Utah native knows how to drive in snow. The problem is the SoCal transplants who don't understand that if the road is white, it's not going to have as much traction.

I suspect you don't drive. Nearly all mainstream passenger cars are front wheel drive.

Actually, I do drive. I was exaggerating about no one having front wheel drive. But as J N Winkler stated upthread, pickup trucks and luxury sedans are often RWD, unless you specifically get a front or 4 wheel option. But if you live in the south, you probably wouldn’t see a need do that.

Sure, but I think the bulk of passenger vehicles these days are front wheel drive. Not sure about down south, but all wheel drive sure is getting common up in New England.

Subaru only comes with all wheel drive.  So every one sold is 4wd and they are more popular in the South now.

Lots of people have 4 WD for off road, mud, dirt roads, heavy rain etc.  As I have written before  4WD is somewhat of a status symbol

Well, according to the NWS, I am fixin to get my bi-yearly dose of snow tomorrow, to wit:

...WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM WEDNESDAY MORNING
THROUGH THURSDAY MORNING...

* WHAT...Heavy mixed precipitation possible. Plan on difficult
travel conditions. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches
and ice accumulations of up to one tenth of an inch are
  possible.

* WHERE...Portions of eastern North Carolina.

* WHEN...From Wednesday morning through Thursday morning.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Significant reductions in visibility are
  possible.

Luckily for once my weird work schedule will be in my favor and I will be off Wednesday and Thursday.

Consider having 3 inches or more on the ground for the past week (ever since Christmas Eve), and then starts snowing today, making it 7 inches. Gotta love lake effect snow.

If you don't want school, can we offer you some of our ice as schools tend to hate that more than snow?  :bigass:

No. I hate being outside with ice on the ground.

I use to love having ice on the ground. Pond hockey is the best.

Personally, I like snow. Winter is not complete without it, and it is truly stunning, especially on sunny days after a big snowfall

The problem with snow is the impact it has on roads and driveways. I have to waste time with snow removal (and driving slower) that I could otherwise spend roadgeeking.

My, you're a cheerful sort.

At a certain point I realized there are too many months of winter to concede to it as a source of misery.  I know it's a common teenage hobby to turn all twelve months into a source of misery, but I think most folks eventually find bigger fish to fry than the weather.

I actually like shoveling snow, in lifts of up to three inches, as long as I can get to it before cars go between the garage and the street and pack the snow beneath their tire treads.  However, I doubt I will get to do that this winter, though the present warming spell is due to end tonight and there is snow in the forecast for tomorrow.

It is very satisfying to accomplish the simple goal of moving some snow from one place to another.  I like the look of a freshly shoveled walkway.  Plus it's a productive way to exercise in the winter.  You really work some interesting muscle combinations.

It figures, the morning after I said that, we got a bunch of ice.  Let me make this clear, Universe:  I like clearing snow from my car, but I hate scraping ice from my car.  Had a nice (not!) drive to work during which my max speed was 40 mph, and only one car passed me.  I lost traction and fishtailed once, while driving in a straight line at a steady 30 mph.  Several accidents, including a truck who couldn't make it up a gentle incline ramp to the highway and got stuck sideways across the ramp.  Then, after I got to work, there were flurries for about five minutes.  Now the sun is out.  This is the worst winter weather.  Give me SNOW!  Not ice.  SNOW!

I hear you.  I was out for five minutes with a plastic shovel and gave up when I realized it was all ice--there was no snow on top to blade off.  Fortunately ice has lower albedo than snow and the ground is still fairly warm, so it should go away fairly quickly.

I'm glad I live a block away from school so I don't have to drive and I still find it annoying. Least favorite winter weather piece by far.

Wait... Least favorite weather piece by far. I don't care that school is out when it happens, it doesn't make a difference.

What drives me nuts the most is when weather forecasters change the amount of snow forecasted 90% of the time it's more. Never made sense to me I would think them being off would have just as equal chance on the lesser side as on the higher side but for what ever reason that is not the case.
Title: Re: Why do SO many people hate snow?

I work for a major university in upstate New York and love hearing students complain about snow when they are not properly dressed, wearing unlayered shoes, sans gloves, scarves and other protective covering. Our campus is geared around residents - not commuters, and as such, we rarely call off for a snow day.

When I began work here, I was told we "very rarely" get snow days. And the next week after that? Three feet of snow in one day - and one day off of work.

Of course, up here, you expect snow. You expect winter conditions. You expect wind - especially in the Finger Lakes and near the Great Lakes. If students don't come prepared or simply don't care, no big deal.

I might be biased though. I love the snow, backpacking in it, ice fishing and all that. Bring it on.

I don't know. In Rochester it seems the forecasters often predict more. This was the case with the storm that passed through yesterday - forecasts called for 8 inches and we got maybe four or so.

No doubt - the timing works out well. But take Presidents Day out of the picture, and I'm pretty confident there would still be a week of school vacation in February.

Only if there's also one in April (which there is in Massachusetts). In the absence of anything else, the week off would probably be in March, so that it's not too close to Christmas break.

In Ontario, elementary/high schools get March Break, while universities (and probably colleges?) get Reading Week in February (the week of Family Day, which is the same day as President's Day). I think it's silly that the weeks don't line up, since it makes it more challenging to schedule family vacations.

Anyway, all my midterms were this week, so I'm looking forward to a bit of a break this Reading Week

I seem to remember getting a 2 day break around Presidents day in February back in elementary school both in Michigan and Illinois until ML King Jr's Birthday became a thing. Once schools were forced to give us the day off for that (a mere 2 weeks after coming back from Christmas break) they stopped giving us the February break entirely.

None of my kids ever had that February break here in NC. Actually they ended up getting screwed out of any extra days off in the spring because they had to make up for any hurricane/snow days missed in the fall and winter. My youngest lost all of his teacher work days and half of his spring break, as well as a Saturday, to that his freshman year. I'm glad he graduated early this year, because he would have had to make up time this semester for the week they lost due to that dusting of snow and ice we had in early January.

snow can disrupt and potentially cause you a lot of cash on your way to work

That's why.

Also, shoveling sucks.

And even when I don't have to shovel, moving around sucks. The bottom of the staircase at my apartments, there was an icy patch one day. I fell and hurt my leg and ankle and I was sore for the next week. I can only be fortunate it wasn't more severe (I could still walk okay, didn't need any medical attention, etc.). As I get older those kind of accidents will be less kind on the body. Not to mention, public sidewalks and bike lanes/paths often aren't properly maintained, making you even more car dependent (which brings us back to the original point).

Also, planning trips of any kind (road trips mainly, but air travel too) is really rolling the dice in the winter. And we often take road trips in December or late November. Driving Boise to Portland this Christmas, I saw a lot of near accidents very close to my vehicle (and passed one bad accident in the other direction of the freeway). That's more of a problem with ice than snow, but I lump them together, since snow melts then refreezes into ice. We've lucked out so far, but there's been times where just a few days before or after we made a long drive, that same highway was completely closed or very treacherous. It'll happen to us someday.

Snow after March 1st sucks.  March 1st hits and you're in a Spring state of mind, only to be thrown back into the middle of January again.  You're thinking Easter, but the weather says it's Christmas.  What's coming tonight and tomorrow makes me want to bring the Christmas tree back up from the basement and put on some Nat King Cole or Bing Crosby.

My family in the NE cannot get a break. They got 2 feet of snow in Skylar, on top of that, it’s March, and models are picking up on a FOURTH nor’easter. At this point, I’m calling this “The 2017 Hurricane season: Nor’Easter edition”

The storms will continue until the naming of them ceases. :bigass:

Having a sequence of nor'easters isn't that uncommon.

What is unusual is having the weekly nor'easters this late in the season.  One or two big blows in late winter isn't too abnormal.  Four, however...somewhat remarkable.

As to this being the result of storm naming... I'd blame it on TWC's storm naming, rather than the concept itself.  The local CBS affiliate has been naming storms for many, many years, dating back to when the station's weather department was actually principally a support division of Travelers Insurance.

(Simple storm names help with the discussion of insurance claims.)

My experience with the 3 Nor'easters so far:

First (3/2): All rain, lots of wind
Second (3/7): 16", lots of wind, snow so heavy a snowblower couldn't move it.
Third (3/13): 4" for me, but 2 feet not too far away.  Not too bad for wind, compacted down so I really didn't even need a snowblower.
Fourth (3/20-21): European model saying a miss, GFS saying a hit.  Hoping the European model prevails.
Fifth (3/24): ???

Ventusky says 3/21 is a hit for both your location and my location, but there's nothing on 3/24.

We've had six inches or more of snow on the ground since March 1st. That's a long time period even for mid-winter, but even more abnormal for March. Having both sunlight and feet of snow on the ground at 7:00 pm is rather strange.

I have good news: the European model is generally more accurate (emphasis on generally).

As of now, the GFS seems to have joined the European model and forecasts snows south of NYC and spared the hard hit areas of New England...

And now, of course, we're getting screwed again.  8-12" on Wednesday.  Hope this crap gets out of here by Memorial Day  :ded:

And we only got 2-3"  tops, with 21"  just across LI Sound about 50 miles (as the crow flies) away.

When I was watching the weather on News10 last night, Tim Drawbridge noted that the North American model has actually been the most accurate model with respect to this year's storms.
