Nevada state highways in Las Vegas area

are any of the surface streets labeled as state highways in LV on google maps actually state highways?  they don't seem to be labeled at all in the field. is summerlin parkway really a state road?

That is the Summerlin Parkway thread, and it was discussed there that NDOT now has ownership of the road and there are some Nevada State Route 613 shields in the field, especially at the 215 interchange

Very few SRs in Nevada are truly unsigned. Almost all of them have a shield somewhere. This includes all of the stuff in Vegas.

And if they don't, they have NDOT mileposts. Even the old-style mileposts have the route number on them.

Of course, NDOT often puts route markers in odd places where they aren't useful for navigation, rather than at junctions where DOTs usually put them.

And if you can't find the milepost, try looking on the traffic signals. A substantial number of them in the Las Vegas metro are taped onto the masts, like this:

Most of them are, or at least were. Google's state route labeling doesn't always match 100% to the most up to date NDOT state-maintained highways book.

Reassurance signage on most routes is sparse at best, and signage is virtually non-existent on some routes (especially shorter routes). Junction signage is non-existent. For longer routes, you will usually find the end/begin signage posted at the termini (sometimes the "begin" assembly does not include a "begin" banner and just has the cardinal direction), and sometimes that may be it.

Signing of shields seems to be better on routes whose shield also appears on freeway signage, because these are a bit more useful in navigation and/or may lead somewhere outside the Las Vegas Valley—SR 146, SR 159 (prior to recent partial relinquishment), SR 160, SR 564, and maybe the northern reaches of SR 604. The recent addition of SR 613 signage on the western half of Summerlin Pkwy is the rare exception.

Routes typically do have mileposts. But instead of being posted at every mile, they are typically posted at signalized intersections in sticker form (as US 89 pointed out).


For what it's worth, this MO is also prevalent up in the Reno area.

Unsigned routes are probably more prevalent in the Reno area than near Vegas, if only because Reno has more very short routes. By my count, there are 5 fully unsigned routes around Reno and 1 near Carlin, plus one unsigned segment of a route in Reno. I can't think of any fully unsigned routes near Vegas off the top of my head, mainly because Vegas that doesn't have any that are extremely short.

SR 878 is likely the only route that lacks both shields and mileposts, but it is listed in the log and shown on NDOT GIS.

SR 171 - Airport Connector
SR 602 - Casino Center Blvd (extremely short)

A few others that weren't signed have been eliminated or downgraded to "frontage road" status over the last 10 years or so (e.g. SR 591 & SR 594, both of which were short segments of major arterials near interchange areas of I-15).
