Title: September 2022 Central Pennsylvania Road Meet Is now set for 9/24/22
Post by: jpi on July 11, 2021, 06:52:29 PM
Finally, after being postponed due to Covid restaurant restrictions I bring you the Sept. 2022 South Central Pennsylvania Road Meet!
The focus of this is on the new diverging diamond interchange on I-83 in Shrewsbury, the first of its kind in York County, we will also travel the southern section of the Susquehanna trail (old US 111) from York to Shrewsbury, we will also check out a newer alignment of PA 214 in the Loganville area that was done in the past 15 years.

Last if we have nice weather and you are up to a good walk after we check out PA 214 we will walk the York County heritage rail trail and check out the oldest active rail tunnel in the United States, the Howard Tunnel, we will park at Gladfelters Station and the walk is around 90 minutes round trip and is the only way to access this tunnel outside of train.

If the weather is not so good an alternative will be determined closer to the time.

We will meet at the new South County Brewery\ restaurant at 11am for lunch and is one of the newest and nicest restaurants in York County and car pool from there. It is located off exit 14 Leader Hights PA 182 exit on I-83 (not far from my childhood home)

define "Traditional".  Restaurant vs park pavilion?  For your information, car pooling did resume with the QC meet.

I posted a comment in response to the post on the Roadgeekery group on Facebook, but I figured I'd share a response here as well.

I'm glad to hear that you're looking at hosting this meet!  I am interested in attending, but it's unlikely that I'll be able to go in light of the fact that it will be so close to the timing of when I'll be hosting my Outer Banks gathering in April 2022.  I'm nowhere ready to make my official announcement about that (the announcement probably won't come until late fall or early winter), but I've been thinking that my Outer Banks gathering will take place on either April 23 or April 30.  If it turns out that April 23 is the date you go with for your meet, I'll probably choose April 30 for my meet in case there are folks who might be interested in attending both.  I'm not really a fan of the idea of forcing folks to choose.

I was referring to restaurant, as for car pooling I knew that already.

I have now added a poll for the 2 dates mentioned, these are the only dates I can use for this since I will be in central PA that week for other stuff besides the meet. Thanks everyone!

Google says Easter next year is the 17th, so I voted for the 23rd.  I'm not sure if I'd be going to this, as I was considering a cross-country trip next year (although I have to admit that the prospect does intimidate me, especially given the tendency of non-roadmeet, non-family trips to blow up in my face; I wonder if after Easter would be enough of a family connection to avoid the curse?), and after Easter would be the most likely time for me to take it given scheduling around things at work and wanting to avoid peak summer travel days.  That said, if I didn't do that, I could see a combined Easter/Roadmeet vacation week if this were on the 23rd.

The entire thing is during Passover. Between that and AJ's meet it'd be nice if this could be scheduled in a different timeframe.

Yeah, if it's during Passover a few prominent road enthusiasts who may otherwise attend may not be able to. I'm against scheduling meets during major religious holidays.

Furthermore, if it's Easter weekend, there's a 0% chance I would be able to attend.

Remember, this is being scheduled at a time that will coincide with a time when he is already going to be in Pennsylvania. It's not like he's doing this in his backyard in Tennessee, when he could conveniently schedule it anytime. And it wouldn't exactly be convenient for him to make a special trip to Pennsylvania to host the meet.

I plan to get a poll started soon on the dates, the dates do focus around a time when myself and possibly Steph plan to be in the area (if she can get the time off) I had originally planed to do this in April 2020 or April 2021 but we all pretty much know why I put that on hold. Also we would meet for lunch at 11am at one of the local restaurants in the Shrewsbury area, TBD (There is a Cracker Barrel there but that is bottom of the list)  So any and all feedback and thoughts on the rail trail walk will be taken into consideration.

Too early for me to really have a preference but either date would be good.  This will likely be a meet that I would make an effort to attend regardless of the date unless something else got in the way.

I don't see an issue for me with either date. The 16th might be slightly easier for me only because I know that Sunday the 17th (Easter) I won't have to work, thus making a longer trip (if I ultimately choose to do so) more feasible. If I had to, I could certainly do this as a day trip, but I may just decide to get away a bit longer.

Given that April 16 falls inside of Easter weekend, and I will likely be in MA visiting family, I selected April 23.

Keeping my eye on this meet.  Hopefully, I won't have to cancel out like I did for the 2016 meet.

4/16 is definitely a no-go for me because of Passover.

Hi everyone, now that I am back from my 4800 mile road trip\ county clinching I can now focus more on this, it looks like April 23 is the preferred date, I plan to be back in York county next month between 9/20 and 9/25 so I will be doing some more scouting and may check out the restaurant I am planning to host this at. Thanks everyone for the feed back.

So it looks like April 23 is the day. I plan to get a facebook page set up and invites sent out the end of next month after I do more scouting and maybe have lunch at the possible restaurant where we will meet up at. Thanks again everyone! April 23 it is!

Hi Everyone, just so you all know I have not forgotten about this, infact I am planning on making a facebook event for this next week but I have a question, would you all be more willing to do the BYOL option and we meet at the Northern Central Rail Trail parking lot in Springfield Township (York County) and we walk (roughly a mile one way) to Howard Tunnel or stick with my original plan of meeting at one of the restaurants in Shrewsbury (possibly Cracker Barrel) for lunch at 11 and then head out from there? Any feed back would be great.

I made the dumb mistake of not looking at my choir rehearsal calendar before saying that April 23rd is best for me...my choir's 2021 Spring Concert is Sunday the 24th in Towson, MD so dress rehearsal is Saturday the 23rd...

so what I think will happen is that Mike and Rainee will come to the meet on time and I will join you all later. I'd be happy to have dinner afterwards with anyone willing to hang around after the meet.

One more question for everyone, would you all prefer meeting at Cracker barrel which is right off the exit for Shrewsbury and right by the diverging diamond interchange or a local family restaurant called Mason Dixon family restaurant which is on the Susquehanna trail (old US 111) in Shrewsbury which is a typical central PA style family restaurant? reason I ask is I am finally about to post the facebook event later today, thanks everyone

I am generally a fan of local restaurants, but the Barrel might be better able to handle a group our size and separate checks. >70% chance I'll be at this thing, but I don't have a real preference for the lunch location.

Concurring here.  I would prefer a local place to meet at but if logistics make a chain establishment more feasible (see Susquehanna 2018), then so be it.

Thanks everyone, logistic wise the Barrel may work out better for lunch, I also found out Mason Dixon family restaurant (the other choice) closes at 3 in the afternoon, I figured a dinner option will be more of a "game day" choice, also there is a small possibility I may have to break away to the Antique Car museum in Hershey to set up for my other hobby which there is a show for the next day but it would not be long so way may end up in the Harrisburg area at the end of the meet, I-83 construction around Colonial Park is done so that may be the last area we will see and there is several local diners up that way that are good for dinner.

***Due to a combination of events from other road meets being planned for April and a family event now taking place on the original date of this meet I am now postponing this meet until Saturday Sept. 24, 2022

I am sorry about this but a celebration of life is now taking place on this same original meet date for my recently diseased cousin also there is already 2 additional road meets being planned for April so I have decided to push this back to Saturday September 24, 2022 the restaurant will be the Shrewsbury Cracker Barrel and will meet at 11am (also I do get a discount on meal and retail purchases) This will also give me more time to fully plan out this meet and as far as I know there is no other meets planned around this date. Thank you all for your understanding.

I am so sorry for your loss, Jason.

If anyone is interested in doing a bridge walk/run nearby as a pre-meet activity with the MDRoads crew, the Susquehanna River Running Festival is on Saturday 9/24 this year and has a 10K course that includes going over the Hatem Bridge in Havre de Grace, MD. It'll be a little tight time-wise but doable - race starts at 8:30, finish and leave by 10 am to get to Shrewsbury by 11 am. https://www.srrf.org/10-kilometer

Happy first day of September!  Now that the Philly National meet is behind us time to now focus on the next Pennsylvania road meet!  We will meet at 11am at South County Brewery which is off I-83 at PA 182 Leader Heights exit, we will then head south to Shrewsbury and drive through York Counties only diverging diamond interchange, take a drive along the Susquehanna Trail and check out a newer alignment of PA 214 near Loganville and plan A if the weather is nice we will hike the York County Heritage Rail Trail to Howard tunnel (a 45 minute walk one way from where we will park) we will also get our group pic taken there. If the weather is less then perfect (raining, ect...) then plan B will be tracing more of the Susquehanna Trail from North York to the Harrisburg area and check out the newely reconstructed I-83 in the Colonial Park area. I plan to be in York County again by Thursday evening 9/22 and will do some last minute scouting before we all meet up on Saturday. So far it looks like 7 confirmed and 26 maybes per my facebook event so I will need a more accurate count soon so I can let South County know. I will also have the itenrary printed out for everyone by then too. Looking forward to seeing everyone for what will be my 3rd central PA hosted road meet!

If we have to go with Plan B, I am more than happy to work with you Jason on some other stuff to check out in the Harrisburg area such as the Everhart Covered Bridge.

Ok, thanks I will keep that in mind but again as long as there is no heavy rain, even if it is just overcast we should be good for the walk to Howard tunnel

I may have to bow out of this one because Life Happens; I now have A LOT going on in the days before and after the meet.  Saturday is at the moment still do-able but Sunday is spoken for.

Me, Mike, and Rainee are in! We have a friend who is interested in coming with us so there might be a fourth person with us!

FYI, the walk to Howard Tunnel is 1.8 miles each way for a round trip total of 3.6 miles...I'd recommend for people to bring folding camp chairs with them if they are unable to walk. Our friend won't be walking, and if Rainee is asleep in the car when we get to that stop then one of us will be hanging back with her.

This is it, 6 more days to go! I have made reservations at the restaurant and also Steph may be joining us for the lunch portion (she is currently in Harrisburg spending time with family this week) At this point the weather is looking good with a high of 74 and partly sunny skies for Saturday so it looks like we will be doing a hike on the rail trail to see the oldest functioning railroad tunnel in the USA!

This is also where I plan to do our group photo so make sure also to have good walking shoes, the trail is level but watch out for joggers and bikers too. I am finalizing the itinerary and will have print outs at the restaurant. As for carpooling we should be fine with leaving cars in the parking lot of the restaurant, I personally only have room for one person if I drive my minivan as it is full of merchandise for my other hobby related activities on Sunday.

And speaking of I will have to head to Hershey by 5:30 to get set up for that event so you all are free to do whatever you want for dinner, if you all pic somewhere in the Harrisburg area I may be able to join you when I am done unloading the van and setting up. So, after we make our hike to Howard tunnel and back to the parking area at Gladfelter's Station we will be "open" for whatever you all like to do, I was thinking we still trace the Susquehanna Trail north of York to Lemoyne but again that is up to you all. Looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend!!  :)

Well if you are on US 30 that day, there is at least some sort of commonality.

Here is the final draft of the itinerary-

South Central York County Pennsylvania Road Meet Itinerary 9/24/22

We will depart from South County Brewery and get on I-83 at Leaders Heights exit and go south to exit 4 PA 851 Shrewsbury, we will get off and take 581 east through the diverging diamond interchange and turn around at Wolfe Rd ( there is an old gas station on the right) then go west on 851 back through the interchange and take 851 to Main St (Susquehanna Trail) and make a right, we will then follow the Susquehanna Trail north to Loganville and will make a drink\ restroom stop at the Rutters convenience store at the intersection with PA 214 on the north side of Loganville.

From Loganville Rutters we will go west on PA 214 for about 5 miles, the first mile of 214 is a newer alignment done back around 2007, this took traffic off an old alignment in Loganville which included a sharp turn from the trail on to PA 214 that big rigs could hardly do it. The new alignment is much nicer and more modern and goes through a newer development call Logans Reserve. We will follow PA 214 through Springfield Township and even past where my first childhood home was (it’s gone now) and will come to a fork in the road with Glatfelter’s Station Rd.

At Glatfelter’s Station Rd we will turn right on to it and follow it about a mile to the rail trail, there is a parking area and even an outhouse restroom. From there we will walk 1.8 miles to Howard Tunnel where we will check it out and get our group picture taken (again make sure you have good walking shoes\ sneakers) there is benches to sit every few yards if we need to stop and rest. The time for the round trip walk to the tunnel is around 90 minutes. The trail is level since it does follow an active rail line that is only used for excursion passenger trains and very little freight, but I do plan to talk about the history of this rail line including how the rain from Tropical Storm Agnes washed away a lot of bridges over the nearby Codorus Creek in June 1972 (6 months before I was born).

After seeing the tunnel, we will walk back to the Glatfelter’s Station parking area and if we have time and it’s not too late we can decide on a few other options, one is Indian Rock Dam which is roughly 3 miles from the tunnel, it is an earth dam built to control potential flooding on the west branch Codorus Creek. We can also go back over to I-83 and see the now finished after 7 years Mt Rose Ave interchange and as I mentioned before trace the Susquehanna Trail north from North York and Bus I-83 north to Lemoyne.

From there I will have to peal off to Hershey to get set up for my diecast toy show. So far, the weather is looking good, partly sunny and a high of 70 as of 5 days out. For those who need my # it is 615-519-3686. Also, I will only have rom for 1 person in my mini van and I do plan on driving so you all can follow me, the directions are pretty easy and I have the route marked on the map below (from Rutters and Sus.Trail to the parking area for the rail trail)

I'll be in a rental again because getting my car in my shop is much easier said than done these days so I have no issue taking people this time.

I may end up driving myself and peeling off as well, depending on how likely it is that we'd be going up Susquehanna Trail to Lemoyne.  My hotel for the weekend is in Harrisburg, so that would save me an hour of riding back and driving back up.  The dam and the Mt. Rose Ave interchange both sound interesting.

Maybe I can incorporate some of the stuff that I wanted to show recently as part of a post-meet/pre-dinner tour.

I know it has been over a week since the meet, Steph and I got back to our home in middle TN fine last week, I want to say thank you to all who attended, we had around 15 people show up for the lunch part of the meet and a half dozen of us who made the 3 mile round trip walk to Howard Tunnel from Gladfelters station, my pics are posted on my Facebook page including the group photo at South County Brewery and a good selfie group pic that Mark Sinsabaugh posted. I am also getting an idea for another meet with a rail trail aspect to it for next year or 2024, this would take place in Lancaster County just across the Susquehanna River.

I really wish I knew when the US 30/US 222 interchange construction would begin right now.

Not sure on that one either but it is MUCH needed, too bad we can't take a trip back in time to about early 80's so some you younger people can see what 30 looked like around Lancaster then, I remember is well and it was quite an adventure! I even got to drive it in my early days of driving in the early 90's
