Title: 1-Lane Underpass
Post by: Signal on July 03, 2013, 12:45:25 AM
4th St here in Charlottesville has an old 1-lane railroad underpass.
It is a two way street, so you have to stop and make sure no one is coming. It does have a sidewalk under it, mainly because the transamerican bike route 76 goes down 4th St.
It's looks to be made of wood and steel, with grates covering the spaces, stone walls underneath, and a tiny wire fence on the edge.

There's a gravel road in my area that goes down to a single set of tire tracks under a railroad overpass. I could try to get photos sometime.

The Ruston Way tunnel in Tacoma was awesome, but they tore it out a couple years ago
http://exploretacoma.com/so-long-ruston-way-tunnel-were-goin-miss-you-when-youre-gone.htm

Just a narrow, one lane tunnel with a curve. There was a sign requiring traffic to honk their horn before entering it to alert oncoming traffic, which wouldn't be able to see you on the other side. This is a fairly well travelled road, so it did, I suppose, make sense to tear out the tunnel, but it's kind of a bummer just the same.

Cyclists, especially those riding across the country, ride in the road, bro.

There's a one-lane underpass on US 11 in TN near the GA border:

https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=34.99664,-85.390364&spn=0.000006,0.00313&t=h&z=19&layer=c&cbll=34.996544,-85.390315&panoid=_cEClg0rCYP_m70xSXZyUw&cbp=12,335.91,,0,0

Also, there's an even narrower one on OLD SR 156 at Ladds, TN; but it's not streetviewed. It's so narrow that a car can barely fit through. The topo maps suggest that it wasn't bypassed until about 1982.

Horseshoe Curve in Altoona, PA has one underneath it.  The famous railroad engineering landmark has a local road pass beneath the middle of the curve.  Being the "curve" constructed in the horse and buggy age, it did not need to be that wide, but now a traffic signal has been installed to handle today's traffic demands.  However, back in the 80s, there was no signal and it was interesting to hear all the cars honk their horns while inside the underpass to warn on coming traffic of the structure being occupied.

IIRC, US 9W has one or two of these somewhere north of Kingston, NY that are signal-controled.

The one I'm most familiar with, in Fairfax County, VA, is on SR 611 near US 1 and the Occoquan River, though there are several others in the state of Virginia.

I believe it is in Saugerties.  It's where the old NY Central Westshore Line crosses over US 9W.  The signal is there because of a limited sight distance on both sides, if I remember it correctly as US 9W does an "S" curve at the crossing.

Sickletown Rd under the old original Erie Mainline in Orangetown, NY:

http://goo.gl/maps/dRIQx

The Erie up above stopped running decades ago, and with the recent proliferation of McMansions in the immediate vicinity (excuse me -- tranquil Lifestyle Communities), I'm surprised the locals haven't clamored to tear this bottleneck open.

Not far away, on a still-used portion of the same route in Spring Valley, there's another one-lane underpass on N. Pascack Rd.:

http://goo.gl/maps/W5l4o

In this instance a nearby bypass was built over the tracks to open up a through route to serve new developments.

There's even a composite warning sign at the next highway junction to the south–13 km away.

There's quite a few one-lane railroad underpasses in the Portland metro area, but most of them are little-used residential accesses; there's a couple up in Vancouver, one has been blocked off and the other is now a one-way road that provides access from an industrial area onto SR 14 eastbound.

What makes the photographed one interesting is that the area has grown and developed around it, but the underpass was never altered.  Also in Vancouver was a long viaduct that had a seven foot height restriction; the city, state and BNSF are spending quite a few bucks to demolish the viaduct and build a new, larger, taller structure.

one of the ways to best approximate following old US-66 in eastern NM is to take a one-lane underpass underneath I-40.

http://goo.gl/maps/eYSWz

that's as far as the street view car got - traveling forward jumps you onto I-40 itself.

Actually, it looks like the camera resumed recording after passing under I-40, on the northern frontage road.

NJ is filled with lots of them throughout northern NJ.  One in particular, I am kind of sad it was changed, is the one on Evergreen Road at the Northeast Corridor in Edison that was removed and replaced with a modern structure.

The one-lane underpass I encounter most often is in Newington, Virginia, just off I-95 near Exit 166. I go through there fairly frequently going to a client's office. This is a pretty recent Street View because that's a Porsche Panamera proceeding underneath:

http://goo.gl/maps/lXyW2

I'm familiar with the one froggie references in far southern Fairfax County; it has a sign directing you to sound your horn before proceeding (but the sign is fuzzy in the Street View image).

I've mentioned at least one of these before;

River Road beneath the LIRR Main Line in East Yaphank, New York:
https://maps.google.com/maps?ll=40.835278,-72.929167&q=loc:40.835278,-72.929167&hl=en&t=h&z=12

Dark Hollow Road beneath the LIRR Port Jefferson Line in East Setauket, New York:
https://maps.google.com/maps?ll=40.946111,-73.062222&q=loc:40.946111,-73.062222&hl=en&t=h&z=12

Woodville Road beneath the former Wading River Branch in Shoreham, New York:

To be honest, unless the old bridges were being reused for a bike trail, like what should be happening on River Road, I wouldn't miss them if they were replaced.

There's a one-lane underpass under I-10 in Texas somewhere in the Sonora or Ozona area.  I don't remember exactly where it is.  In that area, I-10 runs along a constructed ridge above the natural ground level.  The underpass is a concrete tunnel through that ridge.  I'd like to get a photo, but I don't remember exactly where it is.

At one time there was a very inadequate railroad underpass near Cresson.  It was one lane and had a vertical clearance of about 10 feet.  That road was rebuilt elsewhere and has a normal grade crossing now.  The rail bridge is still there, but there's no road now.  http://goo.gl/maps/74C7j

On the subject of Texas, there's also this abandoned one on the old US 77 alignment in Hillsboro;
It didn't feel wide enough for two full size cars to pass safely:
(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1209.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc395%2FBrian5561%2F07022011slr131.jpg&hash=cd493ed15d1108ce42966d1b54bcc2e732434253) (http://s1209.photobucket.com/user/Brian5561/media/07022011slr131.jpg.html)

And this early's 1900's one on Jim Cristal Rd (Old SH 24/39) in Denton County:
It predates the state highway, which was moved to the new alignment (now US 380) in 1930, which was around the time the number changed

This one in TN on OLD SR 156 at Ladds has to be the narrowest. My car barely fit through. I believe it wasn't bypassed until 1982.

It occurs to me the infamous "Bunnyman Bridge" near Clifton, Virginia, is another one-lane underpass, but since there's no outlet beyond the railroad tracks it doesn't really matter. (No Street View, but if you go to this link and turn on Photos you can find two pictures: http://goo.gl/maps/R4chm )

And, with regards to the one I took pictures of: is it possible that the street view car was too tall to go under, so they had to fold down the camera? I've been under that one quite a few times. My parents lived near there for three years before I was born (my father's final two years at UVA Law and a year at the JAG School)–the street is right where the part of Stribling Avenue maintained by the city ends and you make a left turn right after city maintenance ends. Back when they lived there it was "Stribling Avenue Extended," then during my years at the University it was called "Nob Hill Circle," and Google Maps now shows no name at all.

When I-25 was built across southern Colorado in 1959, what is now Exit 108 was basically a ranch road exit. A concrete culvert was used to allow traffic to pass under the freeway. By the 2000s, this had been connected to Purcell Blvd., a 2-lane road connecting the community of Pueblo West - which didn't exist when the highway was originally built -  to I-25. The original underpass is still there, and I have heard of no plans to upgrade it at this location. Most of the traffic is eastbound, but there is a race track on the other side of the freeway, and when that lets out it can be difficult for eastbound traffic to find a gap to enter. It's also scary coming off I-25 southbound, since you can't see a car coming out of the culvert until you're in the roadway.

There are indeed two of them, on both ends of the one place where 9W is east of the tracks, following a very substandard route. It's as if NYSDOT intended to construct a new 9W on the west side to 55 MPH standards and never got around to it.

One I grew up with is Hobson Rd. in Wayne, NJ, also a candidate for lowest clearance.

There is a one-lane underpass under a railroad in Franklin, TN.  This is just outside the city limits on SR 252.  There is actually a blind 90-degree turn on both the southbound and northbound approach.  There is no way to know someone is coming until you get to the turn.  Yes I said that this is on a state highway with a county population of around 200,000 or so.

Great example!  Interesting how one side has an "UNDERPASS ONE LANE" sign while the other has a "ONE LANE TUNNEL" sign.

Wow, I remember that one, from about the 1970's. Once we drove under it while a freight train was passing over - my mother was terrified. I, of course, thought it was very cool!

If we're talking state highways, NY 164 crosses under the Beacon Secondary line at a one lane underpass twice in rapid succession. Neither is signalized but traffic counts on the road do not warrant such.

Then there's this one (https://maps.google.com/?ll=41.374949,-73.641597&spn=0.002037,0.003868&t=h&z=18&layer=c&cbll=41.374949,-73.641597&panoid=45lwZFiUBoeJexM-SKU3yA&cbp=12,268.17,,0,4.24) under the Harlem mainline which is decidedly narrow but on a minor sideroad that's mostly not paved:

That was fun to drive through!

Just like Steve pointed out, its at the ends of where US 9W is east of the tracks.  However, I was wrong the location is way north of Saugerties in Catskill, NY.

Although striped for two lanes, the underpass itself is no more than 20 feet wide. I've seen enough 18-wheelers on 9W to know that this is effectively a single lane. Not even worth trying to get two cars under there, just because there's so little sight distance.

I see a clearing at the first link on the north side of the bridge. Is this part of some effort by NYSDOT to realign the road and build a bridge over the tracks? Because in both cases it seems like it would be possible.

These are common all over the northeast of course, so here are just a couple that seem unique to me:

This one's very cool, because the one-lane footpath/private driveway shares an underpass with a creek.

And the winner: https://www.google.com/maps?ll=43.23598,-78.340502&spn=0.013085,0.026414&cbp=12,172.7,,0,3.24&layer=c&panoid=3Bql_HNKjMG0H_7a2c7B3w&cbll=43.236051,-78.340508&dg=opt&t=m&z=16

We've got a traffic-light-controlled one-lane underpass in Rockford, Illinois. While it's wider than one lane, the angle of the road and the Union Pacific railroad tracks was too acute (obtuse, if you're looking at it the other way LOL) for two cars to pass through at one time.  20th Street makes an 'S-curve under the UP tracks before crossing the Canadian National railroad tracks.

Here's approaching the underpass: http://goo.gl/maps/B0rPW

I do not know if this counts, but the tunnel under the front of the Philadephia Museum of Art, is one lane.  I do not know if you could consider it an underpass, but it is one lane.

I think the point of this thread is to list 1-lane underpasses that carry two directions of traffic, or are similarly sketchy. The tunnel at the Museum of Art seems (to me anyway) more like a freeway ramp - which there are plenty of.

I recently ran into a one-lane bridge over water when I was riding around in the Poconos with my friend Will a couple of months ago.  Unfortunately, it rained on our parade, so I didn't get any pictures.

And this early's 1900's one on Jim Cristal Rd (Old SH 24/39) in Denton County:
It predates the state highway, which was moved to the new alignment (now US 380) in 1930, which was around the time the number changed

Yeah I did not think it was an underpass, but more of a tunnel! However, even though I have not driven through it, just looking at it on GSV makes me feel clostrophobic.

Here's underneath the bridge: http://goo.gl/maps/wCDK9

I got a couple of photos of it back in February.

The approach, crossing some railroad tracks:

I spotted one on Lungren Road in Lenni, Pennsylvania while trying to track down the former Pennsylvania Railroad Chester Creek Branch. My first instinct would be to suggest widening it to two lanes, but they've got the West Chester Heritage Railroad using that, and I suspect they'd want to keep things as is.

In Jamestown, PA on Route 58, there's a one-lane arch bridge under an old railroad track. When the track was removed, the plan was to remove the underpass. But the locals felt that it was a symbol of the town, and were successful in saving it. It's one lane, and heading into Jamestown, requires you to stop at a stop sign that you can't see what's coming from left or right.

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Jamestown,+PA+16134/@41.484345,-80.444121,3a,66.8y,15.94h,88.38t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1shMqFgY39TiHLeBbAuhzaGg!2e0!4m2!3m1!1s0x8833b5742fb20795:0xc0260095b9a620e1

Don't want to derail thread, but what's 'one lane' ??

We had a local bridge here, (nuked a few years ago) that was 22 feet wide (I measured it!!) and it was signed as a caution one lane bridge.  There was even a court case on it several years ago after an accident and one driver was cited for failing to yield half the roadway, and I believe he prevailed since it was 'one lane' and the accident was therefore both parties fault regardless of where on the bridge (left/right) they were at the moment of impact.  (this was 40 years ago, hope I am recalling it correctly)

==however==

as built, it was originally a 2 lane bridge (at the same width) from the 20s to the 50s.

So, it's signed as one lane, we have a court ruling relying on the signs, but as built, it's a 2 lane bridge.

Where do we stand on this ??  Original intent, or judicial activism run amok ??

:wow:

It looks like a pedestrian tunnel. What's with the traffic signal, though?

It's actually not a pedestrian tunnel, but a road tunnel that connects residential streets. The stoplight is for making sure that only one direction of traffic uses the tunnel at any one time.

I can't remember where it is precisely, and cannot find a picture either, but I recall a travelogue video of and around the St. Lawrence Seaway and I'd swear I recall a 'teeny tiny' highway tunnel under it with a big old freighter gliding by above.  Dramatic picture, but I can't recall if the tunnel was one lane or not, but compared to the scale of the levees and the ship above, it looked microscopic.

:wow:

Yeah, that's right here (http://right%20here). No StreetView, but a quick Google image search for "Eisenhower Locks Tunnel" will bring up the view you're thinking of.

Appreciate that video.

Saves me the trip of going there.

Well, that makes sense as a road tunnel.

That one is pretty narrow, but it really never bothered me. It also doesn't carry two directions of traffic so it doesn't technically qualify.

I believe this is a one lane underpass in Silver Creek, NY. I'll have to check it out myself.

There is a one-lane underpass of US 101 at the Arizona Beach state park (Curry County) so that one can access the beach.  The access road is gravel.

Rick

That's a state park now? I remember when it was a privately owned RV park. That place was awesome, one of our favorite places to camp on the coast. Too bad it's closed now. At least you can still visit it for day use, I'll have to check it out sometime. It would be nice if they added some camp sites back there, I'd totally make a trip out of it for nostalgia purposes.

There is a one-lane underpass under a railroad in Franklin, TN.  This is just outside the city limits on SR 252.  There is actually a blind 90-degree turn on both the southbound and northbound approach.  There is no way to know someone is coming until you get to the turn.  Yes I said that this is on a state highway with a county population of around 200,000 or so.

http://goo.gl/maps/R3g3g (http://goo.gl/maps/R3g3g)

This one is even more compounded by the fact that Clovercroft Road is "multiplexed" onto TN 252, if you will, through this area, which is an important east-west road linking Franklin to Nolensville.  Almost worthy of a state route designation itself.

TN 252/Wilson Pike pretty much parallels the CSX railroad for most of its length and, I believe, used to have a total of (4) of these one-lane underpass crossings, and is now down to two.  The one b/w TN 253/Concord Road and Crockett Road in Brentwood was replaced sometime in the mid-80's I'm guessing.  And the one further south near Ravenwood High School was replaced (and Wilson Pike realigned from west to east of the railroad) I'm thinking in the 00's, which replaced a wooden one-lane underpass as I recall.

The other one that remains is about a couple miles south of the one mentioned above, and can be found here:

Not a strictly-speaking-one-lane bridge, but this one is narrow enough to where I've seen cars stop to let vehicles through one at a time:

I don't think this one has been posted yet, but there are two on US 9W near the Ulster/Greene county line.

First: https://goo.gl/maps/HE3VztLEacq

Second: https://goo.gl/maps/Jf18ZTFVgEJ2

While the first one is technically 2 lanes, signals on either side only allow one direction under the bridge at a time. Second one is definitely one lane. And yes, these are on a US route in a state that typically keeps their stuff to pretty high standards.
