Nontechnical starting guide for lurkers

I have been following the saga since the very beginning. I have been meaning to do something very similar to this for quite sometime. This whole thing has been super interesting to follow along. However, I can't really be of use for any coding help.

However, now that I see draft maps being made, is there a simple how-to so that I can get a jump start on my personal project?
