Title: Where have you folks been all my life?
Post by: Paper Maps Forever on December 22, 2020, 12:03:51 PM
Hey all. New guy here. Located in Central PA, just outside of Harrisburg. I happened upon some of your content while researching history of the ADC Map Co.

I have been a map geek from the time I saw my first US atlas, way back when I was 7 or 8 years old. Fast forward to present day, my map habit has grown to owning some 3500 or so maps, atlases, etc.

Not allowing my habit to focus solely on maps, I also have a voracious appetite for the history of geography in the US. Highway re-alignments, designation changes, bridges, tunnels, viaducts, etc.

Collecting retired license plates and road signs is another way of getting my US Highway 'fix'.

I am thrilled to have found this place and cannot wait to spend hours sifting through the content of this forum, and, hopefully gain boatloads of knowledge.

Cheers!!

Amusingly I recall using AAroads for years and not realizing until about late 2015 that it had a road forum.

Welcome!

ADC maps were my go to maps for years mainly because of the accuracy. Even the foldouts (their VA foldouts were often more accurate than the VDOT Officials).

Welcome from Southwest Missouri!

I had discovered this forum some 6-7 years ago, but forgot about it up until about a year and a half ago, where I then registered for an account.

3500 or so maps, atlases, etc.

Whoa. I probably own about 1% of that figure.

Anyway, welcome to the forum. I think I discovered it about 6 years ago, after it came up as one of the top results to a Google search. I lurked for probably 3 years before finally joining. It has become one of my greatest time sinks...whoops

Greetings from Northeast Florida!

Even I wasn't aware of this forum until my last year of grade school.

For more information, you might want to use Google Groops and read the misc.transport.road (MTR) Usenet group. A lot of us who have been around for awhile first got into this by participating in that group. As Usenet withered away, that group followed suit. MTR gets hardly any traffic at all these days. I don't even read it as often as I used to.

MTR was neat for what it was at the time, but it sucked if you wanted actual meaningful discussions. You had to read around all the noise of spammers and unchecked trolls that were just there to be unpleasant. If you had an ISP that offered Usenet service, you could use real software with a killfile that would let you filter it somewhat, but if your ISP didn't (mine never did) you were stuck with Google Groups, which had no such tools.

Welcome from So Cal.
I like the east coast ADC maps; I have the Metro Philadelphia book.  Clean, sharp cartography.
