It's been hinted at, but I'd love to see people come back into our chat room. There should be at least a few people in there most nights. Click on the "CHAT" text in the menu at the top of the forum, and here's a direct link (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/chat/flashchat.php).
Now that chat is back, we ought to start having TRIVIA NIGHTS again. I think once a week proved to be too much, so let's say once a month. This thread will be used to update results of trivia nights and announce new ones. So watch this space and see when we're ready to start one up!
We need hosts! I'd like to have a trivia night soon - maybe even this week. I think in the past we've chosen midweek nights, Tues-Thurs, as a time when most of us are around and online. The format in the past has been roughly 50-60 questions, one question per state (more or less), Canadian provinces, national, even international, whatever you want to throw on. It takes about 5 hours to put together a list of good questions - some easy, some hard. Who wants to volunteer?
While I wait for a volunteer, let's get the night established. Poll open.
QuoteRespond with the NUMBER OF THE QUESTION to ring in.
QuoteCLOSEST GUESS QUESTIONS: Respond directly with your guess.
Those two things could potentially overlap and cause a spam message- maybe preface closest guess questions with a number sign or something?

It starts to get pretty tricky. The occasional spam message may happen, but the workaround could start to get more complicated than just letting it go.
Is there any trivia software that can be downloaded? The chat room isn't a very good venue for trivia.
I see a lot of votes for Saturdays and Sundays, but truth is, I and many people are often busy or away. So, without further adieu, our first trivia night will be this Wednesday, February 13, at 9 PM Eastern Time. See you there?
(When you get in the chat room, make sure you enter "Trivia!")
road chat is empty. anyone wanna help me test it out?

to clarify: go to the drop down box at the top, and select the room marked "Trivia".
typing, literally, "Trivia!" does nothing other than make one look like a fool. trust me; I just did precisely that. :sombrero:
I'll be on the road beginning at 4:00 tomorrow - I'll try to get in for a bit but I scheduled a very long drive to end in southern MISS (from central IL) on Thursday so I'm getting a head start and getting past the Quads early and sleep.

I'd like to congratulate NE2 as the winner of our inaugural trivia chat, with 29 points! (That's a lot.) He really cleaned up on his Minneapolis-St. Paul freeway knowledge. Right behind him was corco with 27 points, and to show how much of a race it was, next was Dr Frankenstein with just 7 points. Props to ZMapper, PennDOTFan, Stalin, Alex, and mgk920 for joining us and all finishing with a positive number of points as well - no one in the negative, that's a first!
If you'd like to host next time, please RSVP your spot here. I'm happy to give some pointers, but you can play with the format as you like. I'll tweak the rules here shortly based on lessons learned today. Also, we may have solved the spam message.
Had Québec not been in the trivia, I would have been deep in the negative.
Now I need to work on my reaction time. I would've gotten a better score with that. :p
I'd be interested in hosting the next one if that's alright.

Thanks! Because I had today off, I was able to write up all of the questions for the next one. Since doing it on a Wednesday seemed to work out well, and everyone seemed to be in favor of doing them once a month, how about the next trivia night be Wednesday, March 13?

Shoot, I can't do the 13th. And I missed the first one too...
oops
Oops is right, I apologize. There didn't seem to be much interest in having it last night, as there weren't a lot of people on the chat. How about next Wednesday, the 20th? I'll put up a reminder on Tuesday.
that'd be good- I totally forgot
I'll put it in the headlines.
I wasn't available; but I'll be on Wednesday.
I might be able to on wednesday... I'll see how it goes

15 minutes until corco's comeback chance.
Okay, thanks to all who showed up tonight! NE2 won again with 20 points, followed by Steve with 14, corco with 12, Molandfreak and Laura Bianca with 5, Dr. Frankenstein with 4, and Dougtone and MDOTFanFB with 2.
I plan to host next time. Plan on tricky questions. Preliminary date: April 17.
You might want to change the announcement at the top of the forum.
Reminder: trivia this Wednesday at 21:00.
Your questions are going down. DOWN
I now have 46 questions, though I may come up with a few more. Not all states are represented, and there are some non-state categories. Questions are not ass-hard but are not buzzer races.
You should make the last four questions ass hard

By the way, a two-lane Interstate (one lane each way) runs on the east side of this national park. When you get it, you'll realize why this was the best night ever.
I am intrigued, as I thought by definition an Interstate Highway was never a single lane in one direction. I started to think of the Palisades "Interstate" Parkway, but I am sure you are craftier than that...
My answer would be Denali Nat'l Park

Indeed, unsigned Interstate A-4 (signed Alaska state route 3) includes several miles within park boundaries just south of the main park entrance (no entry stations or fees until you leave the highway for the main entrance), plus additional mileage right on the other side of the Nenana River from the park.
Anyone up for June 5? I can host June 5, but I need to know who will be available that night so that it will give me time to prepare some questions.
As for the questions, do they need to be road related or not?

Yeah, this is highway trivia. You should come to the next one before committing to anything and see what it's like.
Sure. I'll check it out.
Here are the questions from when I hosted. Note that these are somewhat harder than the norm.
1. ODDITIES.
This state has more than 15 separate splits of U.S. Highways into business and bypass routes with no mainline.
2. SOUTH CAROLINA.
Before the construction of I-95, this alternate route was part of the shortest chain of U.S. Highways from Savannah to Florence.
3. OHIO.
Although the Pikes Peak Ocean to Ocean Highway originally followed the National Road through Columbus, it was moved north in the early 1920s to bypass the city. The new route is now mostly this U.S. Highway.
4. MICHIGAN.
US 223 was originally part of this longer route.
5. KANSAS-MISSOURI.
Trfwy stands for this.
6. VIRGINIA.
In December 2010, the Commonwealth Railway began operating a new 5-mile mainline, including 3 miles in the median of this highway.
7. DAKOTAS.
These three highway numbers exist in or near the capitals of both Dakotas. (not a multi-part question)

17. ODDITIES.
Southbound drivers on one block of Huntington Avenue in Newport News, VA are simultaneously following both directions of this route.
18. UNITED STATES.
Three-digit Interstate A is cosigned with two-digit U.S. Route B. U.S. Route A ends at a former alignment of Interstate B. What are A and B?
19. TOLL ROADS.
Not counting tolled express lanes, these are the only two tolled freeways in the U.S. that cross without any sort of interchange (though two ramps are scheduled to open by 2015).
20. ALABAMA.
This state highway connects I-65 to US 29 en route to Pensacola.
21. KENTUCKY.
The US 62-68 bypass northwest of Maysville originally had this state highway number.
22. CONNECTICUT-MASSACHUSETTS.
I-395 replaced Route 52, but mostly parallels this surface route.
23. VIRGINIA.
In 1923, Virginia added this number to its single-digit state routes; only the pre-1923 SR 5 continues to have its post-1923 designation.
24. MISSOURI.
If US 66 had remained 60, 60 would have been this.
25. UNITED STATES.
4 is the lowest number carried by both a current Interstate and a current U.S. Route. What is the highest?
26. TOLL ROADS.
In 1795, these two cities were connected by one of America's first turnpikes, which charged tolls until 1917.
27. WASHINGTON, D.C.
This unnumbered freeway could be I-366, but the speed limit is only 30 mph.
28. DUMB QUESTIONS.
The Ak-Sar-Ben Bridge carried US 6 between Iowa and this state.
29. WISCONSIN.
US 110 was replaced by a state route of the same number in the 1930s. Since then, the construction of this parallel freeway has resulted in the state giving most of former US 110 to Winnebago County.
30. UTAH-NEVADA.

The last two questions where each route gives someone one point makes it so someone could show up at the end and win by getting that one series correct. If multi-part questions are included with more than three answers, they earn a percentage based credit. So if there are 12 answers, and you get all 12, you get 3 or 4 points, and if you get just 3 or 4 out of the 12, you get 1 point.

Someone sounds like he wants to host! The original trivia format was established well over a decade ago in IRC chat. That's where we figured out not to give questions in ABC order by state - people were using atlases and just turning the page. That's also where the multi-part questions at the end came from. You could be down 12 to -1 and still have a chance just by being there. While people may or may not like it, it's a "classic" element of the game. Point values can also double for the last 10 questions, or you can have more bonuses.
One idea: Instead of allowing the original answered to list all of them, everyone who buzzes in gets ONE answer. Then you go back to the first person and repeat. Once you pass, you're out of the "ring" of answerers.
Just throwing out out there, but I'd love to host at some point. I haven't participated yet because I've never been in the right place at the right time, and I'm currently doing all my internet via smartphone, but I'll try hard to make an appearance next month.

How about, since Molandfreak indicated he might want to host next time, come join us, get a taste for it, and then you can host after that?

I like the concept of people buzzing in for those multi-part answers, so that more get the opportunity to participate in those multi-part questions. Plus it might speed things up, so we don't have 15-20 minutes per one question. I enjoyed the game, but it was already around 1130 when it ended.

What time?
You're going down, awesome sheeples. (And I'm going to sleep now and counting sheeples.)
Aw lame, i have to go to Missoula tonight.
Important: I am sick with a fever. Trivia will be Friday the 30th.
Aw lame, I'll be en route to Lethbridge on the 30th. I'll live though.
You can't bring your computer or phone with you and get online? If someone else is in the car, he can drive while you do trivia. If you can't seem to get online, you could stop at a restaurant with Wi-Fi where you can do trivia and dinner at the same time.
(By the way, I won't be there because it seems to be adult chat, and I'm 14 years old. I also would end up with a negative score since most of what I know is New England, and I'm not good with the rest of the country.)

Trivia isn't as vulgar as the normal roads chat; believe me, I was 17 when I started chatting in that room.
Also, you never know what questions are on there. I encourage you to try your luck on friday, you seem to know a lot.

Yeah, I'm driving from Deer Lodge to Lethbridge non-stop after work stopping only in Great Falls to swap for a rental car and have to get up at 6 AM the next morning so A) I'm driving and B) I'm already not going to get to Lethbridge until 11 PM or so- detouring for a couple hours for trivia isn't gonna happen.

The chat is uncensored. I'll come out and say that we didn't know much about you, but we didn't think you were actually who you said you were. If you are, my and our apologies, and we'll watch our language more when you're around.
Steve and Corco, are you able to come next wednesday? I remember it was postponed last month because Corco and I couldn't come.

Wednesday is okay, as is any day that's not going to have massive amounts of people doing Labor Day things. So let's plan for something next week.
Next week sounds fine. I'll be in Las Vegas until Labor Day, so I wouldn't have been able to make Friday the 30th.
Resolved: The new date for trivia is Saturday, September 7. 20:00 central seems like the average time, so I'll go with that.
Two hours until poo.
My google docs recently crashed. I've managed to restore 26 questions, but it still may be a short night. Is this ok or should I postpone again?
Oh shit, I forgot it was tonight. Nah, go ahead and do it and then make up what you can as you go along. I'm going to the store right now to get some beer, flipz, ice, and chew and I should be there on time
Ok sweet, I'll do it!
I'll try to be there.
Heh, I read that as 8 eastern, so I'm back with plenty of time to spare!
It looks like we're going to have a good turnout tonight Moland...so I hope you're working on resurrecting lost questions!

I think it's most likely you mean EDT. 9pm EST is an hour after 9pm EDT. If you just mean whatever Eastern Time happens to be in effect, just say ET and you won't risk making an error.

Oh. Yeah, I could host if nobody else wants. We should make sure the new chat is precise enough.
There are some strange laggy moments, but it doesn't seem to have trouble with large numbers of users, it just lags randomly. Haven't figured that out, needs testing.
With the new chat, hosting will be much more difficult, given that there isn't any reasonable personalization like changing the text color.
In fact, how you change the text color in chat is exactly the same as how you change it in the forum.
There is actually! Go to settings, check the box that says "persist font color" and then select your font color. It even makes the tags go away
The font color for your name stays the same though, so that's lame

I would be interested to know what kind of internet connection that everybody who took part in the chat tonight had. I only have DSL and I was lagging like a motherfucker. I started to play trivia, but I would hit the enter key as soon as I read a question (and I read extremely fast) and by the time my X got to the screen the "first" person to ring had already been called on. This chat is a shit venue for trivia. Is there a freeware trivia program that we could get?

IRC is still a thing.
Really though, I'm pretty sure people's connection speeds aren't a factor. Network
latency (not bandwidth) may be a factor, but so could a number of client-side issues.
If I hadn't been lagging I would have come in second, as I got 19 correct answers.

*Something* is causing lag. Whether it's on my end, aaroads' end, or somewhere in the middle, some of our internet connections just aren't as fast as others.

This was a problem on IRC as well. The last iteration of chat was the only one where it seemed to be less of an issue, but that had security holes that could hide a whale.

I've studied the IRC protocol, and if you're dealing with a single server (rather than a network with multiple servers) and that server isn't so busy as to put a strain on its resources, IRC should have minimal latency. I don't think any other platform which relies on TCP could improve on that.

I tried once. Even though I don't know a lot about roads compared to other people in the whole country (I only know New England and New York for the most part), I came in second with 6 points. I had to leave early, too. I never lost any points for a wrong answer, which probably helped.

I've encountered the same problem as you, Bugo, and think its because people start buzzing in before they read the question! (I don't know enough about roads as a whole to do that.)

I would love to, except I have a
giant feeling that mine would SUCK. If someone wanted to duo with me that knows what the hell they are doing, we could maybe work something out. The majority of my questions would be obtained from randomly Googling stuff. If I get enough demand, I'll take the risk of making an ass out of myself, but just know that it will be sloppy. Or maybe not? Who knows.
I think I'd like to try hosting a trivia night too. Perhaps I can work with Zeffy. :)
EDIT: I thought the rule was whoever won last would host the next trivia. I guess if we're doing it this way then it doesn't apply anymore?

Well the problem is that the last winner... well... doesn't visit here anymore. Oh, and I'd love to duo with you. Would be fun! You could add Canadian stuff into the mix which I'm TOTALLY clueless about.
I knew that, but what I meant was that if we can schedule multiple months in advance, then the winner won't necessarily host the next one anymore.
We're still doing Wednesdays right? I'll be free until class starts. :)
I'd be interested in hosting...especially now that SPUI is out of the question. I'll go so far as to admit that he made it a lot less fun in the trivias-of-years-ago.

I believe he already is--he just hasn't come back yet.
It can be any day, not just Wednesdays or even midweek. It can be 8 instead of 9. There's really flexibility here. Also, the only reasons we've done "winner hosts next time" are a) NE2 can't win every time and b) that way SOMEONE feels obligated to host. I'd rather have a series of hosts.
I could, maybe, if I could think of the questions. (And if I'm free that night...)
Last time I hosted a game night, no one was drunk by the time the night was over (except that one aunt).
From this, I can conclude that my abilities to host a trivia night would be poor and therefore I must be counted out.

I would definitely be interested in playing this sometime.
Is there ever going to be another trivia night?
Probably, if someone decides they can host one and feels like doing so.
So trivia night is never coming back?

LET'S HAVE SOME TRIVIA!!!
8:30 PM EDT, Wednesday, April 18 - sorry, I can't do Thursdays.
Come into chat (see the handy link on top of this page) and let's take a nostalgia trip while making fun of each other's stupidity. ALL are welcome.
You're doing it on Thursday in my (real) time zone :sombrero:. However, as it is scheduled at 2:30 AM CEST tonight, I obviously cannot take part as I'm sleeping (In fact 8:30 PM CEST April 18 was about 40 minutes ago).
I'll have my regularly scheduled strategy board gaming. No joy.
APRIL 18 TRIVIA RESULTS
corco is the winner (as often) with 25 points! He should host next time.

cjk374 = 1
roadguy2 = 1

Look forward to next time!

Yes. You have to buzz in before you can answer. You get 1 point for a correct answer (the final few questions of the most recent game were worth 2), while you lose 1 for an incorrect answer. Read this (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=8741.0) thread for more details.

Too bad the most favorable dates for me to join have passed. Between August 9 and 15 each year my hometown's festivals are held, and during those dates I stay awaken until later, so I could get to a 8:30 PM EDT (2:30 AM the next day CEST) start.

Wednesday, September 12 at 8:30 PM EDT
Similar format and rules to previous nights. Come one, come all!
As a reminder, trivia is being held Wednesday night at 8:30 PM. Same format as before, but with my own twist on this thing.
Rules for tonight will generally follow the rules set by Alps (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=8741.0). That being said, I'm going to add some house rules and additional items:
- There will be 50 questions, with most states plus Canada and Mexico being represented. Some states will not have a dedicated question, while there will also be national questions.
- We're taking a 15 minute break halfway through (after question 25).
- The second half will be "double jeopardy" to keep things interesting. Double points for correct answers, but also 2 points lost for wrong answers. Double Jeopardy ONLY applies to single-answer questions that were not closest guess (questions that would normally be 1 point).
- Closest guess questions will have bonus points for being either exact or within a certain range. The exact bonus will depend on the question.
- I'm going to emphasize the "don't blurt out" thing. There will be zero-penalty bonus questions for some questions. Person who answers correctly gets first guess.
Alright...results from tonight's trivia!
Alps - 19 points. Started slow, but came back to win it at the end.
NE2 - 17 points. He was hampered by incorrect guesses.
pianocello - 13 points. Didn't answer a ton of questions, but almost always answered correctly. Closest guess questions were almost exact or exact in most cases.
US 89 and paulthemapguy - 11 points. Not a bad showing.
Laura - 3 points. She showed up right at the end, but got no questions wrong. If she showed up earlier, she could probably win this thing.
The full list of questions and answers will go in a separate post.

That was my mistake. That being said, I would have accepted 35W as an answer, as I would have double-checked.
^ Steve, all of 77 is a freeway. Where the freeway ends in Apple Valley, 77 also ends.
Alright, that was fun last night. Since no one has claimed next trivia yet, I thought I could host next time. Next trivia will be:
Wednesday, October 24th; 8:30 PM ET (and 6:30 PM MT -- that time zone needs some recognition)
AARoads Chatroom (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/chat1/)
It will be the same format as previous trivia nights have used, though small changes may be announced later. As always, come one come all! Last time was fun, but I’m hoping we can get some more people.
This is your friendly reminder that TRIVIA NIGHT will be held this Wednesday in the AARoads Chatroom (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/chat1/) at 6:30 PM MDT (that's 8:30 PM EDT for those of you spoiled eastern-timers who have never had a need to convert time zones).
Again, rules will follow the format used in previous trivia nights (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=8741.0).
I'm going to add this note, because I don't think it has been specified clearly for previous trivia nights: you can show up late and still play.
Most of the high-value questions are towards the end of the trivia.
T minus
49 MINUTES until
TRIVIA NIGHT. Again, it will be in the
chat room, which you can access from this link. (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/chat1/)Rules for tonight will follow the standard rules (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=8741.0), with the following exceptions/clarifications:
- You can arrive late and still play. You can also arrive on time and leave halfway through if you need.
- The "double jeopardy" format that cl94 used last time will be in play again. In short: questions asked in the second half will be worth two points, as opposed to the normal one. That applies to penalties for missed questions as well. However: the double jeopardy rule will not apply to bonus questions, or questions that are part of a multiple-answer.
- There are a few multiple-answer bonuses towards the end of this trivia. These will work just like any other bonuses, with the player who guessed right getting the first guess at the bonus with no penalty. However, after the first correct bonus answer, there will be a point penalty if you miss. That goes for everyone, including the original guesser.
- Don't look up anything on a question until it is over. Some of the bonus questions in tonight's trivia will be ruined if you look up the answer to the initial question.
- Don't blurt out random stuff related to a question. It may well be the subject of a bonus question.
That is all. I'm hoping we get a good turnout tonight.

Okay, what do people think: Are US 266 and 138 longer than their parent routes because their parent routes are 0 miles?
I think the lengths of US 66 and US 38 are undefined because they do not exist, and that this is not the same thing as a route which exists but is 0 miles in length.

Also, damn it, I forgot about trivia night again. Oh well. :-P
I haven't made a trivia night yet, but I'd like to see how bad I'd do at this (why I'm in a meteorology major). Since fall term is over on Monday, or Tuesday, I'll have 33 or 34 days off before heading back so selfishly, that would be a good time, but I don't want the schedule revived around me. I just would like to know when the next one is (since I don't know much about this).

As already argued back in the day, US 138, 166, 266 and 199 could be correct answers as they could be considered to be longer than their respective parents, as they don't exist anymore.
I'd like a trivia night to be scheduled some time from August 9 to 14 both included. I explained why I could get to one during that time frame last year.

Massachusetts Name the tunnels that carry MA 1A under Boston Harbor. Sumner Tunnel, Callahan Tunnel
Minor correction. 1A southbound into Boston still follows the Sumner Tunnel, but 1A northbound out of Boston now follows the Ted Williams Tunnel. This is because, since the O'Neill Tunnel was completed, there is no longer a direct connection between I-93/US 1 northbound and the Callahan Tunnel. The Callahan Tunnel is signed as 1A for clarity, because there is no direct connection between I-93/US 1 southbound and the Williams Tunnel.
Is there a route log that backs up that assertion?
^ No. But at the same time, the latest MassDOT road inventory GIS files (end of 2018) don't even call the Sumner Tunnel part of MA 1A.
Unfortunately, the road inventory files only show the primary route along a concurrency.
Ok, but to me that means that the idea that 1A runs along I-90 is incorrect.
Just sounds like MassDOT doesn't know where 1A goes, or just assumes the ramps to and from the tunnels are good enough for 1A to hit US 1 and I-93.

I read MST as Mystery Science Theater, as in Mystery Science Theater 3000.
Alternatively, MST also stands for the Portuguese language abbreviation for Brazil's Landless Workers Movement, Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST).
See, there are more important things that MST stands for, besides squabbling over time zones.

As long as we're allowed to change forum settings to our own time zones, how can there be any sort official time zone?
Mine's set to Pacific/24 hr, so the above time (6:30 PM MST) is doubly worthless. But I would need to convert from EST as well.
But we need it to be light out during trivia time. Think of the children!

As a reminder, in order to celebrate the life of the AARoads Chatroom as we know it, there will be one last trivia night this Wednesday night (time is above). It will follow the same general format as the previous two trivia nights, but with a few minor adjustments of my own.
time is 8:30 EST
Trivia will be tonight at 6:30 PM MST (8:30 EST), in the AARoads Chat Room (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/chat1). Feel free to convert to whatever time zone you identify with, as long as it isn't UTC. If chat observes UTC, well...we'll deal with that if we have to.
Rules for tonight are as follows:
- There will be 50 questions. Most US states will be represented, but there will also be a few general US and international questions.
- After each question is posted, there will be a 30 second period to respond. To respond to a question, PM the host directly with your answer. Only your first guess will be counted. If you blurt out a correct response (i.e. don't PM), you will receive a 2 point deduction.
- If nobody has guessed correctly after 30 seconds, there will be another 30 second period to respond where everybody may submit a second guess. If there are still no correct responses after this, we will move on to the next question.
- In general, correct answers will receive 2 points. Wrong answers will get a ½ point deduction.
- Closest-guess questions: for these, the question will also include a range of possible answers. Any answers within this range will receive full credit for a correct response. The person who guesses closest to the correct response will receive one bonus point, and an exact answer is worth another bonus point. There are no point deductions on closest guess questions.
- Multiple-answer questions: for questions with more than one correct answer, the question will state how many correct responses there are, and you are free to make up to that many guesses in your response. However, any incorrect responses will still receive the standard ½-point deduction. After time is up, any correct responses will be announced, and there will be another 30-second period to guess any remaining answers. This will continue until either a) all correct responses have been given, or b) there have been two 30-second periods with no correct answers.
- Bonus questions: occasionally, there will be a bonus question relating to the previous question. These work similarly to a standard question, except that on the first round of guessing, bonus questions are open only to those who guessed the original question correctly and there is no deduction for an incorrect guess. If there are no correct answers given in the first round, the second round will be open to everyone but with a standard ½-point deduction.
- Unless directly contradicted by something above, the standard trivia rules (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=8741.msg200858#msg200858) will be in effect. One aspect I'd like to especially emphasize though, because apparently we have had issues with this in the past: using any resources beyond your own head (such as Google Maps) is considered cheating.
That is all. I'm hoping for a good turnout as we bid farewell to Chat.
EDIT: Because EST is popular! :bigass: --sso

That's really cool. I was thinking that the shields might have had slightly different shades of grey or black or white, but the text photo you have in that link definitely seals the deal.
Unfortunately, Tacoma no longer has any US routes running through it, and hasn't for decades, so I'm sure those colored route shields are
long gone.

Roadgeek Adam's Roads Bar Trivia
Wednesday, April 15, 2020, 7:32 p.m.
AARoads chat, in whatever form it will be on April 15.
There will be posts upcoming on rules and formats as we get closer.
Quote from: Roadgeek Adam on March 24, 2020, 06:03:29 PM
Wednesday, April 15, 2020, 7:32 p.m.
That's 5:32 pm real time. :sombrero:
So the full rules and format is definitely a bit of a different take from previous trivias. I have a friend in Corning, New York who is a DJ and does bar trivia and I like that style a bit more. (I have partaken in bar trivia). So the format is going to be fun.
There are many basic rules and one I'll have to explain a bit further down below.
a) There are
56 questions.
b) There will be 6 rounds and a final J! / wager round for question 56.
c) The scoring system will be like this:
c1) Round 1 - 5 points (10 questions)
c2) Round 2 - 10 points (10 questions)
c3) Round 3 - 15 points (10 questions)
c4) Round 4 - 20 points (10 questions)
c5) Round 5 - 25 points (10 questions)
c6) Round 6 - 30 points (5 questions)
c7) Round 7 - Wager (1 question)
d) There are multiple answer and range questions.
e) 34 US states, 6 Canadian provinces, 1 US pseudo-territory, and 6 countries are represented in the questions.
f) This is not an open notes quizzer. You have your brains and your strong brains alone in answering the questions.
g) Each question except for 3 about to explain is going to be 30-32 seconds. There will be breaks of 2 minutes between R1-R2, R2-R3 and so on except for R6-7 where wagers will be PMed to me.
h) Now, this is the tough one. There will be 3 questions spread out around the game that test your concepts of logic. There is a British game show named
Only Connect that airs on BBC2. I have attached a copy of an episode for you to get the idea.
Simply put, there will be questions:
h1) I will give you 1 of 4 clues every 15 seconds. You have to tell me what the common bond is between the 4 clues.
h2) I will give you 1 of 3 clues every 15 seconds. You will have to tell me the 4th. (No need to explain the connection, but I need the 4th)
h3) I will give you 4 different phrases every 15 seconds. You will notice they are all missing vowels. I have also rearranged the consonants around a bit so they may not match the words. You will have 60 seconds to give me all 4 full phrases.
If I gave you the connecting wall we'd be here all night.
i) There will be no penalties for wrong answers except for question no. 56.
This will be fun to host. I may never get to host again, so I'm going full-blast on this one.
Remember, April 15, 2020 (a Wednesday) at 7:32 pm.

h2) Same
h3) The consonants will be in order, but the spaces will vary.
After talking with Steve and others. I will probably host a dummy round on April 8 at 8 pm of the 3 question styles in the video above. Seems fair to be prepared.
Heh, Only Connect is one of the shows I watch semi-regularly when across the pond. I like the sound of this trivia night. "Find the link" or "complete the series", so just getting lucky won't help you as much.

How long is trivia night normally?
I try to keep mine to 2-2.5 hours by moving questions along and minimizing idle chatter.
To answer the other question: 8:30 PM Eastern, 5:30 PM Pacific, do the math otherwise.
TONIGHT'S RULES
- We will continue the "message the host" format. All answers are to be private messaged to the host.
- Questions will be worth 2 points. If no one answers correctly on the first try, the second try will be worth 1 point. If there is more than one answer to a question, you will receive credit for each correct answer unless I state that all answers are required for credit.
- There will be bonuses. Bonuses are open to all players, not just those that answered correctly. Bonuses will be worth 2 points if you answered the original question correctly, 1 point if you didn't.
- There will be 50 regular questions and then a couple of special ones. Like we used to do.
- If I ask "where" without specifying, I will accept a route number or city, assuming there is a nearby city.
Congratulations to cl94 (again) who won tonight's trivia. Final scores:
