Don't bother, my wife is into that show and it's pretty bad.

None of my threads really took off (except for "What do you think are scams?" which got 18 pages before being locked). However, I think I was the one who turned "Things in middle of roundabout" into what it is now (it's only five pages, but I think I established the theme there).

This is my real signature thread:

My longest is this one, from the start of the pandemic: https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=26548.0

But my favorite is probably this one: https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=31449. I think the subject of that thread is going to be very interesting to watch in the coming decades.

Covid is essentially over at this point. If the other threads were still unlocked they probably would have died out by now.

Say that in the last COVID and see if that's a consensus opinion.

Hm. 2,000 people are still dying of it a week in the U.S. Doesn't seem like it's over.

Not saying that the disease itself is over, but the pandemic related lockdowns and restrictions are pretty much over at this point. And that's what most people were debating about.

Covid will very likely become endemic.

Also of note, I requested that the original "coronavirus" thread be unlocked several months after it was locked. Even though I had a legitimate reason, I knew it was a very low chance proposition and it was unsurprisingly denied.

Believe it or not, at the beginning of the pandemic, there were a good couple of months where it wasn't a huge political mess. And everyone was kind of uncertain and having an outlet to talk to one another about it was useful. Once everything started becoming political is when it lost the plot.

Given that I still see arguments about it in other discussion areas on the Internet, I'm not sure that's actually likely.

I also thought that it should be unlocked, but I recognize that my philosophy for when threads should be locked is different from the mods. Although we got a second chance with the vaccine thread, and since the vaccine somehow also became a political issue, that got locked as well.

Huh. Hospitalizations and deaths are higher right now than they were in summer 2021. Though, the vast majority of deaths are unvaccinated people . . .

It still surprises me that the peak of the pandemic (for cases and hospitalizations; nearly deaths as well) was actually in January 2022. Even here in Madison, one of the most liberal cities in the country, the pandemic was an afterthought at that time besides the mask mandate.

I think this week is actually the first time anyone in my family has had a legitimate Covid concern.  I believe that none of us has had to self-isolate since we got back from Mexico in March 2020 and the state health department treated us like we were radioactive just because we'd crossed an international border.  But our eldest son's best friend just tested positive yesterday, and the two of them had practically spent all week-end together–between a church lock-in Friday night through Saturday night and small group on Sunday night.  So we decided to just assume our son has the virus, even if he isn't sick.  As such, he has now transitioned from voluntary basement troll to dungeon prisoner.  Even with my wife operating a home daycare, isolation is no longer required for close contacts, but we're erring on the side of caution.  The only crappy part is that all of our home tests expired last summer.

Have you checked to see if any of the expiration dates have been extended?  Many brands of tests have received extensions of six months or more from the FDA.

It's been a while since I looked at the current guidance, but when I was a close contact last December, the guidelines at that time called for me to wear a mask when out in public.

No need.  We know so many public school teachers, that we already have someone scheduled to run us some new tests for free.

Oh, yeah, as a licensed home daycare provider, my wife definitely checks the KDHE requirements for daycares.

You might contact a pharmacy to see if you can get more. I was able to pick some up at our local pharmacy free of charge a few months back; costs were paid for by a federal program. I don't know if that program still exists, though.

Why would they have an expiration date? They aren't exactly perishable foods. Probably more of a bureaucratic requirement than anything relating to functionality.

Interestingly I've found home tests to be unreliable.  During my only confirmed instance of contracting COVID the two at home tests I did were negative (even though my wife was positive).  The results for the PCR and Molecular tests I did at Madera County the same day were positive.

Because the tests were trialed for less than a year before release to the market, the FDA had to put an expiration date of less than a year on them.  They didn't know if they would still be effective beyond that point.  It was either that, or wait longer before releasing them to the market–which would have been a course of action that, to put it lightly, wouldn't have been warmly received by the public.  This, then, explains why the FDA has extended the expiration date on many tests since their release:  as more time has elapsed, the FDA has been able to assess the tests' effectiveness over a longer period of time.

The tests include reagents that break down over time, though going off what Kyle said, it sounds they don't know exactly how long it takes them to break down enough to be ineffective. (I'm guessing you haven't actually used one of them if you're asking this–there a few little packets/bottles of chemicals inside that you have to mix, it's not like a pregnancy or drug test or whatever where it's all in a nice neat little package that you just have to expose to bodily fluid.)
